A Vice presidents role is 2nd in line to command. They are there in case the president gets killed or out of action they take over presidential duties. Think of it as an understudy to the president.

In the US what the Vice President does is mostly up to the President. The VP doesn’t have many actual constitutional responsibilities, so some VPs are more powerful/involved than others. Their only real duty is to act as President of the Senate, which allows them to cast a vote in the case of tie, which has actually come up a few times in the last several years. From a military standpoint, in a case like this where they don’t know the status of the President, the commander in chief role does not pass to the VP, instead it passes to the Secretary of Defense. If it were confirmed that the President was dead, then the VP would be sworn in as President and then take the Commander in Chief role, but in situations where the President is alive and still the President and simply unavailable, the VP’s authority is extremely limited. This was a major issue in the US on 9/11, where its very likely that the VP at that time Dick Cheney actually gave military orders to shoot down any remaining airplanes even though it was illegal for him to do so.
