Benny was the coolest Hood in the City of God. I think the dynamic between Benny and Lil Z is they really best friends and Benny had that ability to call bullshit on Lil Z. Lil Z of course didn't want him to leave and when Benny died you could say this is when Lil Z became unhinged. Hard to say if Lil Z would have killed Benny if he stayed or left. If you are talking just as a movie narrative to infuse drama then you would have the classic 2 friends square off. I still think Benny would have left and Lil Z, the psychopath he is would have let him.

Just some fun facts to add: “Knockout Ned” is the name given to the character “Mané Galinha” for the English subtitles as his original nickname would translate to Mané (Manuel) the Chicken. This was changed of course since chicken has a negative connotation for a coward, in Brasil it can refer to promiscuity, in Mané’s case I guess he’s good with women. This also adds to the chicken motif throughout the movie. Most of the actors in the film were first timers from favelas who were hired for their authenticity and the lack of Black Brasilian actors available at the time. Smaller details like the prayer before the gang war starts and the mention of never having taken a hot bath were taken from their experiences. And yes, if you rewatch the robbery scene where Ned kills the sercurity guard you do see his son, Otto, in the background.

And like others, I would also like to thank y’all for a few more non-English movie reactions as of late :) . They are some of my favorites from yours as my introduction to the channel was from the Oldboy and Pan’s Labyrinth reactions. I understand they don’t get the same level of audience as Shrek or The Wolf of Wall Street, not to dismiss those movies of course as I’m just as much a fan of those. But I think they’re a great addition to your back catalogue and I implore more viewers and people in general to progress past the hurdle of subtitles.
