A general explination of the canon is to follow. I'll make it with several "!!!'s". Michael Myers was created by John Carpenter and Debra Hill for this film. The character was intentionally designed to be enigmatic and terrifying. Other's have already mentioned that the mask is just a Captain Kirk (William Shatner) mask painted white. As for the explanation for his murderous tendencies, there really isn't any in this film or in the original lore. At the end of this film, as far as anyone knows or could say, Michael stalked and killed Laurie's friends and tried to kill her because she happened to walk onto his porch. This is one of the many pieces of the original lore that gets retconned multiple times before we get to the recent trilogy. In the script as well as the credits, Michael was listed and referred to as "The Shape." He is portrayed as a relentless, 'almost supernatural' force. !!!!!!!!!CANON!!!!!!!!! As for the watch order and how that giant rats-nest gets pulled out: Originally, this was not planned for a sequel. After its success the made a second also staring Jamie Lee that picks up immediately after the events of the first one. Some new lore is introduced here but I can't share it because of spoilers. Halloween III: Season of the Witch has NOTHING to do with Michael or Laurie and was an attempt to pivot the film series into an anthology of spooky stories. This failed. It's not a good film. I wouldn't bother watching it. After the failure of SOW, they returned to Michael but Jamie Lee declined to return. They moved on to other peripherally connected characters through the first retcon of the series, the reception of which is divisive to say the least. In my opinion, they were worth watching but aren't good films and, given what has happened since, their value is pretty much zero. This includes Hallowing 4: The Return of Michael Myers, 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and 6: The Curse of Michael Myers. There's a lot more to say about these but that gets into spoiler territory. In my opinion, then next film after the Part Two worth watching is the 7th film: Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. This essentially retcons the previous three films (ignoring SOW) and sees the return of Jamie Lee as Laurie Strode. To be clear, this isn't a great film, but it is the first "modern" halloween/Michael Myers movie and it's not awful. It boasts a pretty decent cast of 90's teen heartthrobs and personally I thought it did a pretty good job bringing Michael back in a way that made sense and did the original justice. After this is the cash-grabbiest of all the Halloween cash-grabs, Halloween Resurrection featuring Jamie Lee again but staring a young cast along with a few marquee names such as Busta Rhymes and Tyra Banks. It's not a great film, but is canon up to this point and is one of those that are bad in just the right ways to be fun, imo. After this we got Rob Zombie stepping up to the plate to reimagine the character of Michael Myers. These two films are true remakes. They have no connection to the previous or following films. They are DEFINITELY worth a watch in my opinion, but be warned, Rob pulls no punches (the second one was a little strange). Then to the Halloween 2018 trilogy. With Jamie Lee as its driving force, the filmmakers wipe the franchise of any previous sequel and treat the world as though all the events after the original never happened at all. The general consensus is that the first and second of this trilogy are really good. The third one, Halloween Ends, is a bit more of a hot button topic for debate. I personally wasn't happy with the wrap up but I guess it's worth a watch. Personally, as subpar of a film as it was, I prefer the wrap up given by Halloween H20 for the overall lore. Hope this was helpful.

The ones who think it's dated probably didn't watch it, like me. I'm a huge horror fan and I'll totally dig into old, obscure, slow, cringy stuff, but for some reason this one always sends me to sleep.
