As others have mentioned, the end of the film is a departure from the way King originally wrote it. It's a fairly hopeful ending in the story, but while King sometimes (famously) hates some of the changes people make in his adaptations (see: Kubrick, Stanley), he LOVED Darabont's ending and was mad at himself for not thinking of it in the first place.

This movie just made me more mad then happy I watched it, the same way it did for Simone and George. I really don't know why it got so many votes.

Frank Darabont was also the executive producer and was involved with the first two seasons of the Walking Dead

I adore this movie. Everything about it. The "50s Creature Feature" aesthetic. The Rod Serling-esque characters. A cast of great character actors. The gut punch at the end. EVERYTHING.

I love this movie so much precisely because its so dark and so tragic. The poster in the opening sequence is nod to Stephen King's Dark Tower series, which is a Western/Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy series, that links pretty much of all of King's work into one giant multi-verse. I think George in particular would really enjoy it.

this is basically an old school Twilight Zone episode on steroids. Great flick.
