I only watched this for the first time 1-2 weeks ago. Only the 80s could've produced a mix of teen comedy and cold war movie. And the weirdest thing is that it kind of works.

The cradle like thing he set the phone receiver into at about 8:38 is an original style modem (an acoustic coupler). You would be lucky to get maybe 150 bits per second with it.

Steve Arnold

The guy who wrote this also wrote the screenplay for „Sneakers“, a movie, which I think, the two of you would love. And I would love to watch you see it.

Pepijn Schmitz

I didn't even know that was the same screenwriter. But that makes perfect sense!

Back in the day analog /landline phones relied on audio tones. With old phone system you could play an audio recording of the tones into the mic to dial phone numbers. So, technically that security door with the tones trick could work. I used to play with the phone system in the mid late nineties and figured this out. You could also click the hang up button in numbered sequences to dial. 7 quick clicks for 7 and so on. Analog audio system.

In the film Red Dragon (another one that should be on their list), Hannibal Lecter uses the "click the button" technique.
