This should have been on a comedy poll. 🤪😁

Basic Instinct is Cinecringe material. Hey, throwback suggestion for a truly great suspense film, Hitchcock's classic, "Rear Window"(1954). It would help you forget Basic Instinct!

I did have to take a polygraph years ago, administered by a PI, not the cops. Ig\t seemed to work in that it correctly determined I did not take the money that disappeared at work. But I hear if you practice, you can beat it.

Matt O'Keefe

Haven't watched this since the 90's.

Maarten Martens

George is often on the woman's body, but in this case that would not have made is less weird LOL.

Carla Davis

Lie detectors can be admissible of both parties agree but they are used as a tool by the police to help determine if they are on the right track. Yes they can be fooled. Certain gov organizations teach how to beat it. However most people cannot beat the machine. I took one and just for fun tried to beat it. I couldn't. Most people can't. They are still widely use in the USA by law enforcement and by some companies as a pre-employment screening. Most law enforcement departments require you to pass a lie detector to get hired. And for all the people saying that this movie was bad, it was a huge hit when it came out. IT was the first of its time. Very risqué for the time. Showing a bisexual relationship on film was new. This movie put Sharon stone on the map. Michael Douglas was in a lot of suspense movies back then. This, fatal attraction, A Perfect Murder, Disclosure, and Don't Say A Word. Suspense movies were huge back in the 80s and 90s. It's when people's attention span was longer than 15mins. 😆 Today if there are no explosions in the first 15 mins they call it slow. We actually liked to think back in the day. 😆 AND Catherine did it! Beth was completely innocent. Catherine set her up and she knew Nick would shoot her. Nick is a shooter remember. Catherine has a genius level iq. And when she gets tired of Nick she will kill him too.

insane film, neo noir in all its glory. also remember, its from the same guy as Robocop and Total recall, so yeah, its kinda violent :P

I agree with you about how big this was at the time...and I remember loving it when I saw it in the theaters when released...I don't think it holds up well over time...but that isn't unusual...it is a good example of a popular thriller from that era

Rob Church

Nah Lie detectors are complete junk science. It has nothing to do with someone trying to beat it, much more the fact that it can easily give false pos/neg results , especially when dealing with everything from anxiety to neuro divergence to actual psychopaths. It's less accurate than flipping a coin, in those scenarios and should be banned outright as anything more than a novelty for friends at a party. It's a ouija board.

Young Blood Priest

Great job on the thumbnail, George. Also,George lama shoe…👍🏿😂

Carla Davis

No it's not 100%, certain meds, mental conditions etc will affect the results. Before taking the lie detector you are screened for these things. Also you can give a false positive if you feel guilty about something even if you are not responsible. This is common among victims of sexual abuse. Again you are pre-screened for this stuff. As far as junk science, i disagree. It would say it's no more junk science than any other science. Nothing is 100% especially when you're dealing with human beings. If you have 2 people with the same illness, given the same meds but 1 dies, does that mean the treatment was junk science? No, it is not 100%, again nothing is. But more often than not lie detectors are accurate. The average healthy untrained person would fail a lie detector test if they were not telling the truth and its widely used by law enforcement and its considered a useful tool. Body language is another but let's not go down that road. 😆

Rob Church

I'm sorry, it is absolutely junk science, whether you agree or disagree doesn't matter, it's a fact. Also "I would say it's no more junk science than any other science" is actually hilarious, so good on you for making me laugh. Seriously though, you all really need to read up on the subject before you start paragraphing about things you don't understand. Lawyers have estimated within 20 years from now any use of a polygraph in a conviction will be grounds for the case being thrown out and lawsuits are expected. It's literally like using a Dowsing rod to find water.

Carla Davis

Ok my friend, we can agree to disagree. And I have read up on lie detector and have participated is a few classes. I have a little more experience with lie detectors than the average person I would say, but we dont have to think the same. Have a great day.

Rob, is it possible that you have missed our hosts' recent comments about civility? (Yes, I know, https://xkcd.com/386/ )

Kangdarius

This flick gets the recognition but imo when it comes to this type of Michael Douglas flick “disclosure” or “fatal attraction” is way better.

jmundt33a

Fatal Attraction got the accolades. Disclosure is just as befuddling as this one.

HeyHeyJK

That may be the greatest - and most disturbing - thumbnail of all time.

Rob Church

Nope, read the whole post, and I don't see anything I said that was "Uncivil", I'm not calling names or bullying someone or dissing their taste in movies, but at the same time this is a serious topic George asked about and the comments here are littered with dangerous misinformation, along with straight up lies.

When You Two Are This Invested In A Film It Has Proven Itself 5 Star Great...

React to Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 "Rear Window" pretty please... A tale told through one Rear Window...
