Boyan Konov

This is on my top 10 greatest movies of all time list so excited for you to watch this!

Zero Cochrane

This movie was my introduction to anime way back in the video rental days. Anime of the time was so good.

Plink plonk plink-plonk...

I would strongly recommend to watch Princess Mononoke and Grave of the Fireflies and Ghost in the Shell( 1995).

Gath Bard

I hope this survives because Ghost in the Shell is my favorite anime movie

Arifur R

I need this to survive because there's so many unique animated films from Japan that you guys need to check out.

the movie is very much in-media-res, while also changing some things between the manga and the film. hopefully this won't be blocked by the jealous IP deities.

Akira is a visual masterpiece but I always thought it was such a weak movie story wise. That’s why I think it should nvr be made into live action unless the effects are James Cameron level. If I may suggest an anime movie though. instead of the usual suspects (princess mononoke/ghost in a shell). Try a movie called sword of the stranger. Amazing film with a lot of heart and some of the best animated action you’ll ever see

Well the movie's budget extension was cut during production. So they had to rush the ending. The manga is way, way longer, with a LOT of time spent in a post-apocalypse Neo-Tokyo.

Kangdarius

Ahh I see. Well they still made a classic with wat they could do.

Princess Mononoke: Yes. Ghost in the Shell: Definitely. Grave of the Fireflies: No. I mean yes but... IDK recommending that movie to the unsuspecting just seems mean.

Wrencher86

This is a pleasant surprise. Hopefully this doesn't cause any problems for you re: copyright strikes. Everyone else has recommended the usual suspects (Mononoke, GitS), and those are very good. One that might not get mentioned much is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. It's got some of the usual anime tropes (casual disregard for physics, unnecessarily sexualized female character designs) but it's a genuinely good movie. Good blend of light horror and action. The score goes way harder than it needs to, also.

Byron

Spirited Away is another solid crossover intro.

I'm adding another recommendation for Ghost In The Shell. I also want to plug the first season of Altered Carbon. Kind of a True Detective-type situation, where only one season is worth watching. But it's probably the best modern live-action Cyberpunk since BR 2049.

overdev

oh yes the first season of Altered Carbon was really great :)

When I was a kid, I wished speed lines were real. I still with they were real.

Yeah, this movie and Ghost in the Shell effectively single handedly blew the door for Japanese animation to reach the mainstream in the west, both are utter masterclass, though I honestly preser Ghost, I love akira but the manga is literally 6 massive like 400 page epics, having read them this film is unquestionably amazing but it's very all over the place thematically, reason being otomo made this before he was even done the manga, so you have say the first three maybe volumes in pretty hood detail and then the other three compressed or just straight skipped...huge details about the political system in Japan, the religious situation, all gets side swiped because it either just hadn't been created yet or was just bulky and expository for a film. Ghost on the other hand it does leave things out but the story is tight, compact, the world building brilliant (particularly for its time in the early-mid cyberpunk movement) and it has as much awe factor without nearly as many moments of "wait, what's happening right now?", definitely the next one to do

Andrew Hussey

Consequently, just as a second option, watch "Your Name." as well, unsure if you've seen it but one of the few animes that nearly brought me to tears, I particularly think Simone would be moved by it, that particularl director is a name I've kept my eye on both that, weathering with you and (from the looks of the numbers though it's not out in Canada yet) Suzume are all top tier stories

JH

This and Blade Runner were extremely ahead of their times in pure scene aesthetics and special effects; whether it be this entire movie or Blade Runner’s overhead shots of the cityscapes—— both films are so intricate and sophisticated in pure set design and F/X, that it’s a wonder how they are both 80s films.

Hyperdryve

Nah, people always seem surprised by the abilities of past decades but in reality it was just that most others didn’t put as much time, money and effort in not that we weren’t capable of it.

Opti_Frog

Not really the kind of anime i enjoy, but it's impossible to deny the influence of Akira.
