If you guys liked this, please give "Rush" with Chris Hemsworth a go. A fantastic racing film.

A hint that Matt Damon was a longtime Carroll Shelby fan, might be that Will Hunting was wearing a Shelby Cobra jacket back in 1997. Even if they took a few liberties with some facts, the overall story was so rich with dramatic elements, they didn't need to embellish much. I first saw this film alone during the pandemic. It was much more enjoyable watching along with you. Thanks for choosing this.

Another vote to please watch Rush, it's incredible.

This is a bit of a personal movie for me as the cousin of my grandfather is the greatest Le Mans drivers of all time, Jacky Ickx. He actually made his debut in this race in a Ford but his car didn't finish the race because of engine trouble. The part where the door didn't close on the start actually happened, the Le Mans style start where you run to your car was extremely dangerous as doors weren't closed properly, seat belts weren't put on, just to not lose time. In 1969 my relative as a form of protest refused to run, so he walked to his car, put on his seat belts and went on to win. Here you can see the youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g63iM83Nwdc So the start was banned after that as in the first lap of the 1969 race John Woolfe died as a direct result of this type of start. The fun thing in endurance racing is that you have 3 drivers of different skill levels, based on you ranking you get a license, so you have one Platinum/Gold driver, a silver driver and a bronze driver. The bronze driver is often the rich dude funding the team, or just someone who races cars as a hobby. I once raced the 24h of Spa Francorchamps as a bronze and it was absolutely thrilling, these days the cars are built so well it's not as hard when it comes to wear and tear. But in those days, reliability was a far bigger concern than raw speed. It's why the actions of Leo Beebe are portrayed a bit harshly even though it was a valid race strategy. These races are for PR purposes even to this day, these companies don't care who wins, as long as it sells cars.

Yes, everyone who said about "RUSH" is right. Also it's directed by the Apollo 13 director Ron Howard.

I loved playing with matchbox cars, as a kid. First time I went to Disneyland, I didn't care about the Matterhorn or Space Mountain--all I wanted to do was go on the driving ride-where you got to drive these little cars around a track. Then I found out that the track was guided and you only had like 2" of give either side. Bitterly disappointed! Simone is right--driving is so much fun-esp manuals.

I LOVE this film! It feels like this film is more of a tribute to the late Ken Miles, than it is about the story of Ford building a car to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Speaking of Ken Miles, if you'd like to know more about him and that famous finish at Le Mans, you should check out "8 Meters: Triumph, Tragedy and a Photo Finish at Le Mans". The 20 minute video can be found on YouTube at the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhiWRTDZ7-E

The Worlds Fastest Indian is a story like this, a man and his machine!

Simone, since you love the old Ford Mustangs, you might be interested in the 1968 movie Bullitt. The chase scene with a -68 Mustang is still often ranked as the best and most realistic chase scene of all time. It's probably too old school, though, to make for a popular reaction -- especially because apart from that one lengthy scene, the movie isn't that spectacular. But if you wanna see actual footage of cool vintage cars going at it, look no further.

Since you guys liked this movie so much you should check out Rush (2013). It’s another great racing movie but this time it’s formula 1 and it’s about a rivalry between drivers.

I wish I'd seen this comment sooner. Simone also asked once or wondered what was the best(?) car chase on film. I suggested Bullitt, obviously. Coupled with this and the tie-in with Zodiac maybe bumps it up a bit? Then we just have to work on sneaking in The French Connection. Hmm.

Or just watch Le Mans (1971) cuz Steve McQueen. Who was also in Bullitt. Did I mention you should watch Bullitt? Yeah. You should probably just go ahead and watch that.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, but I did not know the twist at the end. It was shocking. What a movie!
