A note about del Toro’s character: He’s not Colombian himself. The cop calls him “Medellín” for what he represents - his alignment in this whole mess. He was, as he said, a prosecutor in Juarez, which is what made the cartels murder his family. Now, he’s a mercenary and, yes, vengeful spirit. He’s in it to avenge his family, but killing Mexican cartel bosses just so happens to align with Brolin’s (i.e. the CIA’s) plan. They retain del Toro’s services, so to speak, because weakening the Mexican cartels, which the US can’t control, will give control back to the “more manageable” Colombian cartels. At least that’s the plan (and the CIA’s plans never cause blowback, right?). Uncertain if the CIA really had much sway with the old Colombian cartels or whether they’d have that now; the cynical reading is that at least Colombia is simply farther away, and so won’t cause as many dead bodies to show up in walls in Arizona. Out of sight, out of mind. And causing havoc in South America is indeed something the CIA is historically much more comfortable with. And yes, it’s all illegal. CIA operating on US soil is illegal, infiltrating an assassin into Mexico is illegal, having him murder a family is at least a misdemeanor, etc. etc.. But as you correctly sussed out, that is really why Blunt was there: to rubber-stamp the whole thing. Anyway, there is of course a Sicario 2. Del Toro is back, but it’s not Denis Villeneuve. I don’t remember it being bad, but it did seem to fall into the usual sequel thing of “dude, bro, those action scenes in Sicario were siiick, so let’s do more of that” to some extent. Still, would suggest you watch it

David Nesbit

Now you need to watch the sequel. Sicario: Day of the Soldado , same Main cast except no Emily Blunt.
