Ian Hunt

I will say if you do end up watching Kingdom of Heaven, might be worth going for the Director’s cut of that one

Joe Williams

Some great choices here. The cinematography in The Revenant is 😍.

Jimmie V

I'd recommend throwing Picnic at Hanging Rock on this list. It's one of Peter Weir's earlier films considered to be an art-house masterpiece by many.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Man, The Revenant for the “wildlife encounter” and cinematography alone but Kingdom of Heaven and The Last Emperor are terrific as well. All really solid choices that are deserving to be seen regardless 😊

Andrew Helmer

Totally off topic … any update on George ? How’s he feeling ? How’s recovery ?

BigGuy209

My vote is for All Quiet on the Western Front & Dunkirk. good choice

The Gunslinger

You should check out Rango.

Neil J

If Kingdom of Heaven wins it’s a must that you watch the director’s cut. It was butchered in the theatrical version.

IR4TE

Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid is just an awesome classic

Harry Fieldson

I recommended it a long while ago now but The King on netflix is great, Timothee Chalamet, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris and Robert Pattinson doing Shakespeare's Henry V story - with a gorgeous soundtrack to boot

Lars G

It’s absolutely necessary. The Director’s cut is an incredible movie, the theatrical version is pretty mediocre. It’s plausibly one of the most dramatic improvements by a directors cut ever.

djKENTO

Kingdom of Heaven has to be the director's cut. It's a totally different movie, a vastly improved movie. But I don't think it's gonna win. Maybe when we're closer to Gladiator 2 and you want some of that Ridley Scott analytics bump.

Andrew Helmer

That’s Great!!! No one cares about the schedule , health first . Thanks !

Mikael Roldan

Everyone should watch the DC version of Kingdom of Heaven. It's incredible.

Ph4ZeD

Some great films there, The Revenant is stunning

G P

Too bad Barry Lyndon didn't make the poll, quite easily the best period piece ever. If Kingdom of Heaven wins it should be the Director's Cut otherwise it doesn't make as much sense.

Eric Brown

100% accurate - the director's cut is a much better version of the movie. This is also a pretty universal opinion if someone has seen both

Jeff K

100%. And then hopefully that would get them to The Sting, which is on my short list of favorite movies ever made.

Paul Davey

You're doing period pieces and didn't include "Carrie"!?

djKENTO

Yeah it's pretty rad actually because young editors can watch the two cuts and learn why one works and one doesn't and with the commentaries really dig in.

Fathervon

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (Director's cut) ✋🏻🙂‍↕️

djKENTO

Rango fucking rules. It's my 2nd favorite Gore Verbinski movie. It's been way too long since he made a movie and the world needs his weirdness back on the big screen.

jmundt33a

Leo and a bear. Okay.

djKENTO

Would be a smart time to start them with Bad Boys 4 hitting VOD in late August. Analytics would pick up.

David Lengyel

Expected to see Atonement in the poll. Beter luck next time. The Revenant gets my vote here.

Michael

I have to say this is probably one of toughest polls you've done recently for me to choose from I mean they are all amazing films kingdom of heaven is by far my favourite and the revenant and Dunkirk are beautifully shot movies

JayF

Dunkirk is a fantastic film and deserves to win but it would be nice to do a poll of just older movies like Butch Cassidy, The Sting, The Great Escape, The Maltese Falcon, and such. Newer movies are almost always going to win a poll they are in with older movies.

djKENTO

The King is GREAT. if they start doing cool interpretations of Shakespeare I'd love for a reaction to The Tragedy of Macbeth with Denzel and Joel Coen and Richard III with Ian McKellan and RDJ where it's all reinterpreted as pre-WWII England. Very stylish.

djKENTO

living bad ass legend right there! Keep kicking ass George.

djKENTO

any excuse to pop out the 4K Blu-ray for AQOTWF is a good one.

streetduck

I would recommend The Elephant Man (1980) for next period piece poll

djKENTO

movie has a built in intermission and every physical release is on 2 discs so there's a way to work it in.

djKENTO

I would LOVE to see some Joe Wright films like Atonement get reactions. Atonement, Hanna, Darkest Hour. Oh I just realized they're going to react to his Black Mirror episode Nosedive this week! That's dope! hope they like it.

Gavin Kinsey

Yes, if you do do Kingdom of Heaven please try to make it the DC. The theatrical release cut out so much of the story it makes almost no sense.

Maddie

Would love for you guys to watch The Piano 1993

djKENTO

really hoping for a string of Lynch... would love Twin Peaks too... won't hold my breath for that miracle tho.

JayF

Just to hype "The Sting" because I've yet to see it on a poll here, rated 8.4 on IMDB, won 7 Oscars including best picture. So it's an even more highly rated and more awarded Robert Redford and Paul Newman movie than Butch Cassidy (8.0 and 4 Oscars).

Bill Woods

I don't know if it counts as a "period piece", but consider The Death of Stalin (2017)

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

I saw the directors cut a long time later after seeing it in theatres. Really shows how intervention can sometimes deprive us of wonderful directors’ visions all over the industry

Nathan Swapp

Remember that you need to do the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. Also, while I love it, it's not historically accurate so don't treat it like a history lesson.

djKENTO

sure it is. Takes place in the 50s. Total period piece. It's a dark comedy sure, but still period piece.

RipTheRipper

Requests: - Jason and the Argonauts (1963) - Young Woman and the Sea (2024) - Where the Crawdads Sing (2022) - Like Crazy (2011) - Garden State (2004) - Never Rarely Sometimes Always (2020)

TA Slay

So I'm guessing it wasn't Dr Nick Riviera then, although you could have had it done for only $129.95!!

Christopher Feiertag

A bit more love for „All quiet on the western front“ would be preferable. Nice selection, though.

Zhivko Yakimov

One more vote for the Director's Cut, if you ever come down to watching this. While it doesn't add much to the main story, it develops the characters a lot, and it is a pity that those scenes were cut from the theatrical release. I also agree that this is one of the biggest improvements between a theatrical release and a directors' cut (a lot more than Lord of the Rings, for example).

miniature

I mean he lives in Canada soo... 129.95 would be overpaying lmao.

Dirge Girl

Carrie (1976)

Andrew Helmer

I think we need to focus on the positive , he’s back . Someone has to annoy Simone with Dad jokes . He’s not the hero wanted , but the hero we needed

Simone's Coconut Squire

I’m a fan of The Last Emperor but I remember that being a LONG movie. I don’t think enough people saw All Quiet.

squarebrain

Apocalypto (2006)

Florian Geyer

I reccomend "Seven years in Tibet", love this movie

Maiki

It's just a perfect movie. Would love to see it here one day.

Shibby

I agree, the Directors Cut is a far superior movie.

Jacob King

Voted for Butch Cassidy because it’s fun but none of these choices were in my particular wheelhouse. I will cop to never having seen the directors cut of Kingdom of Heaven but it must be doing some pretty heavy lifting based on the theatrical. Some recent period films I’ve enjoyed were Emma (2020), Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019), No Sudden Move (2021) and Asteroid City (2023).

lovemoose

I was wondering if you guys are gonna get to A Quiet Place part 2?

RandomNevermind

Two movies that I can name "period pieces" which I would like to recommend: War and Peace 1965 The Painted Veil 2006

Tomas Gaspar

If you do Kingdom of Heaven than plse watch the Director's Cut.

Dakota

Sci-fi movie I recommend is Looper

BlakeK80DrumCovers

All quiet on the western front is a brilliant movie. It shows the innocence of a lot of the young men during WW1... Utterly tragic.

Paul G

In true Ridley Scott fashion he has actually disavowed the theatrical cut and considers the Director's Cut to be the only true version of the film.

QuigonJim25

'Road to Perdition'

Deco

Older poll would be great, like best of 60s,70s

Jay Davis

Soooo.... after being annoying about it for about a year now. Wonder if I'll vote Dunkirk... Yes I will!

Jay Davis

As much as I shilled for (and am voting for Dunkirk) Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut is such a damn damn good film.

Tay Schumaker

As others have said, if you watch Kingdom of Heaven you have to watch the directors cut. It’s not just some fun bonus cut, it’s a far superior film to the theatrical version

Simon Pegged Me

Paths of Glory (1957) would have been a perfect accompaniment to the films on this list.

FWPJR.

I’m gonna request them again, and they are both “period pieces”. Please watch and react to Young Guns 1 and Young Guns 2, they are both good and fun to watch and are full of action and have good stories ( imo ) plus I just love anything Billy the Kid. I know George has talked about playing Red Dead Redemption ( I think Simone also talked about it ) well if he likes playing a game like that then I know he’d enjoy both of these movies.

E. D.

I‘ve seen none of them 🙈 only a few scenes of ben-hur here and there while zapping.. I planed to watch all q. on t western front, the revenant and dunkirk for a while but somehow never watched them.. ok not quite true I‘ve seen kingdom of heaven in the movie theatre

E. D.

I think I‘ll watch that in the next days (maybe tonight^^), wanted to watch it for years, don‘t know what it‘s about, ppl seem to like that movie, i wanna know why

My name is Jeff

Butch and Kid IS really really good movie, and If you like old movies you should check that one out. Its a classic

QuigonJim25

Oh, dude. Its a proper film. Fantastic acting, beautiful music and some great cinematography.

beefjerkywizard

Just saying the Count of Monte Cristo could've been on this poll too (if it couldn't best out Escape from NY no way it would've beaten Dunkirk)

beefjerkywizard

I like these choices. A lot of them would be first times for me which is always fun to experience with you two

E. D.

maybe it‘s not available (for free) yet cuz it just came out? but maybe I‘m wrong

King_Panarisi

Add Cool Runnings (1993) to a sports poll if you do one again please.

E. D.

The only thing I remember is a blond Brad Pitt and a tibetan kid

E. D.

Supporting this from NRW, I‘ve only seen the beginning of the movie and it seems very well done, visually etc

E. D.

yeah who doesn‘t like harvey keitel‘s naked cheeks lmao overall great movie 👌

Tomas Gaspar

A lotnof dialogue and longe scenes showing what happens. Best to see when the main character reaches Ibelin and it is totally desolate and in the next moment it green and verdant. The DC Version shows the time passing after they built a watering system and so on...just one example.

QuigonJim25

Also, 'Shanghai Noon' for a laugh with Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson.

Florian Geyer

Yeah, kind of. I dont want to spoil something in case it really happens sometime 😅. But its a lovley and spiritual journey, in my opinion

Mr. Writhms

How about a silent movie poll? Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd movies are a fun watch. Lloyd in “Speedy” (1928) is particularly awesome. Watch the guys doing their own stunts way before Jackie Chan and Tom Cruise. Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" (1976) is a hilarious spoof of the era.

E. D.

Anyone also a bit pissed or annoyed that the new Bevery Hills Cop came out this year? I mean, wtf have they done in the last three decades? The same with the new Ghost Busters movie 🤦🏻‍♂️ I thought the same when Terminator 3 came out: not only did they wait 12 years, it was a bad movie or mediocre if I‘m very charitable

David Lonewolf Wright

Awwww, I was hoping RRR was going to be on this list. Fingers crossed that Butch and Sundance make the podium.

fmcmullan

I'll echo what others have said...this list should have included: Barry Lyndon (best period piece *ever* and best cinematography *ever*) The Sting (just an all around fun movie to watch) Paths of Glory (one of the best anti-war films ever made)

E. D.

I like old movies, have seen a bunch but there is still a ton of them I need to watch. I can‘t believe I never watched The Graduate besides a few scenes in film school. I think that movie is very enjoyable to watch and has a few cool transitions from one scene to another.. an old movie I enjoyed quite a bit was Harold and Maude, I suggested it a while ago but hasn‘t been on a poll yet

FranciscoGios

If Kingdom of Heaven had a good 3rd Act this movie would be next to Gladiator and way better than 300, but the creators did not know what to do with our Knight hero.

Ph4ZeD

I really hope both Dunkirk & The Revenant get watched

Arnie Cox

All winners, but the cinematography in Ben Hur also offers context for most or all of the others. Same for the 1930 All Quiet...

Jpsynergy

Excited for the top two picks right now. I voted for Revenant but the Kingdom of Heaven directors cut is such an incredible film.

Philipp Noller

The last emperor is such a underrated movie

FWPJR.

You’ll love it, one of Tom Hanks best performances imo

Trolez

I haven't watched the theatrical cut of Kingdom of Heaven myself, but from all I've heard, the director's cut is vastly superior. A review said that it's 45 minutes longer but feels 45 minutes shorter.

Haye Zeus

Ben Hur? I barely know her. Actually I consider it the best old hollywood epic. Definitely a favorite to watch on Easter.

olly.enn

Yep, aaabsolutely! It's not gonna win anyway but yes, the DC is most.def the better movie!

lovemoose

Oh I mean the movie that came out in 2020. But I do hope they also watch Day One :)

REDR58

More Lynch is more better! And Twin Peaks should definitely be on a future watchlist.

Hernani

Can't wait for the Revenant

TechPriest

That is definitely a strong period piece - great book and a solid movie adaptation.

Tom M

Atonement is so darn romantic and started my Keira Knightly crush and James McAvoy mancrush.

Gee

Empire of the Sun and The Longest Day (insane cast for it's time) would be good ones to watch also

Johnny

Dunkirk was mid, at best.

S Fav

The three I have seen being the lowest ones haha

PureGonzo

SO MANY AMAZING FILMS lol I can’t even begin to decide 😭

Mycenaeus .

I would recommend Spartacus (1960) by Stanley Kubrick for a Roman themed period piece. Maybe The Name of the Rose (1986) for something medieval, and Bonnie and Clyde (1967) for 1930s America. For war movies, you shouldn't miss Tora Tora Tora (1970), and the 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front is preferable to the new one.

Jesse

If/when you eventually watch Kingdom of Heaven, please be sure that it's the director's cut, it's almost a different movie to the theatrical cut.

Dioskur

Dunkirk and Revenant in the lead? Thats a joke, right? If they didn't see Ben-Hur yet, this is a must watch! it is one of the central pillars of movie history! It doesnt even matter if its good, its just... fundamental.

REDR58

Another excellent Peter Weir film to add to a future watch list is "Witness" from 1985 with Harrison Ford.

Jasper Collins

All Quiet on the Western Front has a great black and white version that is a little closer to the book. I'd recommend that one over the new version but maybe not that many people know it.

REDR58

Jason and the Argonauts AND Clash of the Titans (1981)!

REDR58

We just passed the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings which would have been a perfect time to watch The Longest Day but ah, well. And Empire of the Sun, the semi-forgotten Spielberg epic everyone should see is incredible.

REDR58

But which version of Tora! Tora! Tora!? The American version or the roughly 10-minute longer Japanese version???

Jordan Barnes

I’ve been wanting to enjoy Kingdom of Heaven with George for soooo loooooong.

IR4TE

Robert Redford and Paul Newman together just had an awesome chemistry on screen.

Kinokind

But it IS good! Possibly great, as a filmic accomplishment. Yep, essentials are Ben Hur and Spartacus.

sarCC

Hmmm...as far as period pieces go, my favorites are The Handmaiden, Love & Friendship, For A Few Dollars More, The Sting, and, more recently, Eileen and Are You There God It's Me Margaret.

sarCC

Emma. and Portrait of a Lady on Fire are both spectacular picks.

Bruce Liddle

I would say for period pieces, you can't go wrong with Michael Mann's Last of the Mohicans. Quite simply a perfect piece of film making.

Tim T—

All versions of "All Quiet of the Western Front" are good, although I prefer the 1930 and 2022 versions. For a war-esque period piece poll you’re missing Das Boot (1981, 1997) again!

Tim T—

(A little bit sad that George already has seen The Last Emperor, although very understandable. Sad, that it doesn’t do well in the poll.)

REDR58

Some period and period piece-adjacent movies to consider for a future poll. I know I have mentioned some in the past, but, eh. Here they are again. American Graffiti (1973) Set in 1962 following a group of teen-aged friends (and some of the actors were actually teenagers!), it's got a lot of great music and is deeper than it might appear from the surface. I'd argue this is George Lucas' best movie. Director Ron Howard has a main starring role. Citzen Kane (1941). Directed by and starring then 25 year-old Orson Welles. This nonlinear story told in flashbacks and the then present time (roughly 1871 and 1941) simply should be seen by everyone. It is still remarkably relevant today. Dances with Wolves Extended version (1990) This movie starring and directed by Kevin Costner seems to get some weird hate, primarily that it is a "white savior" trope on film, but if you watch the movie, particularly the extended version which fleshes out a lot of the relationships in the story, I think one can argue that it is nothing like a white savior story. Escape from Alcatraz (1979) Set in the 1960s, this is a solid crime drama. Gandhi (1982) is an epic story starring Ben Kingsley (you may not be aware, but he has Indian heritage and was born "Krishna Pandit Bhanji") with Richard Attenborough (John Hammond from Jurassic Park) directing. The Great Gatsby (2013) More Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Debicki who you saw in "Tenet." Heavenly Creatures (1994) Directed by Peter Jackson, set in the 1950s and starring Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet in their film debuts. Hidden Figures (2016) Way more than competent people doing much more than competent things, it is based on the lives of some of the black female "computers" who were essential in getting the US to be a real competitor in the space race with the Soivet Union. Lincoln (2012) Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, set in the latter days of the US Civil War. Malcolm X (1992) Denzel Washington who has a remarkable likeness to the real Malcolm X, plays the title character and the movie is set between 1925 and 1965. The Reader (2008) Yet another Kate Winslet movie, set in postwar Germany. Can't say much more. Books are involved. The Remains of the Day (1993) more of romance, but still, it's set from the 1920s to 1956. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. Saturday Night Fever Director's Cut (1977) I watched this for the first time a few years ago and had always had the impression that it was just a silly movie about dancing. No it is not. Sense and Sensibility (1995) with Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman (Die Hard) and Hugh Grant and also Kate Winslet again! Set in the 1800s. The Warriors Director's Cut (1979) Just a nutty film, set in a sort of dystopian 1970s New York about street gangs hunting another, smaller gang down. Well worth a watch.

james repka

For my money, the best of the best of WWII movies are Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers, both directed by Clint Eastwood back-to-back, and telling the story of the battle from the perspectives of American soldiers (FoOF) and Japanese soldiers (LfIJ).

Logan Kerlee

Went ahead and called my on this poll. He suggested that I choose Kingdom of Heaven. I've never seen that movie before, so I'm just going off my dad's selection. I trust his taste, though! :) While it looks CLEAR that Dunkirk will win I'm not upset at all - that's a good one. :)

MPH

Yes! Dunkirk is my second favorite movie after Almost Famous. I think it's Nolan's masterpiece and the best war movie ever. Good job Patrons! The other movies are fine, but Dunkirk is actual art for thinkers.

MPH

Dunkirk is a masterpiece and the best war movie ever. You said it yourself. Ben-Hur is not good.

Khan1001

Dunkirk & Revenant, both great, nice easy poll for once, also, George & Simone, are you going to do House of the Dragon S2?

Gary Trousdale

I’m in the minority here…I didn’t like Dunkirk at all. Kingdom of Heaven and The Revenant get my vote.

Michael Buhl

The Sting (1973) and Miller's Crossing (1990) would be good additions to this poll.

Jesse

The director's cut is better than both of those.

QuigonJim25

If you do watch it I'd love to know what you think of it! No spoilers of course.

Fernando Alamán

I don't understand why "The Name Of The Rose" isn't much popular in the USA. Amazing movie, hope one day they react to it.

jackthegent

if you do kingdom of heaven the directors cut is much better

beefjerkywizard

The book is one of my favourites and same with the movie. I just enjoy them separately from eachother lol

Victor Fiegel

Dunkirk voters, give your votes to The Revenant! 😅

REDR58

That’s why I’m hoping one of the other movies wins first, even though I would like to watch The Last Emperor for the first time here. I just find the reactions of Simone and George are simply more interesting when they both haven’t seen the movie.

CD

As it should be…IMHO. I was going to double-vote, but then decided a single for The Revenant would suffice. Was pleased to see it, and Dunkirk…where my other vote would have gone…2nd and 1st. FTR…The Last Emperor, is a beautiful film (Bernardo Bertolucci at the helm…Ryuichi Sakamoto in charge of score!); but…I don’t imagine it makes for a great reaction, and…G has seen.

Shonnicus

Read comments and I must acknowledge my movie choice . I'm huge fan of Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid. Great chemistry between Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Director George Roy Hill direction of this film as taking the old dying western genre adding that new Hollywood 70's take.

REDR58

It might be because it is a foreign film (Italian/French/West German coproduction) about a possibly less-than exciting plot and set in the 14th century? I mean, I love it, but it only made about $7.5 million here in the US vs $25 million in Germany. Evidently it grossed over $60 million on a $17.5 million budget. I don’t know how popular the Umberto Eco book it’s based on did in the US, but the book sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

J. Valentine

I haven't seen dunkirk in a while, that's gonna be fun. I hope revenant comes back

Wyatt Nuxoll

Awe , man I know all quiet on tge western front isn't going to win , but man , this movie is incredible with its run along shots and it's non stop tension in the battle scenes

Jacob King

Love & Friendship is a delight. Whit Stillman is great with Damsels in Distress being a personal favourite.

Liquor & Swords

You've probably been told this a bunch, but Kingdom of Heaven needs to be the director's cut, not the theatrical. It's almost a completely different movie, including a character not seen in the theatrical.

JBK405

First time in a while that I voted for four options, but this poll has a bunch of great films. ...unfortunately "Dunkirk" isn't one of them and it looks to be in the lead. It's certainly not a BAD film, but I've never gotten anything more from rewatching it than I got the first time.

Martin

Cinderella Man would have been a great addition to this poll.

sarCC

I think it's one of Nolan's worst. But, then again, the last of his movies I liked was Inception.

Shane Darcy

Requesting to add ‘Carrie’ to this list

Michael Johnson

Semi-related to this poll - Time Bandits. Or really any Terry Gilliam movie...

George Amberson

Instead of watching The Revenant (which is a well made movie that features a committed performance by Leo, but suffers from the Hollywood machine unnecessarily fabricating the film's emotional core) go listen to The Dollop podcast on Hugh Glass and react to that instead.

Jonathan Wyman

If they watched Butch and Sundance they would probably put The Sting on a poll the next day.

MPH

Never! Dunkirk is one of the best films ever. Revenant is awesome, though. I'm a hunter and soldier, so I have a soft spot for both.

MPH

Fair point. They are essential, but Dunkirk is one of the best directors ever's masterpiece. They should just watch the entire list.

MPH

Dunkirk is not made for people who say "mid." It's for adults that enjoy thinking and feeling.

MPH

I hate how bad they make the templars look, but it's otherwise a good film. I love how they portray Saladin.

strange shadow

Kingdom of Heaven, but only if the Extended Director's Cut. It's one of Ridley's best. The theatrical cut is a mess.

Dioskur

"You said it yourself. Ben-Hur is not good" I didnt say that.

Johnny

Do you love gatekeeping language as much as you love the worst Christopher Nolan film? Fine, let's go with "technically proficient but soulless and overwrought."

Reece Chapford

Stephen King movies: Cujo 1983 Gerald's Game 2017 Carrie 1976 Doctor Sleep 2019 Pet Sematary 1989 Christine 1983

Ph4ZeD

I really hope the top two are Saturday/Sunday releases because that would be a banging weekend

JoeE

Would also recommend dazed and confused, almost famous, eight men out

Astraeos

Barry Lyndon is the king of Period Pieces. Shoulda been on there.... Next time.

Odd Thomas

Gone With The Wind The English Patient Testament of Youth (2014) Vertigo A Very Long Engagement

Honey Hermsen

What are you talking about? This is a poll for period pieces. Ooooooooohhhhhh 😆

James LaMar

Last of the Mohicans is an obvious on if you haven't seen it already

Smooticus

I think for Period Pieces, I would recommend the following (most have been listed already) - Barry Lyndon Gone With the Wind Gallipoli The Sting American Graffiti The Right Stuff Last of the Mohicans The Three Musketeers (1974, and the subsequent Four Musketeers) The Man Who Would be King The Wind and the Lion The Lion in Winter (the original dysfunctional family Christmas movie) A Man for All Seasons

Smooticus

I recommend Testament of Youth to friends kids (middle school and above) for summer reading. Always a hit. The movie's not bad either

No0neAtAll

I am going to recommend Spotlight, I am not sure if you can call it a "period piece" since the movie covers events from the 70s on but it does cover true events .

rictus grin

a few for movies for a future poll The Duellists (1977) Ridley Scotts first film Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985) The Devils (1971) Waterloo (1970) a mini series so slightly off topic I Claudius (1976)

George P Burdell

I hope they react to Kingdom of Heaven; love that movie. Don't think I've seen any other reactors do that one yet.

TechPriest

Dunkirk was limited by the director's insistence on total disuse of CGI coupled with unwillingness to budget for that. If you're going to reject the tech for some of the things it most excels at (crowds, building facades, erasing modern stuff in the skyline) and you're not going to pay up for the real thing, you're just deliberately producing an inferior product. So yeah, we get this mid movie so Nolan could show how much of a 'computer r bad emkay?!' purist director he was.

Kevin

Got excited I thought it was Emperors new groove

Shane Darcy

Well, if by Hollywood machine you mean a Mexican director who has always taken pride in achieving his authentic vision, then okay

George Amberson

That isn’t what I meant at all, and I actually gave the director some credit in mentioning that I thought the film was well made. So you can go back to not having hurt feelings again. 😃

It's an utter shame that the man who made The Duelists also made that giant piece of garbage Napoleon movie. The Duelists was incredible.

ALMOST FAMOUS!!! That's my favorite movie. Dazed and Confused is also awesome, as is Everybody Wants Some.

Aside from some of the other problems I have with Dunkirk, which I still enjoy generally, is… MINOR SPOILER BELOW DON’T PEEK ..showing the Spitfire crash and you can see there’s no engine in the obvious mockup of an airplane that isn’t a real airplane. Not that a real Spitfire should’ve been burned, of course but they should’ve gone to more of an effort to stick a fake engine in there. Spitfire engines were very prominent and obvious in the nose of the aircraft with the paneling off. That said the fact that they use real aircraft in the dogfight scenes was pretty cool, even though the German BF-109 fighters seen onscreen are not really German fighters but are instead Spanish HA-1112-M1L Buchón license built copies of those German fighters with the wrong nose profile (because it had a different engine) for a BF-109 and some other differences, but I guess we can’t have everything. I kind of like how the aircraft in Tora! Tora! Tora!, even though they were not real Japanese Zeros and dive bombers still look better than what we saw in a lot of other World War II movies. They went to a real effort to make them look as realistic as possible by physically modifying the lines of a real flying aircraft, mostly American trainers to look like the old Japanese aircraft.

Another great war movie is The Lost Battalion ( 2001 ) its about ww1 I've been trying to get someone on YouTube, literally anyone to react to it , but the film isn't really well known because it got lost in the fog of other great war films like black hawk down , we were solders , saving private ryan , but if you haven't seen the lost battalion I highly recommend it , you will like it , I promise

I missed an entire poll because of Patreon log-in issues. Dang. Great list of movies, really glad Dunkirk is winning. Such a fantastic movie. Saw some others recommend Citizen Kane and Dances with Wolves as period piece options... those are S-tier movies, highly recommend. My picks for future polls: Perks of Being a Wallflower Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Nebraska Manchester by the Sea Sideways About Time Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Late to the party here, but would've loved Butch and Sundance to get either first or second.
