I mean Leather is a very cheap, and surprisingly effective, way to protect yourself if you can't afford plate, chain or scale... which any newbie adventurer is unlikely to be able to do.

a Gambeson may beat leather, there's even evidence of it beating out the Greek heavy brass armour, but as you yourself said only a history nerd like you or I would know that and Meg doesn't seem to fit that description.
