I've talked to historians of magic and my question always is, "these grimoires look great, is there any evidence that people actually did theses ritual?" And the answer is various forms of "Who knows?" I think there's a bit more evidence of the home remedy kind of magic, and definitely for alchemy.

The last time my players had to interrupt a summoning I had a system where the cultists built up a charge as they ritualled and sacrificed. They could burn charge to summon things, the more charge the bigger the summon, so what actually got summoned was determined by how long the PCs took and how much the cultists felt pressured. Of course, then the druid wrapped a wall of thorns around the sacrificial vortex...

That's a fun idea -- I like the building-up-a-charge concept; that could tie in to the sort of overall lair effects.
