For me, the random monster generation isn't so much about the monster. It's about what comes with the monster, its treasures, territory, activity, likes and hates, enemies. Three of these and I have the basis of a scenario. And these things that I like to see in a table need to have some theme(s) which unite them, in the same way that rules of magic work. So it could be contagion or antipathy or sympathy, distance, religion or even colour (maybe not colour).

I often enjoy finding a theme that unifies basic concepts. It's a bit like character creation in your more random superhero games.
