I imagine the bat wings come from the original Greek description of having its feet upwards and its head below. So like a bat. In my game they collect blood for a big demon thing which then uses that blood to creature more and worse demons. So they tend not to hang around if threatened, biting once and then flying off with the stolen blood - and fetching something worse to defend them.
