Is it in this one where you questioned why there's so much detail in the monster descriptions that have no mechanical purpose? You were wondering why that is and thought that it maybe was to satisfy trivia nerds. I thought of another possible use. As a DM, if a PC found a wizard tome (for example) and demanded to know what was in it, in great detail, I could lean on this info to flesh out what was in it. If the info has no purpose mechanically, I wouldn't be breaking the game by using it.

I suppose so, but the majority of that kind of information in the book is completely uninteresting -- the mustard jelly detail is a rare exception. Most of it is just like 'the owlbear has a seven-month gestation period' or whatever.

I reckon that's exactly why I would include this in an off-the-cuff description of a wizard book, so the player gets bored and doesn't keep at me for more info :-) However, I also feel that wasn't the writer's intention...
