Yes, you rightly mention the dodgy racial interpretations. But I also know people who are interested in Half-Orcs because they themselves aren't gender specific. I think the thing is that people will interpretate source material to suit their needs.

I definitely think that the opportunity to play such a wide range of characters in RPGs has been a way for people to explore questions of identity -- and as you say, people use that in the ways that feel best for them. I don't know that the trappings of the half-orc *specifically* support that very well, but if that's what speaks to people then that's what speaks to people! I think that it's very hard to assign a single "real" meaning to things, most of all things that have so many different influences and so many different authors over such a long time. That's frustrating for people who want to categorise things, but it offers lots of opportunities for players to interpret things and be creative in their own way.
