Dear Lord is Q annoying! I also can't understand why anyone would want Rumpelstilskin in their SF. Do these people also like Jar Jar Binks? In my Folk Cthulhu game, Obeiron is sort of a trickster, and also contractually obligated. He might be Nyarlathotep, sort of. But he's extremely scary, even after saving his life, the PCs never really enjoy going to see him. Anytime they interact with anything faerie, in whatever circumstance, they are aware that they might be putting Obeiron's back up and have to pay the piper in horrible way. In Pilgrim, Sebastian Baczkiewicz's excellent audio drama series for the BBC, pretty much the most terrible thing our protagonist can hear is "The King of the Grey Folk loves you." It's worse, literally in this case, than a death sentence.

The idea is that Q (or the TOS light beings) exist to provide the characters with moral dilemmas they can't fight their way out of. For me, it doesn't land, quite apart from the ways in which it makes me personally unhappy.
