Although there's no mention of brandy, alcohol appears in the DMG. You can use it to remove various nasty oils such as fumbling or slipperiness and it can be produced by the Jug of Alchemy. And anyone brought up on Gygax would have a range of alchemical concoctions, spells of shatter and web, continual light stones, ten foot poles, herds of sheep and other life saving devices.
