It was the feeling of his chest burning in agony that awoke him. His eyes snapped wide open and he pushed himself up onto all fours in a rapid jerk as his mouth opened involuntarily and a mass of water was ejected up from his throat in great big buckets, soaking into what he idly noted through foggy, dazed eyes was sand.

His lungs were throbbing with agony and his head was killing him. 'Wha....what's going on?' he wondered panting deeply.

....Wasn't he drowned to death by that monstrous giant ocean spirit? 'No...I was stabbed by those fucking cunts trying to rob me...'

No, that wasn't right either?

Both?

Wait, how did he even know that thing was the Ocean Spirit?

"Ah!" he yelped curling into a ball as memories exploded through his mind. Erupting and clashing into each other. The memories of two very different teenagers surging into each other like crashing ocean waves.

"Good, it was a success I see." a calm female voice resounded in his ears.

Coughing, he threw himself around onto his back on instinct his hands curling into fists, smoke beginning to build in his palms as energy compressed, only to freeze and his eyes to widen once again.

The voice did indeed come from a girl. A hazy, translucent, beautiful girl who was floating above him mid-air. Dark skinned, white of hair and wearing a long blue dress that seemed to ebb and flow like the tides of the ocean.

He knew her. But he also didn't know her. She was fictional to one side of the memories he had, and yet the other had never seen her before.

Princess Yue of the Northern Water Tribe. Or rather now, the Moon Spirit.

"Y-you.." he gave a hacking cough and peered up at her through bleary eyes, "What did you do to me!?"

A smile spread across Yue's translucent face, "Much wisdom came to me upon my ascension, and it occurred to me, the Avatar may fail," she replied and just expected him to know what she was talking about, "This world needs a champion should that possibility come to pass, and thus I chose you. I pulled upon a soul none had claim to beyond the borders of the Spirit world and the La was only all to willing to pass on to me one he had claim to, a powerful human who had the ability to make a difference."

He grimaced. Despite the pain he was in and how hard it was to think with all the memories swirling in his head, he felt a surprising calm.

So that was it. He had been killed by the Ocean Spirit. And he had been killed by those stupid cunts who jumped him, ganged up on him and knifed him.

He was Yarden Odhar, Scottish teenager. But, he was also Zan, heir to the Ember Islands, prodigy Imperial Fire Bender and Fire Nation Army Captain, the overseer of the Fire Nation town and colony Rosaza, apprentice to the great Jeong Jeong the Deserter.

"...Y-you're an idiot." he couldn't help himself and snorted. He felt more Yarden than Zan, which told him who's consciousness was really dominate, even if it seemed more like a blend now.

But, the impulsiveness of Yarden ruled the day here and now.

"Oh?" Yue raised an eyebrow at him, a frown appearing on her face, "And why do you say that? I quite frankly think I've made quite the splendid plan." she clearly wasn't happy with the insult by her tone.

But, he was in too much pain to feel wary of the stupid dead girl that pulled him back from the dead. Because that is what she was.

He could summarize her plan already at this point. Zan, a powerful fire bender not far off of being a master, an intelligent, experienced and bloodied army captain who knew how to lead. The son of an Admiral, heir to one of the most luxurious places and richest families in the Fire Nation. And all that clout, intelligence and power in the hands on someone who should feel grateful to her for giving them life again?

On paper, it was actually a decent plan, beyond decent even. But she discounted something very, very simple.

She had dragged his soul after he died from his own world. Meaning there was some form of after life back there. An after life he would have been able to spend with his loved ones, friends, family and the like. And meshed his soul with that of a loyal Fire Nation teenager, who despite his own misgivings with the war, dutifully followed orders.

Because the Fire Nation was his home. His family lived in the Fire Nation. His and Zan's.

Because he was Zan now, just as much as he was Yarden Odhar.

It would be like asking him to betray Scotland because they were winning a war they started. And that was after dragging him away from his family and asking him to betray his other family.

He would never betray Scotland!

"Katara's hotter than you." he settled on replying with a cocky smirk directed at her instead. Surprising as it was, since white hair was to his tastes, but Yue was petite in build, where as, Zan had actually met Katara at Jeong Jeong's camp outside of Rosaza and he knew, she had an absolute dump track of an arse.

Zan had at least good taste because he had wanted to hit that, hard. And he would have put the moves on her if Zhao didn't come and ruin things, the prick. The prick who then forced him to enlisting in the navy for the assault on the Northern Water Tribe and getting him killed by the Ocean Spirit.

Funny how that worked out.

Yue flinched back, taken off guard from his sudden change of subject and looked at him like a fish out of water and completely confused.

He took a deep breath and placed his hands out behind him, leaning in the sand and looking up at her, the pain was beginning to fade, "So what's in it for me?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at her challengingly, "You seriously can't be expecting me to stop the Fire Nation in place of the Avatar if he fails, for absolutely nothing."

Yue stared at him at a loss for a moment before sighing, "What a greedy person," the white haired spirit shook her head, "Very well, what do you desire? Water Bending to go along with your Fire Bending perhaps? If I ask, La may bless you with it."

....That was a thing? He thought bending came from the Lion Turtles? But, he only thought on it for a few moments before snorting and dismissing the idea, "Yeah no thanks," he shook his head, "Let's try something better. Like for instance, that power of yours you used to drag me here to this world in the first place, how about that?"

People may have dreamed about entering their favourite series and such. But Avatar, really was not his first choice and never would be. Seriously, it was hundreds of years behind the technology of his world. No games, no televisions, nothing.

The only thing he couldn't find a problem with, was the fact that at least they had flush toilets somehow.

Fuck that noise. He wasn't interested in being stuck in ancient China land and being bored to death forever.

With that power, he could return to his own world-

"That is all you ask?" Yue blinked, cocking her head to the side, before nodding, "A simple matter to pass the power on. Though it is the power of a spirit, you will need to be bound to a spirit if you wish to use the power yourself."

And from there, he could go to other worlds with it as well. 'So help Aang save the world and I can get the power to basically jump realities.' he nodded to himself.

And he just needed to be bound to a spirit. Like Wan and Raava? Simple enough, he already knew how to go about that, he just needed a spirit to do it willingly.

Were the Lion Turtles spirits, he wondered?

"So help the Avatar save the world or do it in his steed if he fails, stop the evil Fire Nation and all that nonsense and you'll give me that ability?" He looked up into her eyes, "Have I got that right?"

"Ah.." Yue reared back again, at a loss for words for some reason. Then again, she was a stupid little princess that knew basically nothing anyway, "Yes, that will suffice."

He nodded and pushed himself up to his feet, feeling surprisingly stable and strong as he did so, "Alright, I'll get right on that." he replied and turned, walking away.

"W-wait...where are you going?" The moon spirit sputtered.

"Away from you and to do what you wanted me to." He replied without turning around even as she stared after him agape.

Arrogant of him for sure. But, the calm was beginning to leave him and the longer he stayed around that girl, spirit or not the more he got angry at her for her sheer audacity. Who the fuck did she think she was yoinking his soul and merging it with another dude without even asking?

He had half a mind to burn her and the Ocean Spirits little fish bodies out of existence when he was going to leave this place. Show her not to fuck with him.

Despite that though, he couldn't wipe the grin from his face either as he walked away from her.
Because as far as he could tell. She had no idea about him knowing about this world already.

He barely paid a glance to his surroundings as he left. He was on a small beach with a tree line into a forest not far off and in the distance he could see some buildings up a slope.

'I guess I'll call myself Zan for now.' he mused as he disappeared into the tree line. Zan Odhar, heir to the Ember Islands.

Or former heir, because no doubt he was listed as missing in action and his older brother Chan the disappointment was re-instated as the heir. And even if he turned up 'alive' it wasn't like things would go well for him. Ozai was a cunt after all, good odds that he would be called a failure for the shit that went down at the Northern Water Tribe and killed off or something.

Which really did suck. Because Zan had a very interesting fiance he hadn't seen in years. Ever since she had run off to the circus.

Getting Ty Lee as a fiance. What a lucky fucker.

Not that the old Zan was quite as settled on her alone. He was quite popular back in Rosaza after all, when he took over the town upon his ranking up to Captain he had made sure everyone was treated fairly, both Fire Nation citizens and the former Earth Kingdom citizens and with his strength, inheritance and rank alongside his good looks and reputation;

Well, his bed was rarely empty. Maybe that was why the soul of Yarden somehow ended up getting yoinked? Both of his past pre-fused selves were horny bastards.

Zan shook his head and put it out of mind for now as he walked into the tree line. He paused behind a tree and looked himself over.

He was dressed from head to toe in Imperial Fire Bender armour. He was quite proud of it after all, alongside his captain helmet.

'The boots and legs can stay.' he mused, stripping off the helmet and torso armour and casting them aside.

Bare chested, he reached inside the leg armour he was wearing into a certain little compartment on them and hummed as he pulled out two small brown sacks and gave them a shake.

The sounds of coins jingling together rang in his ears. "Good, seems I've still got all my dosh." he grinned.

Being the heir to the Ember Islands on top of being a hot shot Army Captain that oversaw an entire colony came with quite the 'allowance'. While it wasn't his families fortune, he had plenty enough to get him by here and now, in both Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation currency.

Zan had specifically had that small compartment made into his armour in case a situation came where he was ever stranded away from his allies and countrymen.

He had never thought of it going like this, but hey, he was just glad his previous self was pragmatic and smart enough to plan for something like this.

Bare chested, Zan stuck his money back in the compartment and began making his way through the forest. "Now I just have to find out when and where the fuck I am." he sighed, shaking his head.

At least he didn't have to worry about getting a chill or anything. Fire Bender for the win!

Well this is definitely an interesting start. I wonder how things would play out this time. Gotta admit I was waiting for either Pokémon or Stacking the Deck chapter, but this was good. Thanks for the chapter bud! 🍪
