Genre | The Whole Plate Episode 4

Genre is one of the building blocks of film language - but what genre does Transformers fall into anyway? https://www.patreon.com/loosecanon Sources: Corrigan, Timothy. Could we PLEASE move off of Transformers....I want to remain a Patron because I love your other content but I don't care about Transformers, and your immense amount of content on the subject is really making me question my continued support...

I feel like allot of the genre blend we're seeing now is the result of the audience's expectation that almost any tentpole release will have large action set pieces. "action scenes" have become more of a core cinematic tool then a genre convention. More akin to the cameras and lights then any tonal or story descriptor.

Lindsay is finally getting this out of her system after years of build up. She's done so much work on so many subjects for so long, we can give her this one summer can't we?

I've recently thought about superhero films as a genre and I'm starting to think they are reaching the point where they really shouldn't be considered their own genre and instead can be classified in the traditional genres depending on the movie. Or if you want to keep it (or your B.B.... genre) separate then certainly the other genres very much fit as subcategories.

I'm a recovering Homestuck (not really, I'm not sure total recovery is truly possible) and sometimes I still see weird reflections of it in the world. The troll civilization in Homestuck lasted long enough that things like genres became so complicated they couldn't really be given names, and yet their films were no less banal than standard human fare.

I don't mind your Transformers\Bayhem angle. However I did stop watching the franchise directly after Optimus Prime straight-up murders Megatron (tearing his head & spine off with an axe, iirc) and then executes his mentor\idol with a shotgun while he's begging for his life. (Although your fascination with Michael Bay's oeuvre seems to miss the least Bay of Bay movies: Pain and Gain)

Cedar Point...that's a white-America deep cut.
