In this special 'Doug's Choice' episode of The Extended Play Lounge, I'm turning to one of the first records Megan and I purchased after receiving our new turntable. It's a double live album featuring Marvin Gaye and the entire What's Going On album.

This rare 1972 performance at the Kennedy Center was the only time in Marvin's career that he would ever perform this entire album during a single concert. Sadly, we don't have 'Mercy, Mercy Me' included on this live recording.

So, sit back and join me as I listen (and play along) to Marvin Gaye playing some of his classics and his What's Going On album. The backstory of the performance itself if quite profound. I hope you enjoy!

Stop Propaganda

Mercy, Mercy Me had to be dropped because of technical issues making the track unsalvageable although it was performed and recorded. Also Marvin had a 4 octave vocal range that shines through the messiness of the performance..

Great footage and analysis, Doug. Thanks!

While I agree that the studio album is unimpeachable—and it's one I've always loved, every note in my memory—it's really nice hearing this rawer, rougher live version. You're right that it's not the most stage-polished version...but that's in a way what makes it interesting: we hear a team of fantastic musicians responding in real time to wherever Marvin takes them...

Great episode, thanks for all the background work that you do before listening and sharing your reactions.
