Patreon 2.0 Announcement - New Tiers Coming Soon (Patreon)

This is an important update for all Daily Doug Patrons...

Hey, y'all! Things are happening here at the Daily Doug Patreon. We are so grateful for all of you and for your support of our channel and content. 

As we move into 2022, we have reconfirmed our commitment to leading this community and delving into the music, art, culture, and ideas that help us along our journey. 

As a result, we're updating our Tier Structure. During February, patrons will be asked to update your membership to one of our new tiers for 2022. The detailed information is in the video and below:

The Existing Tier 1 will be replaced by a New Tier 1 called Helvering's Army. The perks will remain the same. Folks in Helvering's Army will have access to our Discord, the Patreon Polls, and general community posts. The new Tier will be $2 per month.

The Existing Tiers 2 and 3 will be replaced by a New Tier 2 called The Doug Club. In addition to the Tier 1 perks, this Tier will give patrons access to ALL of our pre-recorded (non-livestream) videos, including all episodes of The Extended Play Lounge, Behind the Score, and the new Fan Favorite videos. The new Tier will be $5 per month.

The Existing Tier 4 will be replaced by a New Tier 3 called The Council of Dougs. In addition to the Tiers 1 and 2 perks, this Tier will give patrons access to all scheduled (and unscheduled) Daily Doug Live hangouts as well as a dedicated Tier 3 Discord channel. Patrons can also access and view previously recorded livestream/hangout videos. Be a part of the inner circle that gives feedback and recommendations as to the direction and programming of the channel. The new Tier will be $8 per month.

Increases (from lower tiers to higher ones) are 100%, 150%, 25%, and 60% respectively. It's not that small (most members are probably experiencing increases in many areas, and in the end, a few $$ here and a few $$ there they do add up). Consider that most people who are currently in the $2 tier probably had some reason for not being already in the $4 tier, and asking these members to increase their contributions to $5 sounds like a risk of a large percentage of them just leaving. Personally I think it may be a mistake, if the community is still in a growing phase there is probably more to gain by keeping membership prices low and the growth rate higher. In the end free markets will likely do their work: some people will leave, some people will stay and other people will let their membership lapse and re-join every now and then. After the dust settles, the results will speak whether it was a good decision or not. It will probably be a one-way experiment though, if the price increase doesn't go well, bringing the prices back down will not bring back everyone that left (in business terms - member acquisition is harder than member retention).

Thank you for your comment. I’m very aware of the inherent risk in changing our tier pricing. It’s something that we’ve debated for months. It is our hope that folks will see the value in our content and be patrons at these new tier levels, which will now stay consistent.

No, it will at least be for 2022. As we've been discussing these past several weeks, these tier prices will likely be in place for multiple years.

Hello Jean-Michel. The new tiers will be active February 1, and you'll have the entire month of continued access in the current tiers before the original tiers get archived.

I see you're a current tier 2 patron. This tier will be unpublished on February 1, meaning no new people may enroll in it. We will keep your current tier active, though, throughout the month. During that time, we ask that you update your membership to one of the new tiers. Patrons that don't update their memberships will end up a Patron without a tier on March 1, still being charged but losing access to the videos. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Maybe nothing to do with the new tier structure but at the discord site all channels are suddenly ‘read only’. My fault?

Umm..I get it as you contribute daily. I do appreciate your depth and insight. I think that it may be a tad of gouging going on. You are a professor of music and have an income etc..some of us are in financial turmoil due to covid and other reasons. I do resent any type of gouging..Any You tube page is for fun not for income.. We are not here to supplement your end of day profits..We are HERE because we love what we HEAR..Consider me gone soon..but I will always listen online when available.

I do not want to pretend that I can speak for Doug as far as the details are concerned, but he has on a number of occasions in his videos remarked that he is not able to work as a professional teacher. The turmoil that you speak of is one of the reasons that is the case.

Hi Chuck. I lost my university teaching position and have not been able to secure any interviews yet for other open positions (which are few right now.) This channel and patreon have become my full time job. I do still have my part-time church gig, but it has always been a side gig. So, this is my shot at being my own boss, and I purposefully set the tier prices way below market value to start because I wanted to be as inclusive as I could, knowing that there was very little content here at the time. I'm proud of this content, and these new tiers are a result of me seeking to more properly value the content in the marketplace. I know that the increase in price makes continued patronage difficult for many. Trust me, I know what that is like. I'm glad you're here and hate to see you go. You're welcome back anytime. Cheers.

Thats cool. he actually wrote back about that. I will remain a patron at my current level. I am just frustrated right now due to losing my job over covid etc. I am trying to maintain some semblance of my prior life as an engineer so keeping active on sites like this is somewhat of a luxury for me now. I do not really like FB anymore so I rarely visit there. This has been an "out" for me for a while now and I love it. BTW I was fully vaxxed and boosted but still got very sick. I am a cancer survivor and heart patient along with diabetic so I am hard to put down! Doug was very understanding in his comment to me and I suppose I am guilty sometimes of speaking before thinking..

Can you make my rent payments? LOL! JK..After 40 years a mechanical and electrical engineer and designer I am actually facing homelessness. I have even cased out places in the woods to pitch a tent. I had sufficient retirement funds but when I had my heart attacks, cancer and subsequent surgery I had no insurance because I was between assignments. ( I contract ). I found myself close to a quarter million dollars in debt due to the medical expenses. No politics involved here but our system of health care is ridiculous. I have paid for health ins for 40 years but lose it when unemployed..that is just not fair. Most recently I reached my deductible of 6000$..lost my coverage because my company changed to a new administrator of ins..and gave them an incorrect birth date for me..The BD was a part of the login to apply changes or not to my coverage. I could not log in and no one responded to my inquiries. LOL..Admin is the largest part of the INS biz...and yet I had no response.. from admin. its just.

I fully support the idea of the new tiers. I don’t think that anyone understands how much work goes into putting productions like this together and as Doug has said previously in his videos, this is his full-time job providing content an education to all of us. I for one am certainly willing to give back in return for that.

Well said, Brian! "The Daily Doug" is the only Patreon subscription I have, and the understanding of music theory &amp; composition that I've gained from Dr. Doug has made me a better guitarist / bassist. Worth every penny!

I'm sure you'll agree that 6am Saturday my end is a bad time to ask someone to appear on camera. Apart from that, I've got the T-shirt and, I get it, it's become an earner for you (and fair enough, you do a great job presenting and we like it mate, keep it up!!!) With this simplification of levels I am going to go one higher, but can I just say, 1) Would it be possible to vary the times of your zoomies and live threads to take into account your followers from the far flung antipodes?; &amp; 2) Instead of buying you a beer, can I dedicate my patreon fee to buying the lady of the house a cocktail? Ref: the Pogues, and when are you going to do Gasworks Wall (Dirty Old Town).??

Hi Ian, thank you for your note. I am planning on varying the times of our hangouts so that the times can be more attainable for folks around the globe. Stay tuned for a poll to help establish what those new times might be.
