Its your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller here with a Paul Gilbert-style pattern smasher lick for Weekend Wankshop 293!!! Paul Gilbert's legendary Intense Rock VHS introduced me to the powers of sequenced shred licks, and my soloing has never been the same. But if you simply play those sequences up and down 3 note per string scale shapes, it can get boring FAST! Thats why you need to practice licks like this one that combine several different sequences with a bunch of legato and alternate picking action! Gear: Suhr Modern Satin, MXR GT-OD, Axe FX III Happy Festivus, everyone!!!!

hey everyone, practicing this right now and I'm wondering why Ben is so keen about the stroke direction. In my opinion this could be played much more economically if the first stroke on the next string (say the fourth note in the tabs) was a downstroke.

Because it is sending your picking hand in the direction of the next note after the one you are referring too, which needs to be a downstroke to play efficiently at high speed. At least that is how I have learned my picking techniques from the great Uncle Ben anyway.
