April 2022 Reading List! (Patreon)
Content
It's the last reading list before my maternity leave so there will be a few months break. Of course, if I do some across any interesting articles, videos, or podcasts whilst I'm off that I want to share I'll probably just throw them in the discord server!
Mostly videos this month as that's all my brain could handle! Hope you enjoy and please share your thoughts in our #reading-list-discussion channel in the discord server!
Videos
Cleaning Out My Closet & Getting It Professionally Organised! - why don’t we have walk in wardrobes in the UK? I don’t even think I have enough clothes to fill a space like Sierra’s so maybe it’s for the best. Either way I loved this video. So much satisfying organisation vibes!
TITANIC: Love Triangles and Compatibility - okay so I’m usually the first person to read into something completely innocent a sexual subtext HOWEVER apparently I missed something in Titanic???? The Cinema Therapy boys talk about how Cal is trying to get Rose to sleep with him and I was like WHAT?!?!! And they showed the clips of him giving her the necklace and asking her to ‘come to him’. I mean it’s all shrouded in such upper class English euphemism that I never clocked on he was talking about sex...? I thought he was trying to get her to open up to him emotionally. Just me? Did everyone else know he was trying to sleep with her?
The Financial Cult of Disney World - Chelsea from The Financial Diet at it again exposing my weakness! Did make me think a bit about if/when/how to take my own kids to Disney World (although more likely it’d be Disneyland Paris). I’ve always said I’m not taking them until they’re big enough to go on the rides with me because why go to Disney if you can’t go on the rides?! 😂 anyway, great video and Chelsea’s film recommendation of The Florida Project is a good one - excellent film!
Why Being Pregnant in Korea is Awesome/The Perks of Giving Birth in Korea - this is so interesting to see how different country’s government’s treat pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. The postpartum “spa” facility thing sounds incredible! But it did make me wonder, why are they needed? Do partners not get any paternity/parental leave? It’s planted the seed of maybe making a video about the cost of having a baby in the UK because I do get a lot of questions about the NHS from non-UK viewers but then can also include things like cost of all the STUFF you need, childcare, child benefits etc....
Mothering Without a Mother - this was really emotional and a really great video from Jessica and Claudia. The stuff about cultural identity and passing down traditions and food was really interesting too.
the hidden cost of good service (from an ex-waitress) - I mostly come across the term ‘emotional labour’ in relation to romantic relationships between people but of course it makes sense (duh!!) that it’s originally about workers managing feelings, especially in customer service roles, to do their jobs even if it’s not explicitly stated on their job description or being specifically paid for it. Apparently the connection between emotional labour, women, housework and ‘life admin’ comes from this article by Gemma Hartley in 2017. The stuff she talks about in terms of being aware that their kids are watching them perform their roles and how this impacts them was definitely food for thought.
The Ethics of YouTube Sponsorship - aaaaah so much nuance we love to see it.
The Cult of “Passive Income” - I definitely went through a phase of falling in to a passive income youtube rabbit hole and it was not fun.
