After months of watching most* of the Mac Pro 2013 used market prices slip, I opted to jump on a very interesting unit.

* There are still stubborn sellers insisting on $1500 or more for run-of-the-mill spec models. They also insist that people not waste their time asking for a lower price, so I didn’t.

This is a unit upgraded to 64GB RAM, dual 6GB AMD FirePro D700 graphics (AMD? What happened to ATi?), 2.7GHz 12-core Xeon E5 CPU and 4GB internal HD.

The interesting part is that the Mac Pro is mounted in the Sonnet xMac Pro Server. I remember reading about them years ago. This is a 4U rack-mountable enclosure which adds a PCIe expansion chassis within. One of the 3 PCIe slots is used for an SATA card, and so there are server-style bays for 3 additional harddrives (two 2.5” and one 3.5”, which all contain drives) plus a Blu-ray burner that can also play compact discs!

You are looking at the bottom of the Mac Pro. It can be fairly easily extracted for shooting video of it in upcoming projects.

Officially, my newest Mac model, the power is mind-boggling. The seller still didn’t keep the original Mac Pro box, but no one seems to have kept it in the many ads I’ve read... except one guy who wants $2300 for his Mac Pro 2013.

I’m still very happy with the Mac Pro 2010 running Final Cut Pro 7, but I will be able to dabble in more modern editors with MacOS 12. I have a brief window of time that I can buy Final Cut Pro X before it requires Mac OS 13... BUT, with ordering a Blackmagic Intensity PCIe import card for analog video, DaVinci Resolve will come with it. It may be worth a try.

It is safe to say my 2008 Mac Pro will continue to get less and less attention, except when I need Snow Leopard. Being the original owner, I've been able to keep the case in solid 'A' condition. More on that in my next video.

Suffice it to say, your support has allowed me to improve my video set-up and inventory of Macs significantly this year. The channel hit the all-important milestone of 12345 just the other day!

I'm very much looking forward to finishing the G5 video, because there is a lot of really fun stuff in there. Stay tuned for a special seasonal clip from the G5 video...

I thought the G5 video was the one I was most looking foward to, but that has now been bumped to second place, replaced by 2013 Mac Pro in Sonnect xMac Pro Server. What an awesome find!

Surprised Sonnet is still around, considering how all the other "classic" Mac expansion companies vanished in the 90s =P
