I've been noticing a fair drop in the local used value of the Mac Pro (2013). From $1,200 six months ago to about $800, and one as low as $500 (Canadian$). From what I see, the 2010/2012 towers are more desirable and retaining value, while the 2013 Mac Pro is actually becoming less valuable than the older towers on the used market. The Mac Studio 2022 may be a factor.

The cylinder Mac is definitely an interesting ‘miscalculation’ in the same way the G4 Cube was. I suspect there will be a collector market for it once it falls to a certain price. Something I am keeping an eye on, because it is a cool design and always good to have an actual unit when I talk about it in a video. Also, it’s more powerful than anything I currently have. But could I survive without Mac OS X 10.6?

And to update, I’m getting toward finishing a new video. Thanks for your patience in what turned out to be a very challenging month. In the meantime, let me know your thoughts and observations on the old Mac Pro.

If I recall correctly, this was one of the few times Apple teased a product well before it’s official release. The only other time I can think of is Steve introducing “iTV”. The hype was real for this computer. A shame it is largely remembered as looking, and performing, like a trash can.

I absolutely love this machine. I recall when I first laid eyes on one - a client had purchased two a 2.7/D700 models. It was a real call-back to a more experimental era for Apple. Beautifully engineered and well made. Unfortunately, it was also firmly an appliance - with the proprietary GPUs severely limiting the longevity of the machines. I wish Apple persevered with this design - it was still a well-priced, competitive machine on release. Unlike the latest iteration..

Good observations, Chris. Upgrade guides for this model read like the old 'Upgrade your Macintosh 128K' guides. Definitely the 'appliance' mentality.
