The End Of Xbox Is Upon Us...? (ft. Sacred Symbols) | Defining Duke, Episode 162

After weeks of unaddressed rumors surrounding Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves coming to PlayStation, the powderkeg blew for Xbox this week. Gears Of War, Halo, Starfield, Indiana Jones, and a growing list are all reported to be going multi-platform. The only official comment we have on the matter is no sort of denial, but rather a "see you next week." In a DEFCON 1 level episode of Defining Duke, we opted to hold summit featuring each side of the aisle. Joining the Dukes are the Sacred Symbols boys. Is Xbox bowing out of the hardware space? If so, what does this mean for the competition in the gaming space with PlayStation remaining unchallenged? While it's all but confirmed that Xbox games are headed to PlayStation, the question remains in what capacity? For years, Xbox fans generally understood the idea that these would arrive thanks to Game Pass. Now, it seems Microsoft is doing this for sustainability. Naturally, fans of the platform feel betrayed leading to a plethora of meltdowns online. What happens to their digital libraries if an exit is made? Is Xbox throwing the towel too early when the vision is just about to come to fruition? The questions continue to mount as we had over 300 write-ins to sift through, so let's discuss the very future of Xbox and what the rationale behind their next phase may be. ABK games will be multiplat day 1. Bethesda games will be multiplat either day 1 or within 6 months, working towards all day 1 eventually. Xbox Games Studios will be Xbox exclusive for 2+ years at least, possibly permanently, depending on the game. They will keep releasing their games into Game Pass, because that is the draw to purchase an Xbox. With the possible exception of Call of Duty, I could see that being a one year delay. This is happening because of how big the gaming division has become with all the acquisitions and how poorly this generation of Xbox has been selling. If Xbox had sold 50+ million units so far, this wouldn't be happening. Microsoft has to go outside to bring in the money they need to make to sustain Xbox. I also don't think they should bring Game Pass to Playstation or Nintendo. Sell that shit individually for $70 a piece and rake it in..

To be consistent with my statements about Playstation, I think that if they wait 2 years before bringing their exclusives to Playstation, they should still have something to bring people over to Xbox. Just like if Playstation waits 2 years before porting to PC, it still gives people a reason to go over to Playstation. I heard that Xbox has cancelled their mid-generation refresh at AMD, but also heard that Intel may have been talking to them, so with any luck that means that MS is going to try to get out ahead of the PS6 and launch their new generation a year or two early and do it with something drastically different from Sony's AMD chip, because they know that the last time they were really ahead was when they had a year head start. The lack of a mid-generation refresh to me means that either this is the case, or they're giving up on the hardware platform... I will say this will make me less likely to buy the PS6, just because I don't think Sony is going to be trying hard without a real competitor.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment that Sony PS3 days were some of the most fun to follow. It WAS hysterical! I didn't buy one day and date and later on had them earn my support through a series of great decisions and changes. Watching them come back from those early mistakes was really fun to follow
