Alan Wake Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 332

We're about 13 years late on this one, but we promise it's for good reason. See, Alan Wake 2 -- Remedy's long-awaited sequel to its 2010 one-time Xbox-exclusive horror game -- finally launches in late October. And it's given us cause to want to get back to it, especially after it became more easily accessible with the 2021 launch of Alan Wake Remastered on PS4 and PS5. (Indeed, it was on PS+ Essential one month a while ago, so you may already 'own' it.) Thus, I (Colin) solicited the assistance of two people in my orbit, Rick Hoeg and my brother Dagan. Rick is an Alan Wake superfan, and indeed it was his mention of the sequel during our Final Fantasy XVI conversation earlier this year that set this bug in my head to begin with. Dagan, on the other hand, is like me: New to the title and coming in with fresh eyes. Our chat is wide-ranging, spoils the game in its entirety, and is particularly careful to not talk about any parallel offerings that may ruin its wider universe (like American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Control, or whatever is known about Alan Wake 2 pre-release). In short, we love Alan Wake. It's unlike anything we've ever played. And while we eagerly-await the sequel, there's no time like the present to gush about the original.

One of my favorite games ever I'm so glad you guys checked it out. It's the perfect mix of Twin Peaks, Stephen King and Twilight Zone. So excited for part 2 since I never thought Remedy would get the chance to continue the story I can't believe it's been 13 years

Control is one of my favorite games of all time, and it’s the game that got me into Remedy. I played Alan Wake after. I love the “Remedyverse”

Gareth Handa

I only played it last year for the first time and loved it. Yes, the controls and a bit crap but it's so atmospheric and cool to play.

Colin, are you aware they announced a TV series for alan wake with AMC? not sure if it's still happening though as I haven't heard any updates on it recently...

Lewis Buchanan

Any reviews on this I will watch. It is fascinating to hear people's takes on this games story and premise.

I’ve been looking forward to this episode ever since it was mentioned! Control drew me into this universe and I’ve been hooked ever since and played Alan Wake Remastered recently. I am very much looking forward to Alan Wake 2 after I’ve had my fill with Spider-Man 2 right before that haha.

Josh Paradysz

This was great! I would love a follow up episode going into American Nightmare and possibly the other two DLCs?

Kaim Argonar

You should definitely try out Quantum Break it’s also very good and has a lot of connections to AW!!

Kaim Argonar

Colin the reason why Quantum Break is not in the “Remedyverse” is because Microsoft owns the IP and remedy has no control over everything that happened in that story. Technically it’s part of it but there are not allowed to say so because they don’t own that game and story. Sam Lake just confirmed that last week on kinda funny.

Avery Abrams

Cynthia weaver is the basically the log lady from twin peaks

Caleb Greer

Yes, Children of the Elder God is on Spotify. You’re welcome

Zeke the Plumber

So I downloaded it on PC Game Pass and apparently that version is kinda borked. Pretty weird visual glitches. Switched over to my Series S and I’m a couple hours in. Really like it so far. I didn’t realize it had such a great cast. I definitely see how Control’s combat was born from Quantum Break

PRETENTIEUX

Great show. Never played Alan Wake but considering it now. Thanks gentlemen.

Cormac

Playing for the first time at the moment! Think I'm near the end of episode two (just reached a campsite). Game is really good, bit clunky in parts but there's something really likeable about the combat, but it's the world and the atmosphere that keeps me coming back, it's addictive.

PRETENTIEUX

I enjoyed this episode and I've never played or really heard anything about the game. These three are easy to listen to. I'm considering checking the game out now.

Lewis Buchanan

Believe me. if you love good story writing Alan Wake and it's DLCs are just perfect. Also if you want to elevate that story play CONTROL as it's in the same universe.

Playing through the Alan Wake remastered recently just solidifies that it is my favorite game of last generation by a large margin. Excellent show!

Cormac

Beat it a couple of days ago, it's good and worth playing just for the atmosphere alone. I actually quite liked the gameplay too, but I have absolutely no idea what was going on in the story haha. Will pick up the second in a couple of years

Brad Felix

So glad to have podcasts like this to go back and listen to for older games when I play them for the first time. Always a great discussion had

Vito Chiaramonte

Really enjoyed this, I don't think I'll take the time to go all the way back but this kept my interest super high
