We're about 13 years late on this one, but we promise it's for good reason. See, Alan Wake 2 -- Remedy's long-awaited sequel to its 2010 one-time Xbox-exclusive horror game -- finally launches in late October. And it's given us cause to want to get back to it, especially after it became more easily accessible with the 2021 launch of Alan Wake Remastered on PS4 and PS5. (Indeed, it was on PS+ Essential one month a while ago, so you may already 'own' it.) Thus, I (Colin) solicited the assistance of two people in my orbit, Rick Hoeg and my brother Dagan. Rick is an Alan Wake superfan, and indeed it was his mention of the sequel during our Final Fantasy XVI conversation earlier this year that set this bug in my head to begin with. Dagan, on the other hand, is like me: New to the title and coming in with fresh eyes. Our chat is wide-ranging, spoils the game in its entirety, and is particularly careful to not talk about any parallel offerings that may ruin its wider universe (like American Nightmare, Quantum Break, Control, or whatever is known about Alan Wake 2 pre-release). In short, we love Alan Wake. It's unlike anything we've ever played. And while we eagerly-await the sequel, there's no time like the present to gush about the original.

Been looking forward to this since Colin mentioned it. I myself, beat it for the first time just two weeks ago.

I recently played this in anticipation of Alan Wake 2 (which looks incredible). I’m in the camp that feels the gameplay gets stale after awhile, but it’s still a great game and I love the story and atmosphere.

The remaster didn't hold up for me but man, I have very fond memories of playing this game back in 2010. One of my favorite 360 titles for sure

Love this! Alan Wake has been one of favourite games since it came out. It and Dead space were huge for getting me into horror games back in 360 days.

Avery Abrams

It’s really only Twin Peaks related in aesthetic. Story wise it’s very different.

Alan wake is a great game Colin.

I love this game, hope Alan Wake 2 will be just as good🤞

I just want to say I forgot about Hoegs stroke until the end of the episode. And for no reason then it just popped into my mind. He sounds great. He mentioned in a previous episode he was still relearning some things, and I’m sure he’s still recovering but just wanted to say it seems like he’s made amazing progress. Very happy for him.

The remastered version has QR codes hidden around the game. They link to a YouTube video

Looking forward to listening to this when I can. I’ve consumed every breadcrumb Remedy has put out about a sequel for the last 13 years. From the fake Remedy blog house of dreams to the easter eggs and connections in their following games, I’ve been chomping at the bit to see what happens next.

Thanks for doing this guys. Love Alan Wake!

I’m so glad Colin ended up liking this game. I played it for the first time this year as well in preparation for the sequel and I loved it.

I’ll add that QB and AW have ties, there’s hints in AW2 with characters or mentions having names that are synonymous with characters from QB. I feel like this is in case they get control over Quantum Break from Microsoft further down the line.

I think Hoeg is another secret weapon. Just like Colin used to say about Dagen in the past. Absolutely a great episode! Here's hoping Hoeg will return to the spoilercast once Alan Wake 2 drops.

I LOVE Alan wake and all games remedy. It pains me I’ll have to sit out Alan wake 2. No physical copy means no go for me. That aside, awesome show! Always a fun show with Hoeg on board

Awesome episode. Alan Wake was the first game I ever played on my 360, Christmas Day 2011. I love it so much! I recently replayed through the remastered version on series X with the HUD turned off, and I have to say it really enhances the experience IMO.

Great episode! So glad to see you coming around and giving Alan Wake another go, I would love to see knockbacks through the Max Payne trilogy too 😉

Amazing episode - spoilercasts are my favorite!

I just finished Alan Wake this morning. I’ve been looking forward to listening to this. Alan Wake is now one of my all time favorites. It’s basically adult Luigi’s Mansion and I fucking love every minute of it.
