Great Artists Steal | Sacred Symbols, Episode 271

Hollywood's labor problem may not be an isolated event in the entertainment industry for much longer. A recent press release from actors union SAG-AFTRA indicates that their members will vote to authorize a strike upon further negotiations with 10 major entities in gaming, including the likes of EA, Take Two, and even Sony-owned developer Insomniac. After all, the guild represent voice and performance actors in many of our favorite games. Yes, the consequences for not getting a deal done could extend far and wide. But it's also important to make note of an important fact: Otherwise-soulless mega corporations that exist entirely to propagate creative content should appropriately pay the creative people that fuel them. And yes, AI plays an inevitable -- but dangerous! -- role in the future of the humanities, and needs to be accounted for. Other news this week hinges on Final Fantasy XVI DLC chatter, tons of Starfield-related talk (since Chris is obsessed), and some new announcements, release dates, and so on. We wrap things up with listener inquiries touching a myriad of topics, including hoarding items in RPGs, the importance of playing a game right when it launches, the preposterous GTAVI/$150 rumors, and fighting back against a neighbor who won't leave your lawnmower alone no matter how much you may want him to. holy shit, Dustin got a HAIRCUT

Cun

Nice cut, Dustin!! As someone who just did a trip to Japan WITHOUT getting a cut first, I must say you've made the right call. It's HOT over there.

Joseph Gedgaudas

I think it’s interesting that Matty usually sides with the critics that Colin thinks are too harsh on games, but we’ve never gotten a discussion between the two on that subject.

PRETENTIEUX

On my phone I have my text messaging app set to automatically convert "and" to "&" when I type it. This was originally in order to save space but i just like the way it looks more. On PC I don't have this unfortunately.

Colin, you miss my reasoning for finding game scores very useful. For me, metacritic is not the sole metric I use when purchasing a game. It's one of many. And same with movies and Rotten Tomatoes. I usually already know if I want to buy a game or watch a movie in a vacuum. Scores are useful to me as a comparison tool. Not everyone is like this, but money is not the largest obstacle between me and entertainment. Time is. Therefor, I will look at scores to compare different games or movies together. Not in a granular way like one game is 86 on metacritic and one is 87 so I'll always pick the 87. Rather, in a tiered way. If I'm looking at two movies that are both interesting and one is a 61 on RT and the other is an 89 then I probably will check out the 89 first because I only have so much time for entertainment and I don't have time for entertainment that fails to entertain. I think many people feel like I do. Instead of looking at the individual number I think people look more at the general 10s digit and even then more as a tool to narrow down their entertainment search than make a definitive purchasing decision.

Whoa, stand down guys, you made the English language better 🤣 You literally butcher it on a daily basis, and on the political governance you are having a laugh. How can your political system be better when politicians can literally bring down the country and shut it down.

Right—but this only works if your tastes generally align with a consensus about what is and isn’t “good,” and that’s not the case for everyone. Not to speak too much on Colin’s behalf, but he and I are somewhat alike in that we are both diehard fans of less popular genres—he’s all about old-school 2D platformers, I’m a visual novel and puzzle game fiend. The kinds of games I adore tend to get 7/10s to 8/10s , so for me, scores become much less useful. Instead, it’s much more helpful for me to skim through a few reviews of a game (or movie, or whatever else) to figure out whether or not it’s going to be for me, based on things like the quality of writing, characters, difficulty, etc. I understand what you mean about limited time, of course, but ascribing a number to a work of entertainment feels inherently reductive to me—I need at least a little more to understand if I'm going to like something or not. I may be an edge case, but I’m just trying to offer a different perspective here.

Seeing Colin's love for average games makes me surprised that he's not an Xbox fan .

Stinkling

Eh, id argue both xbox and playstation have mid exclusives, so checks out that he hates Nintendo so much these days. They make actual good games and it spooks him.

Jason

Oh look the guy ranting about how Twitter is horrible and is full of "stupid inaccurate opinions" is also laughing and bragging about how he told someone to kill themselves with a gun. ...Very mature. Such a good voice of reason. Definitely not part of the problem....

Chris has checked out of political and cultural stuff over the last few years, and doesn't really know much about either topic. All he's got is snark, and he only ever had a superficial understanding of either topic, to begin with. It's easy to be a socialist, and demand everyone cough up more dough and expect the govt to create the ideal system. With that said, the freakout video he was responding to was insane. To be clear: I like Chris, having enjoyed his content before Sacred Symbols and his presence on the show. It wouldn't be the show without Chris. I also agree that the Hollywood strikes are generally good. The cultural is political, nowadays, because it's been made that way by people that largely agree with Chris politically. He's checked out and doesn't understand that, and swings wildly with all the snark in the world, but the forces that tried to wreck Colin's professional life are still going strong in the industry. The pronoun thing is just one small sign of their ongoing dominance, even though getting super upset about it isn't productive.

A true gender-neutral bathroom would just say “Bathroom” or have a sign indicating a toilet. A sign showing the depiction of a man, a woman, and a half dress is political. It is not meant to neutral at all. Somehow this is lost on Chris

Greg McDonald

The guy that ranted on Starfield's pronouns is insane of course. But the "all genders" half dress in Dead Space was pretty eye-rolling. If it had just said "Bathroom" no one would have noticed.

Robert Graham

Being able to choose pronouns in a menu is not indicative of a “larger problem” in games. Gender identity evolving in games is just mirroring real life and how it has changed in recent years. Relax people.

Wesali1996

Starfield asks you if you are a man or woman when you select your body type. The pronouns are different entirely and are pandering to a small minority of people who would screech if it wasn't there. Wouldn't stop me playing the game by the way.

Germanos

Nooo! Please don't start from Evangelion! It's not a great mecha anime, it is depressing and has the most infuriating cry-baby characters. It's emo as f. Good mecha anime: - Gundam 00 - Macros Plus - Patlabor - for fun/comedy content with mecha, got to Full Metal Panic - Vision of Escaflone for romantic mecha content (more for girls thou)

Jdummann92

Just thought I'd add this to the Starfield discussion and its Metacritic score. It is at an 87 on Opencritic which doesn't weigh the reviews so however the algorithm works, it isn't substantially different

Grosface

Chris looks exactly like Joe Burrow in this thumbnail and it’s hilarious

Cun

Thanks for reading my question this week, Colin. You three all had hilariously relatable answers about inventory management. Was fun to listen to!

Oh yeah I must say the Colin's "Situation" speech is Truth always lived my life like I am cool till you put me in a situation. 🤌 S Tier.

Lawson72

Hopefully for Spider Man 3 we get at least 19 in of carnage.

Heelvsbaby is an entertainer, people act like that was a fanboy with real rage, like there was a spycam recording a real reaction of a fanboy Twitter user or something. It's just pathetic how many people chased that bait. That sadly helped bury the overlying problem. The game does not let you choose to be a man or woman, rather pick your pronoun and body type a or b. For a game you role play in you are not allowed to choose your gender, just a pronoun. You are not a woman playing starfield, rather a human being that has decided to be addressed as she/her. Pronouns mean nothing to me, what does is clearly forcing me to partake in a stupid idealogy where there are an infinite number of genders. It is like trying to tell me I have to go to church every Sunday or I will go to hell. When you apply the logic of the game, no one is a man or woman, are you guys okay opting out of being a man? How about your spouse? They okay opting out of being a woman? Do you want your children to be raised as their gender or be raised to believe no such thing exists? If you would answer no to any of these, then no you are not okay with Starfields identity politics. Despite no one caring on the podcast, you guys have no problem riding on your high horse in the pitch black preaching how you see nothing wrong here.

Zach

In regards to the strikes, I have no issue with people fighting for their bag. They absouletly should as should everyone. No one else is going to advocate for you so you better damn well do it. Now with regards to AI, I think the "human" element is being overstated a bit. I think it is a pretty rare instance when a product is true human genius ie an original. I think a lot would agree that GTA 3 on the PS2 was a moment of human genius. Then came the copycats or what you could think of as easily AI capable. Here I'm thinking of The Getaway, Mafia, Saints Row, etc. It's like going to an AI prompt and saying give me GTA 3, but with these variations. I was thinking about this the other day and it can be seen in TV too. 3 of the biggest sitcoms during the 90s revolved around the character's daily issues with the main settings being their apartments and a place to drink coffee. Seinfeld in New York at a diner and Jerry's apartment, Friends in New York at a coffee shop and the 2 apartments, and Fraiser in Seattle at a coffee shop and Fraiser's apartment. It can be easily copied with a few spins on it and boom you have a new sitcom cough cough The Big Bang Theory in Pasadena the 2 apartments and the comic book shop. The setup for these shows all look like someone fed an idea to an AI and said give me variations on this idea. We don't truly understand yet how the human brain comes up with ideas, but to me it seems more and more like how an AI generates output. From the day we are born we are like a sponge soaking up the data around us that our senses are gathering. All of this data we gather shapes us and informs how we think. This is seeming to be true for current AI models. They feed it a lot of data and from that data it forms its output. The more data it is fed the more accurate it becomes. Same is generally true for humans. Personally I think people are going to have a come to Jesus moment with AI that a lot of things we thought were uniquely human aren't quite so and can be easily programmed. The scariest part to me is us not knowing anything about our own consciousness so how will we know when an AI has reached it. Just my 2 cents.

Otrant

Hating on the Playstation Portal seems logical if you, like me, lament a future where streaming games becomes popular enough to affect what kinds of games will be developed, leading to fewer games which rely on quick response times (Rhythm games, Fighting games, first person shooters, platformers, 3rd person action games, etc.)

Gooch Gobbler

People upset about the Starfield pronoun thing or the Deadspace thing.....I can't stress this enough: you are so unfathomably boring

Pan Ic

I do appreciate Colin playing some of the less sung titles and his unique voice in the space. At the same time see him skip three potentially flagship titles to play Aveum and Forspoken just to be the contrarian is a bit much. Another great episode boys! Safe trip Dustin.

Liam Fagan

Someone please challenge Chris on his highschool level opinions. His constant interruptions too are making this show almost unlistenable.

Jei Tee

Watching this late and hearing Colin make the comment "...until Aaron Rodgers tears his ACL in week 4" hurts.

The Vita's still in my rotation. The Steamdeck has taken a chunk of its time though. It's still my 3rd biggest backlog however so it'll be in rotation for a long time. I also have a lot of restraint on buying games, so much so lately that I keep forgetting to buy new games even when they go on sale... This is why my PS5 backlog is so small. I've just been holding off so much on buying new games this year since I haven't been playing as much. Digital tracking: My playtime this year has been 30% PS5, 30% PC/Linux, 10% Vita, 10% Switch, 10% Steamdeck, 5% 3DSXL, 1% PS3, and a lot of other random systems like GBA and NES filling the remaining. (Backlogs remaining: Linux at 457, PS4 at 330, Vita 282, Windows 271, PS3 213, Switch 56, PS2 42, DS 18, 3DS 17, PS5 16, Xbox One 15, PSP 4, Wii 3, GBA 1. Theoretically all of those PS4 backlogs are now PS5 backlogs, since my Vita backlog includes all my remaining digital PSP and PS1 titles as well.)
