For the first time since 2016, Sony has increased the price of its PlayStation Plus subscription, and the torches and pitchforks are out en masse. See, there's no doubt the increases are large -- $20 a year more at minimum is nothing to sneeze at -- but it's also important to assess what the service was when it launched in 2010 at $50, and what it's become today at $80 and above. Now's a better time than ever to truly assess what you even get out of PS+ to begin with; the answers people arrive at will be vastly different, as you'll witness during our extensive conversation. We also touch on other big news this week -- PlayStation Portal gets dated, Volition closes its doors after three decades, Sea of Stars does big numbers, and more -- and we wrap things up with a litany of listener inquiries, as is our tradition. What are our current thoughts on PlayStation Stars? Is the console gaming gender gap officially closed? Could big sites and creators do more to avoid spoiling products? Will Colin ever recover from Dustin and Chris not understanding his Can't Hardly Wait reference?

I sense that Chris feels obligated to say goodbye to the audience at the end of these podcasts and part of him dies every time.

Best time of the week, day off, new Sacred and nothing to do. Bouta pack this bowl and journey through Starfield.

"More like PlayStation minus!" - heard on the playground

Big titty drinker

remember when Colin and the crew were saying that we needed to brace our selves for what starfield is gonna do? Loooool this podcast is always so consistently off on predicting what games are gonna pop off and which ones are not 😭

Bryant

Um, what are you talking about? It’s doing very well on Steam and it’s still in its early access period. Sorry that you can’t play it on your preferred plastic box

Andrew Cuschieri

Now these percentages are all biological women, correct? 🙃

Trapgunner

I would 100 percent buy a sexy sacred symbols calendar and hang it up at work.

I don’t have any issues with the price hike. Inflation is a bitch, and everything is increasing. For what they’re asking, I still think it’s a good value. I played four games from extra this month alone. If I didn’t play anymore in 12 months, I’d still be ahead. Plus, I use cloud saves a lot, the “free” games each month are a bonus, plus the discount on PSN store is a huge plus since I buy digitally. We are talking about a few bucks more a month, that's not going to make or break anyone.

Colin - The PS3 wasn’t out yet when the original Saints Row came out…

Two things: 1. I don't know if this is tracked or not, but could the abnormally high female player base be mothers who buy the console for their sons but because a credit card/debit card is under a woman that she is counted as the owner? 2. If you buy digital, Stars is amazing because you can redeem your points for PSN credit. 2 full price games essentially gets you $5 back.

I JUST GIT MY COPY OF SUPER PERILS OF BAKING AND OMG Y’all this physical edition fucking rules. Thank you so much and for incredibly fast shipping time. Can’t wait to play this and Armored Core intermittently

“Stinky switch” Colin still just doesn’t get it. Still love you though bud!

Who’s gonna let Dustin know it’s Yin and Yang and not Ying and Yang

To Chris - If contact lenses fit properly you shouldn’t even feel them.

Walrus4300

I can’t believe you guys talked about Jared Fogle when Chris Chan had his charges DROPPED!

Subscription services like Spotify have absolutely ruined the music industry and the ability for artists to make money on their work, even though Spotify itself is raking it in. Only a matter of time before this starts happening to game devs. The quality of all entertainment is dropping, its obvious and it’s because people refuse to pay for the content, so publishers, labels etc just go for what sells in the short term and not what’s good.

Gonna cancel ps + and sign up for gamepass. Especially when call of duty will be in there now. I don’t need online for PlayStation. I’ll just play SPiderman and a few games on my ps5. I think Sony made a huge mistake. Many will go for gamepass now I feel like. This helps Xbox in my honest opinion.

Tyler

Anyone know what the last game chris beat is? 😂

Luke Silletta

I'm curious why there are so few pro women gamers. There is no barrier to entry physically to gaming that would prevent them from competing at a high level. Yet the playing field is very sparse. The most notable I've seen is in the fighting game community. The MOBA community? I think its pretty much zero.

This is more the fault of the poor naming structure, but several times Dustin said Extra when he meant Essential and I kept getting confused for a few seconds which tier he was actually talking about.

Dustin, PS+ has three tiers!!! Essential, Extra, and Premium. This whole conversation going over the price increases was almost unbearable. Essential/Extra are used interchangeably and I don’t understand the complaints because of it. Hopefully we catch this in the future.

Mark Horner

The armored core combat reminds me a lot of returnal.

Perfect show title :)

Douglas Morreale

It seems devs and platform holders could increase their costs tenfold and Colin would still defend it from those pesky ungrateful "gamers."

I'm actually looking forward to generation zero PS5 been playing the ps4 version with my friends and had a lot of fun :)

Josh Gamez

I'm generally pretty proactive about just stacking on additional years of PS+ during the big holiday sales they have periodically so I'm locked in through like 2025 as is. I might add on another year or two before the price jump just to be safe lol.

Greg Hommel

I really wish someone would discuss this on the show. You guys approach the PS Plus tiers in the most cynical way possible. You discuss the service as if the only games on it are what has been released since the tiered structure appeared. I subscribed to PS Now before the change. There are hundreds of great games that rolled over from Now to Plus Premium. There are easily 10 games per year to enjoy. For me, an even mix of games I would not have purchased and some that I might have that I won’t now. Just this week I have downloaded all three modern Tomb Raider games and Assetto Corsa: Competizioné. I’m currently playing Kena: Bridge Of Spirits. Unbelievable quality, plenty of value. I usually can’t decide what to try. So you can say you don’t want it, but you can’t say there is no value. The cost of every game is literally the value. Whether or not you want to play the game does not detract from its value. A Ferrari costs $300k, a Ford Fiesta costs $18k. Which one is more valuable?

Robbie Cooper

Good show and I normally agree with Colin and his game choices but Immortals is terrible and I played Ride to Hell Retribution and liked it.

Jack

Since you guys brought up leveling in Far Cry, I think it was cool how some gear in FC6 had tangible bonuses instead of nonsense stat increases. The best 2 that I used all the time were a head piece that refunded ammo on a headshot kill and a chest piece that refunded grenades, throwing axes, etc. on kills with those items. Definitely affected the way I played
