Switch 2 Backwards Compatibility - What’s the Catch? | Punching Up: A Nintendo Podcast, Episode 5

Welcome back to another episode of Punching Up! Nintendo has a spotty history of backwards compatibility. We've seen examples where they went above and beyond, like on the Wii with GameCube backwards compatibility, but also completely left the prior console behind, like NES to SNES. However, the world has changed, and we have a glimmer of hope that Nintendo is changing with it. Recently, during a shareholder's meeting, it seems like Nintendo intends to bring our accounts forward with their "next-generation console." Does this mean our games and purchases are safe, or are we doomed to repurchases and upgrade fees? We have a ton more to cover this week too! Everybody 1-2 Switch is a disaster and a baffling release, and new Sega Genesis games have been added to NSO! We also packed in a ton of write-ins. Should you play the original Super Mario RPG before the remake? What would our ideal Switch accessories be? Did we enjoy the Pikmin 4 demo? Listen now and enjoy. The most child friendly console wont be the one to go digital only first. Not sure why any thinks Nintendo would be stupid enough. I buy my kids switch games as gifts on birthdays and christmas, we wont be doing that if its digital only.

You still would if it was a code in a box, and that was your only option.

yeh but its not ideal. That happened with Just Dance, if id known before buying, i wouldnt have got it. 2 kids sharing cartridges, thats the way its been since we were young, and nintendo knows theyll take a hit in sales if they take that market away.

Think you guys are forgetting this direct wasn't just any old random direct, it was in the place of the June E3 slot, and the showing taking that into consideration was weak, which is why people are calling it proof of a dying console. Any other slot and it would be a fairly normal direct sure, but that was the big summer direct? If you aren't a massive mario or pikmin fan what exactly did they offer you? Nothing... I get it, people being negative and dunking on things is annoying, but we also need to be honest, for THE big direct of the year that was a let down. Maybe we get another one with games that arent mario and pikmin in July or August, but im not holding my breath. Great show of course regardless ;3

The remake question was interesting, it's almost like they don't want to remake Miyamoto games when you look at it.

I totally had that experience with Pokemon as a kid and it being banned. My parents definitely eased up on that, I remember being shocked when my mom was asking about Pokemon Go and if I was aware of it.

Shoutout to hori for their joycon alternatives, 20 bucks cheaper and more comfortable and durable. The split pad pro is good, and a far cry better than joycons, but in my opinion, the split pad compact is just as comfortable whilst feeling more "premium" in the hands. (It also helps that it looks significantly less goofy than the pro) No rumble or wireless play, but if you wanted that why aren't you using a pro controller. As someone who use to play almost exclusively docked, I realize now that behavior was probably just because of how much joycons suck for most things. I play almost exclusively in handheld now. I urge anyone who is thinking about replacing a set of drifting joycons to give these a shot, sure they will need a special case, but you can buy a new case and the controllers themselves for about the same price as a set of joycons.

I was in the same situation as Micah and I also had a stand for the switch screen while i used the procon but the screen being small and far away was not enjoyable. The joycons would cause cramping and the pro controller is a better and more comfortable option. I bought the Fixture S1 and it work perfect for playing on the couch in a comfy position with the screen close to the face. The only problem is what Dustin hinted at with it being made of plastic. The hinge that is closest to the screen holder loosen up and could no longer hold up the weight. Fortunately the company sent a free replacement. Maybe I got a faulty one or the hinge could be better designed to be tighten. Would recommend to Dustin and Micah.
