Forspoken Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 300

Recently, I (Colin) sat down and did something unusual: I played through all of Forspoken. As you likely already know, Forspoken came out this past January as a PS5 console exclusive, and it didn't exactly light the world afire. In fact, it's thoroughly mediocre, a surprise considering the pedigree of both its publisher and developer. But that's kind of the point. Everything these days seems to be the best-of-all-time or the worst-thing-ever, with no in between. But it's in between that Forspoken very comfortably rests. It's a game for young adults -- specifically girls -- and games critics and the outspoken industry-types aren't exactly its core audience. I'm not either. But I wanted to give it a chance, and I have a lot to say about it. Coincidentally, so does Gene Park, who reviewed the game at The Washington Post and originally pitched me on the idea of sitting down to talk about it. So we did just that. Fun to play but trite in its delivery, Forspoken may just surprise you for reasons you've not yet considered.

"The difference between Control and Forspoken is that Control is awesome" LOL that one snuck up real quick.

I remember reading an article where someone at Luminous Productions said they were trying to make Forspoken the most graphically impressive and beautiful open world ever made. What happened? Definitely needed way more development time or better management

PRETENTIEUX

That's a bad goal from the very start unless you are catering to an audience of children or idiots, which they were. You can impress me for a maximum of about ten minutes, at which point I need to have found a game I actually like to play. This is why stuff like SCORN just fail so hard. Nobody really cares about your art if you aren't making a good game first.

it's true though, i mean just look at how lauded the Luminus tech demo was prior to this games announcement. honestly I just think that graphical polishing is some of the later things done, and they just ran outta budget to implement it.

Octopath Traveler 2, the best turn-based RPG since FFIX = mmm dropped it 30 hours in, too tedious Forspoken = getting the platinum, Spoilercast Colin my boy, you gotta wear that contrarian hat proudly!

Jimmy G

It’s not necessarily contrarian if you’re genuinely bored with a game and drop off. It happens. If you already think OT2 is great you should probably count your blessings there’s no spoilercast.

Jordan Falduto

It's contrarian to drop high quality good games and purposefully play low quality mediocre at best games. Matty would be on the spoilercast and it was (is?) his GOTY. Micah stuck with it longer than Colin so she would probably be on it too. Can't remember if Holly played it from their chat, but she has a much better taste in RPGs than any of the Sacred crew. Regardless, I'm just whining because I used to go to Colin for his JRPG takes but his taste in games has since taken a turn. It's okay though because he's brought in people whose takes I CAN relate to - hence the empire. When I was a KF listener, his taste was all I had.

The dedication for this video was real

There's been tonnes of fantastic turn based jrpgs since 1999. Octopath is decent but has issues with characters and tedium, same as the first one. Would still recommend them to fans of jrpgs tho.

I don’t know man, sometimes I get really into a game that I intellectually understand isn’t very good, but something about it captures my attention. Greedfall comes to mind…was spending 60 hours on that a good use of my time while I have a back catalog of AAA games that I know will be great? Probably not, but it’s my time, damnit. 😅 OT2 is my GOTY so far, so I’m not hating on your take at all.

Jordan Falduto

Agreed. And ultimately you or anyone should play exactly what they want without having to prove why! Love ya buddy.

Stinkling

His game taste these days is questionable for sure lol. Id go for a Dustin or Gene take first myself, Chris also seems to have fairly passable taste, if a bit mainstream and bland. Guess that's the beauty of LSM not being JUST Colin. You can align with someone else's tastes in games from the company and take their word on if somethings good or not, theirs a broad enough spectrum across the shows for everyone's tastes to be represented.

worlds first!! hahahah

Episode was great. Would love for colin and gene to reunite and do ffxv. A game i loved the first time. Got bored with in postgame and then just thought was ok in a second playthrough.

The best name on that list is Todd Bonzales.
