Welcome to another episode of Sacred Symbols x Defining Duke! Today, we dedicate some two-and-a-half hours to a detailed chronicling of our respective backlogs. Each of the five of us -- Colin, Dustin, Chris, Matty, and Cog -- selected five games that we really, truly, and even urgently feel we need to get to, and our choices span generations, consoles, publishers, and genres. Colin thinks he's a poser because he's never played System Shock 2. Dustin's love of Japan makes Yakuza an obvious target. Cog's eager to embrace nerdy robots in Armored Core. Matty wants to add the X-adjacent Mega Man Legends to his repository. And Chris is intrigued by the promise of something new in Disco Elysium, if only he could find the time and inclination. But that's only five games. We talk about 18 more in great detail. Please enjoy.

I found Mega Man Legends for PS1 at Goodwill two years ago for 1.00. It was with the music CDs. It was awesome.

Joshua Hutchens

The Final Fantasy talk is funny. 8 is my favorite, and i also really like 13. 8 has a very customizable experience with its scaling and card (gained from tripal triad) utilization. While 13 is perhaps the best ballanced game in the series. Final Fantasy truly is a series with a million diffrent opinions from a million diffrent people. Good episode chaps.

Asique Alam

We didn't know this planet was gay, we gotta get out of here. lmaoo had me dying.

Dillan Bhikha

Cheers guys . I prefer topics like this unlike the usual discussions like game pass

Andrew McGregor

I remember getting Suikoden 2 on the Vita after Jared Petty made an impassioned speech about it on Beyond with Colin and Greg. Enjoyed it, but fell of when something new came out. Been eyeing the upcoming remake, but think it seems a perfect SteamDeck game.

Tonys_Always_Write

I know it would be a lot to work out and manage, but would be great to see The Punching Up cast added into these conversations. Or maybe just have a quartlery meeting of all teams.

Rich Price

Outer Wilds isn’t for everybody, but people who do like it often rate it as top 5-10 ever. If it clicks with you it’s one of the most profound experiences in gaming.

Big Swingin' Rick

This was a fun episode, I'm surprised Lost Legacy didn't make it on to Colin's list

Context Should Matter

This was the best part of the episode. Colin: I need to get to Skyrim Cog and Matty: What!?!? *chatter* Chris: Hold up… He was on PS3. Cog and Matty: *in unison* “OOHHHHH”

Bobby Woods

Love hearing you all in one place. Great episode

PairOfShuse

Final Fantasy 8 is my second favorite Matty. I enjoyed the characters and the story. Battle system is not the best in the series but has some cool aspects to it

The Fred Durst Death Hoax

I played through Grim Fandango for the first time a year or so ago on Switch. Incredible game. I definitely got stuck on a couple puzzles, but the tone is one of a kind, definitely worth a try.

NeO JD

Was gonna comment exactly that. Epic moment. 😄

PRETENTIEUX

yeah I'd really like more fresh ideas for sacred symbols+ like this, even with just the regular CDC

PRETENTIEUX

Trying to solve puzzles in those style of games always has me just clicking like a cookie clicker at some point.

The Fred Durst Death Hoax

Getting a balloon from a clown, filling it with chemicals, and sending it through the office mail chute? Not my first idea, I'll admit.

Matthew Kessler

I’ve gotta say, Colin is the reason I’m such a huge Danganronpa fan after his IGN review all those years ago. So him not having V3 on his backlog list was a bit of a disappointment. That aside this was one of my very favorite episodes with some hilarious conversations.

2023-05-30 11:33:43 I know it’s not your thing but Half Life without M/KB is a sin. It’s like using a steering wheel for Metroid or something… Classic PC FPS of the late 90’s-mid late 2000’s feel completely different with a controller - the same goes for CRPG’s. (I typed this out before Chris said exactly the same thing)
2023-05-30 09:23:42 I’m another one waiting for a Chrono Trigger port to PlayStation. Dishonored and Half Life 2 have the same lead artist by the way. Which becomes quite apparent when you’ve played both. I know it’s not your thing but Half Life without M/KB is a sin. died at mogamon. copyright that asap.

It may be a fun challenge to see who in the company can clear the most off of their list of 5 by the end of the year. I haven’t finished the episode yet so something along those lines may come up. That all being said, I can understand that challenge conflicting with the ideology of the company letting everyone play whatever they feel like.

Zachary

I seriously cringe at hearing Chris talk about his gaming interests and opinions lol. Love the show!

Evan Erickson

My whole list would be JRPGS. FF Tactics, FF XII, Suikoden 2, Secret of Mana, and Xenoblade Chronicles. Aside from Secret of Mana, I think I will never get to these simply because of random battle encounters. I just can't take that mechanic anymore for 50-100 hours.

Jeremy Seal

Every Kojima fan HAS to play Snatcher. The production value, especially for the time, is unreal. I would firmly place in my top 10 all time games list.

Michael Ryan

Working through backlog of + episodes. If Colin doesn't say Astro Bot Rescue Mission 😭
