PlayStation All-Stars 2: Building Our Dream Roster | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 292

Wanna hear something wild? It's been more than a decade since PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale came to PS3 and Vita. Indeed, the name of the game wasn't considered particularly unusual then, but would be now, because it was no battle royale, but rather a Smash Bros.-like fighting game from now-defunct second party Sony partner SuperBot. While selling more than a million copies and finding a somewhat dedicated fanbase (at least for a short time), PSAS ultimately passed like a fart in the wind when future DLC plans were abandoned in 2013. Since then, PlayStation fans have been left wondering what a new crossover fighter could look like, particularly considering how immensely strong the brand has become in the console generations since. The conversation starts at the very top, though, with potential characters. We have literally 80 of them. We wonder if we missed any?

Ethan Mars was all I needed. BEYOND!

Xero

The Pepsi Man theme is the ring tone on my work phone. (I work for Pepsi's competitor)

Great, now I've watched episode one of the Chris Chan documentary, immediately after this episode. What have I got myself in for?!

iain mcmanus

how do you not say pyramid head from silent hill or jill valentine resident evil 1

Walker Simmons

Adding Sonichu would be pretty hype

I know that Jin is a guarantee but I definitely think Samanosuke from Onimusha is a solid pick! Also loved the GameFAQs character battles every year.

James Pies

Best part of that Donkey Kong show, it's got musical numbers.

No love for Delsin Rowe? Infamous second son was the best infamous game, fight me.

Jack Fining

Love this conversation, as a fan of PS All-Stars I spent a lot of time thinking about a sequel. Assuming it's the same kind of platform fighter as the original, I always envisioned that Shadow of the Colossus and Journey would be suited better to being represented with stages. Fighting on the back of the 5th colossus in the sky or in the dessert would be pretty neat. Also thanks, I started watching the Chris Chan documentary and it's actually enthralling.

For Killzone, I thought the Helghast soldier also could have been an easily recognisable character.

Sindri

I would've loved to have seen Death Jr get some respect in this

Christopher Heeley

No Kiryu from Yakuza, NO VIB-RIBBON?! NO LARA CROFT?!?! What kind of PlayStation show is this? I'd also consider; a Worm from the Worms series, Pyramid head from Silent Hill, Jehuty from Zone of the Enders, Tony Hawk, from THPS, Max Payne, 47 from Hitman. As for Tekken, Killzone and Resistance; Jin Kazama has been the face of Tekken for nearly two decades now so he should be the pick (maybe Devil Jin), Heihachi is dead and isn't even in the games anymore. A Helghast Trooper should be the Killzone pick (so iconic it's on every box art) and a maybe a Chimera trooper for Resistance.

Michael Thew

Kevin Butler, glad Dustin brought it up, and ODB from the Wu-Tang fighting game and a gravel pit stage

Christopher Heeley

There should be some kind of battle stage or SOMETHING where all the Playsation Racing games get their due. Gran Turismo, Ridge Racer, Motorstorm etc

Tonys_Always_Write

This was an awesome episode, and honestly kind of awkward when Colin was talking about Pixel Opus needing representation. Lol Jim and Herman disagree. ☹️

I love this topic! I didn’t know a third of the characters you guys mentioned but entertaining all the same. Though, one that was missing from the lists was Vexx! I don’t know how affiliated this game was with PlayStation. It was on GameCube, but I played it on PS2. So that’s my justification lol. #bringVexxback

Chris Morton

Imagine a Constellation episode with Colin, Chris, Dustin, and Geno

Sam Porter Bridges and Fetus

Jerison Reidell

Great episode with some really solid picks! I was a bit surprised no one said Lara Croft from Tomb Raider.

Anonymous

I came here to say the same but a bit more crude. Like triangle boobie Lara Croft.

How is there no Abby? Give her a shotgun and a golf club!

Robbie Cooper

Very good episode, loved the Tomba and Blasto picks. Two of my favorite games I still own and play sometimes. If I had to pick a few not mentioned on the episode it would be, Jersey Devil, Cubix (from Cubix racing), Laura Croft, and Tony hawk for fun.

Nathan Densley

Great idea. I think there should be another tier for stages/settings, that's where things like Wipeout/GT/Ridgeracer could fit. Things missed that I thought could be fun: Rocket League Destiny 2: Oryx or Savathun Atreus The Dwarf Brothers from GoW Resogun ship Super Stardust Squall from FF8 Something from VR like Moss or Job Simulator Pyramid Head Eve from Parasite Eve Lara Croft Dino Crisis, the raptor The Last Guardian birddog, but it is always delayed in entering the match The First Light DLC character (cool powers) MLB The Show (Ortis was first cover, roided and beating people with bats) Nioh Sekiro Tearaway Patapon army Tenchu (that spray of blood) Something Yakuza

Mel from Hot Shots Golf no doubt.

Sergio Pina

Unless I missed it, I’m really surprised Colin didn’t mention Sion from The Bouncer. Early launch window PS2 game from Square.

Miracle Peach

This was awesome. Loved it!! Thanks for the continued awesome content.

I think the crucial thing that killed the first game and that needs to be critically done for the second is an esthetic that binds all characters and locations together. The thing that makes Smash Bros shine is that you could envision those characters in a pixar-like animation movie together, and they wouldn't feel weird. Even the humanoid characters got a bit of a "cartoonization". The first All Stars game was so confusing because the characters retained their own style and esthetic. The development team needs to come up with a style that makes them work together. If they nail that - massive step into greatness.

So how did you guys miss....Shuhei "yosp" Yoshida ?! :O

What about the Vita goat himself Monokuma?

Publius_616

Love the Battle Arena Toshinden pull, Eiji was one of my favorites growing up. Only addition that comes to mind right now would be Kena!

Aaron

Super-fun episode! Digging the Toshinden and Jumping Flash love

Joshua Fielder

I would love Juan from Guacamelee. If not him than the severed girl, something to get drinkbox in there

Brent

No idea what the reference is to some guy y’all are going on about in Colin’s neighborhood or what not. I need answers.

Cormac

Might have missed it, but part 2 has to be the stages from games. Where are we fighting?

Jeremy Tan

I second this! Was surprised he wasn’t on anyone’s list, especially Colin
