Welcome to another edition of Sacred Symbols x Defining Duke! Colin, Chris, and Dustin welcome the Dukes -- Matty and Cog -- to the show for a rousing 2+ hour conversation on topics covering both PlayStation and Xbox. For starters, the boys discuss their last-minute thoughts on Redfall, now that it's on the precipice of release. Are people underestimating Arkane's vampire game? The crew also talks about PlayStation 5's strong performance at a time when we know less about the brand's future than we ever have before. How can we sync the two disparate realities of a console selling at a record pace while toting little more than a promise of continued high-quality output? Finally, we discuss what we perceive as the degradation of 'the conversation' surrounding our hobby, specifically on social media. How did some folks that clearly know so little about games, seldom play them, and get so much wrong about them find themselves in positions of power? It seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure at a time when our industry needs strong, sound, and knowledgeable voices more than ever. So: Let's lament.

My favorite cross-over content. Thanks for the episode

I love how everyone is bringing up all of these critical points about Redfall, including a few that seem insane (no progression if you aren’t the host?), and yet the score prediction is low to mid 80s? So the prediction of the game you all are going hard on is that it will review great? The point is review scores are so so dumb omg and we’ve got to collectively come to a consensus in describing and interpreting the quality of games in a different way.

My new “Gamescoop”. Wish these were weekly.

Arkane Lyon, the original team, made Deathloop. Arkane Austin, the team that made Prey, is making Redfall.

Lol I love how Colin is trying to kill the show like an hour in… *checks time left* 58 minutes. More content, awesome! 😎

Really enjoying these crossover episodes! PSA about the PSN name change. I changed mine the moment I could and never encountered any issues with my PS3 and Vita. Not a single one. I was actually shocked! Both consoles displayed the name correctly in the games and OS; I haven't seen my old name at all anywhere. None of my saves got corrupted and no trophy errors. Crazy Sony didn't screw that bit of software up. I have no idea why that warning exists when you change it, besides maybe legal mumbojumbo?

I have to confess that I still don't know what game mode does on my TV

I def don’t take your opinion as serious because you are obsessed with trophies. Playing games as a checklist rather than experiencing a piece of art. Play how you Want but you definitely aren’t who I go to for game advice. I want everyone to hide their trophies.

Josef Barker

When they talk about sport, specifically American sport I 100% tune out like Chris does.

Rich Price

Why on Earth would you want that?! Just don’t look at them. Personally I think it’s good to see that a reviewer who criticises a games ending has actually completed it, for example.

If you payed ANY attention you'd know that Colin ignores going after Platinum's for the MAJORITY of games he plays. He only goes that far for games he loves or is interested in the challenge. What he *actually* likes is having trophies for all his games as a way of keeping TRACK of what he's played as sort of a "museum" if you will. Pretty sure he's explained this a decent amount of times prior.

easelgames

Ironic when you consider Chris was just IN a sport, something nobody else on the panel AFAIK has done in a *long* time. (boxing is a sport even in CC standpoint, still had to put the time/effort in)

Ryan

Because trophies are antithetical to what I think is meaningful in experiencing art. I haven’t looked at a trophy once and make sure they are turned off. The fact that they change conversations around games is obnoxious. They are so meaningless to me

Ryan

He doesn’t play games on other platforms because of trophies. He actually makes a note of it when he’s playing something and not worrying about trophies. I prefer to play games like you would before achievements and trophies. He just mentioned that quit dishonored because of trophy shit. He can play how he wants but I do think it makes him less credible in alignment with what I want to experience and care about.

While Sony could secure debt financing for an LBO of a major 3rd party publisher, I don’t think it would be a favorable decision in a high-interest rate environment. Unlike private equity buyers, strategic buyers typically prefer all-cash transactions to avoid major changes in capital structure that could lead to a downgrade in credit ratings. I think Sony would be wise to avoid large acquisitions. There’s research from McKinsey and academics that shows that large acquisitions add below-average value to acquiring firms. Most of the value creation passes through to shareholders of the acquired firm. In contrast, smaller bolt-on acquisitions, similar to those Sony has made in the past, add more value to acquiring firms. As always, great crossover episode gents!

Another solid get together although the timing on the latter half…😅

Something called user scores being affected by users is the point. Don’t like it, get rid of it entirely. As for the physical game debate, listen to Dustin. $89 for a new game in Canada or I can buy it on Facebook marketplace from a kid who beat it in a weekend for $65. I get why you hate that idea, but for a consumer it’s the still best path

Greg Hommel

It is absolutely true that on the vast majority not TV’s, “Game Mode” is merely a color setting. On higher end, modern 4k TV’s, Game Mode has a deeper processing effect. Well, actually it limits other processing effects that could cause latency in the refresh rate.

For me, the necessity of 60+ fps does kinda vary from game to game. More cinematic games that dont require precise input can get away with locked 30fps. It's like how IMAX is rendered at 24fps. It gives it an otherworldly quality that makes you feel like you're more of a passive observer of what is happening on screen than an active participant. Games that are meant to read more like movies always seem kinda weird when they're rendered above 60 fps. The inherent jitters of synthetic computer character motions are more pronounced whereas those same movements are smoothed out in a lower fps mode. With that said, bring on the 144 fps for the competitive games!

Colin changing his username prompted me to actually check out his trophies on PSNProfiles, and I'm impressed. I already knew he had way more platinums than I had (139 vs 86), but also he has 13 platinums under 10% achievement compared to the 5 I have. About the only thing I have is more Ultra-rare trophies (5% and below,) and 1 platinum that is under 2% completion (Hotshots Golf World Invitational.) He has me beat on pretty much every other metric. He really does bring in the trophies.
