Don’t Break the Branches off the Family Tree | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast, Episode 252

Naughty Dog and Insomniac are the two studios often looked at as the bulwarks of PlayStation's first party family. But it's clear that -- over in Europe -- a third team is quickly climbing the depth chart: Guerrilla. In recent days, the team revealed a complete shakeup of their executive staff, and for the second time in just a few years, they're losing their leader to PlayStation proper. In other words, many compliments are being paid to a studio not only working on Horizon 3, but a Horizon multiplayer game as well, in addition to shepherding the increasingly-important Decima engine. What's the future look like for Sony with Guerrilla in increasing control? We've much to chat about. Plus: The CMA surprisingly blocks Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, a new Sony patent seemingly confirms a detachable PS5 disc drive is en route, Burning Shores' review bombing convinces Metacritic to clean up their site, and more. Then: Nearly three years out, what are our thoughts on Ghost of Tsushima? Are we ever tempted to try Final Fantasy XIV? How come Colin loves sports so much, but hates competitive gaming? Will Chris' and Colin's portraits hang in an Ohio deli like two communist dictators? How is 79 years old “not very old” lol rip jerry

So on the CMA deal its worth seeing this document from the 400 page report they published this will have been a big part of sony's not accepting the 10 year deal and the cma ultimately blocking the deal. https://twitter.com/charlieINTEL/status/1651750074525921280?cxt=HHwWgMC9naD8mOwtAAAA

That post dustin made on twitter with Jim legit had me crying hahaha, been looking forward to this!!!

Meta Critic should just eliminate user reviews and user scores completely because there's no way to validate that people actually completed the game.

To Dustin's point regarding physical game sales - I've recently shifted to digital since I work full-time and can afford to do so now. But it wasn't so long ago that I literally could not afford to pick up every new game that I wanted to play. It was essential for me to buy physical, and then either trade or sell the games when I was done using Kijiji or Marketplace. If you make decent money and this isn't an issue for you, it becomes easy to forget that the vast majority of people in the gaming community are in fairly dire straits financially. I really hope physical doesn't get edged out entirely, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened ~5 years from now.

Gay men have kind of taken a back seat in media over the past few years. My brother, who is gay, is annoyed that like 90% of gay representation is lesbian and trans characters. I don't know if its more palatable to have gay women or what but it really is weird. Bring on the gay men!

BryanK75

Did someone say 'Oil-man'?

Julian LP

Lol yeah it's literally above the average life expectancy for males in America.

Dylan Michael

I feel so bad for Dustin whenever the physical games conversation comes up. You can see it in his face lol

Michael Thew

Hey Chris, another heads up with the esper system. Most but not all espers give you a stat boost on lvl up. I don’t think it’s a spoiler but Bismarck, the first batch you get, it’ll be at the bottom of the esper and it’ll say 10% hp. Think of the min max possibilities lol!! But I wouldn’t worry, if a 13 year old could beat it, you can. Just level the crap out of your guys, that’s plenty enough to beat it. Btw don’t be a purist, your doing a disservice not using a guide. I used the shit out of my strat guide. It was full of beautiful artwork. Great episode guys, take it easy

MGS3 is my favorite of the series - and one of my favorite games ever tbh - but I'm saying that having not played it since it came out. I just have really fond memories of my time with it back then and the story was just fantastic (I mean it's basically a Metal Gear Bond movie, theme song and all), but I totally get some of the criticisms of gameplay quirks like the cure mechanic. Didn't bother me at all back then but I'd imagine that would be a bit different if I played through now. But I just love the whole story, the world you play in and the characters you come across. My fight with The End still ranks as one of my most memorable boss fights in games - though I know that won't be the case for everyone with the various ways that can play out. If this rumoured remake is real and they tweak a few of these things while keeping the bones of the game intact, I really feel like that could be a very special remake. Perfect example of a classic game which can be improved on for a modern audience

Pyo

For Colin, keep this in mind. In some places like were I live, physical is WAAAAAAAAAY cheaper. Usually the ranges of 15-25 euros per game at launch and only cheaper physical as times goes on. Like Horizon forbidden west was down to 20 euros here, not even close of that price digital ever

Joshua Brown

The appeal of funko pops to some people is just to have a piece of merch for something you like that doesn’t typically produce a lot of merch. They also don’t take up as much space as a high quality statue.

Deemac

Tbh I'm also in a position nowadays where I can afford to buy digital all the time - but there are those situations where I'm intrigued by a game and want to give it a go, but just can't justify paying full time whack on the digital store if I'm unsure of what the game will be like to play, or if it's worth it to me. It's more the principle of it for me tbh. I'll get it physical for cheaper and it feels more flexible to me in those situations. I've ended up getting some games I've ended up actually really enjoying that way, which I probably wouldn't have if that avenue wasn't open to me(Guardians of the Galaxy for example) Sometimes I could pick up a decent (but not great) game for like €10-15 cheaper than what it is on PSN, have a fine 8-10 hours or so with it, then either give it to a friend or even occasionally move it on to a used game store for like €20 less than what I paid. It's not that I'm scraping for the money, but it works out more like what it's worth to me, if that makes sense. I always buy digital on games which I'm almost certain I'll enjoy, or if I've so much trust in the developer that I've zero issue with paying the full amount and repaying the trust and supporting them( eg this year: Dead Spade, RE4, Spiderman 2 coming up. Pretty much any FromSoft game, Naughty Dog etc) Having said all that, it is very rare these days that I buy physical tbh. As life naturally happens, I don't have as much time to game these days, so when I do I spend it on the handful of top games I know I'll enjoy - that I buy on digital. I guess I just like the fact that physical is an option.

Jeremy Seal

Yes. I often see physical at least 30-50% cheaper than digital. Oftentimes even more than that. Additionally, Gamestop has all kind of deals on physical games.

RU46N2 (REY)

Wheatgrass is what you guys were looking the name for you can grow it inside your home as well and it goes great in shakes and help a lot.

Cun

We'll put, man! I relate to this absolutely.

Kyle-San

I’m confused about you all not having reported on the Shuhei Yoshida statements that came out about a week ago. I’m also disappointed that this week’s news didn’t dig deeper into the structure and inner-workings of PlayStation based on the news that came out. Can I expect a SS+ to do this? It would make a very interesting show based on the questions I had previously submitted.

Michael Kurzer

I get where Dustin is coming from re: the physical games discussion. But personally, I am part of the group who collects physical games for purposes of preservation/access to the games later. I'd certainly be curious to have current data on the percentage of physical games that get traded in. I feel like that number is probably not that high, but I'm also coming to that conclusion via my own biases so who knows. When I see people say "physical is cheaper," i dont really tend to agree since digital games get DEEP sales during holidays/special events too. But maybe physical gets cheaper faster. What i DO know is that for ME, I do not purchase physical games that do not ship with at least a 1.0 playable version in the package.

Michael Kurzer

I get what he's saying. I personally just think it's more common that people buying physical media in 2023 (like me) are doing so for collecting purposes. These "mandatory download" physical versions are an instant NO from me. That said, I have no way to prove the "physical media for future proofing" crowd is any larger than the "physical media for lending/selling back" crowd so I could easily be wrong.

Caleb Peacock

The guy who went to the deli…you get Kroger meats? The fact you have a Kroger means you have a Publix…who uses boarshead for their subs. What are people even doing out here dude. Blindly going through life with the worst possible meat choices. You live around Publix and you’ve never had a pubsub?

Surge!

Oh we just a couple oil barrens, and we're a howling to give you something good.

Keith Huntington

personally, i just mow the lawn and leave the clippings where they fall. from dust to dust... or some such. 😄

Keith Huntington

tsushima is easily my goty for 2020. an absolute masterpiece, heads and shoulders above anything else. 👍👍👍

Richard Court

Breaking ones collarbone is awful.. someone broke mine for me at school one day.. they put that little circular pad with straps to pull your shoulders back to line up the bone and hope for the best.. worst thing i had was startling myself awake out of a dream .. right into excruciating pain.. i always said that was the worst pain of my life.. but ones gall bladder flaring up before rupture beat it..

Cun

He's vaguely... he's vaguely something!

superbadisfunny .

Thank you Colin for talking about the spoiler in horizon dlc. It was refreshing to hear spoiler talk when it can add to the conversation instead of always avoiding it. A pre spoiler warning and a time skip is all that's ever needed. Keep up the fantastic work as always

Anonymous

Not true at all. Publix is Southeast US only. Kroger has a strong presence in many parts of the country. Central Ohio for example. Source: I’ve worked at both companies

Gavvyn

CDC, VERY IMPORTANT. Please don’t leave grass clippings on a road/pavement. It makes it very slippery and dangerous especially for motorcyclists. This should be a PSA for next episode.

2023-05-04 01:09:43 Microsoft did not aproach ABK, it was the other way around so how could it be desperate? A company like Microsoft gets the chance to take ABK they're going to. They went to Facebook first btw. Chris nailed ABK on the head. It clearly makes no sense. The reason why everyones been wrong is because no legal analyst saw a real problem with it and we're seeing regulators move on politics and not law. The CMA is counting every Gamepass subscriber as a cloud user....... that is idiotic. Did they count every Netflix sub as a cloud user? I guarantee you 80% have never used it once and if they did it's very rare. I don't think there was one person who looked at the deal and thought the cloud needed to be protected lol. It's honestly unbelievable tbh. I don't really care about ABK as a Gamepass sub because I don't play there games anyway but I really want this over with. It's just annoying at this point.
