Desperate Measures | Sacred Symbols, Episode 243

Xbox's pursuit of Activision Blizzard reached a new crescendo in recent days, as Microsoft President Brad Smith gave both private and public presentations to the European Commission about the virtues of the proposed deal. In its persistent recalcitrance and total unwillingness to get out of the way (particularly when it comes to Call of Duty's availability on PlayStation), Sony's strategy of silence may actually be paying off. Is Cryin' Jim really Thrivin' Jim? As always, we go deep into the weeds of this never-ending saga. Other news this week includes word of Diablo IV's open beta, Bungie suing cheaters into oblivion, and Embracer's presumably overleveraged position. Listener inquiries round things out, touching on topics like games that solve puzzles for you, our favorite so-called Sony-isms, the upcoming biblical title I Am Jesus Christ, and a potential Sacred Symbols sandwich at an Ohio-based deli. (Remember: We recorded a day earlier than usual because of our live event in Houston.) MERCH: https://laststandmedia.store Follow the hosts on Twitter! It should really be “the sacred sub” for the sandwhich.

Am I the only one who thinks the obvious name choice for the sandwich is simply "The Sacred Sandwich"?

Super Stardust Portable is available to purchase without a subscription! They changed that a few weeks ago

Some of these game studios are under so many umbrellas they're practically Rihanna

About 15 hours into Atomic Heart, and personally I think it’s fucking rad. I won’t lie, sometimes when I see reviews I subconsciously let them paint my experience at first because I’m kind of keeping an eye out for what I’ve heard is bad, and in Atomic Heart’s case, I’m having an absolute blast. There’s definitely some eye-rolling dialogue from the protagonist, but other than that it’s a really cool setting, the abilities/combat/weapons are really fun, and the game has some of the best puzzles and dungeons I’ve played in a FPS. It feels like a mix of Bioshock, Prey, and Fallout/Far Cry open world.

One tiny "Sony-ism" I enjoy are the little easter eggs and nods to other first party franchises and teams or cameo appearances. I always love to see that.

The onslaught against Microsoft here is probably more severe than anything we’d ever hear from Sony PR. From listening to this, it’s like thinking George Bush is as he appears in the “W” movie, but I’m keen to to remember Microsoft is one of the top 3 biggest companies in the world and is no dummy. They’re not exactly eating glue with a spork, they have a strategy and they’re not getting outmaneuvered horrifically, at least not yet. I think it’s fine to be critical but this analysis was extremely tone deaf in my view. Looking forward to hear a more nuanced discussion with the Dukes!

I love that people who brought The Legend of Dragoon on PS3 can pick it up for free. Unfortunately, Sony botched the PS5 port. If you use a spell in Dragoon form, the game soft locks, leaving you in combat until you reset the game or rewind before you use the spell. I was looking forward to getting the platinum, but I won't be playing this until this is fixed.

Hey Colin, when saying you have to deactivate two factor authentication to use Vita, this is not the case (at least for me). I have two factor authentication on and am able to use the PS Vita as well as the PS3 just fine. You have to generate one of their “device setup password’s” when you are on PlayStation’s website. Once you generate the device code, when you go to sign in on Vita, your password is the device code you generated. If you have multiple Vita’s or PS3’s you have to generate a different code for each device. It can be a pain but once you do it once, you don’t have to worry about it again. Sorry if people have told you this before but this works for me at least. If you already knew about this but it doesn’t work for you for some reason, sorry to waste your time. Have a great live show! Can’t wait to hear everybody’s case for the most overrated game of all time! :D

One anecdote guys just so you’re aware. MSFT left Nintendo and PC out of their presentations because the FTC, CMA, and EU have created their own markets for the consoles which they regard as “high performance” consoles. The regulators themselves cut out Nintendo and so MSFT presented their stats based on that reality. PC is not included because the regulators worries are competition in console and the cloud space. PC is not considered a console. Hope this adds any missing clarity.

Super Stardust Portable must've had some weird launch error, as you couldn't even access the PS4 version at first, but since then it's been purchasable. The only classic games you can't purchase AFAIK are Tekken 2, Resident Evil: Director's Cut, Mr. Driller, and Ridge Racer 2, and presumably future Capcom and Bandai Namco games, but even the different 3rd party games on the service can be purchased ala carte.

I feel bad for the Xbox fans that buy physical games & don’t want GamePass.

Joe

When Sony does it, it’s “smart.” When Microsoft does it, it’s “desperate.” Lol.

Kenneth Oms

I really want Xbox to pull a win and get their shit together. But I don’t think you guys said anything wrong. Xbox leadership has failed us. Where the fuck is everwild? Perfect dark etc. we went an entire console generation without a new fable. I want them to be successful I really do, but the leadership needs to take a shot of energy boost in the ass and get moving. Xbox one made me stop gaming on console, and it was the first few episodes of SS when it was just you and Chris that made me go buy a ps4 and see what I was missing on Sony since the ps2.

Tony Rivera

The Sacred Sub.. Subtle but still a nod to the legacy.

Hey Colin the part of the open world that is closed off is actually not closed off if it was the same issue I had. For me, I couldn't get to the south part of the map, but if you ping the floo flames you can actually get there if you get off your broom and follow the gps to run through the tunnel. You don't even have to fight anyone if you don't want to, but it's annoying that you can't get there on your broom. Also the spell you need for the cubes is flippendo. I also had an issue with those. Very annoying. But luckily you don't have to complete anywhere near all of them. I just did enough for the upgrade and promptly told the Merlin challenges to fuck right off lol

How about these for Sandwich ideas? "The Last Standwich." "Keep Fucking that Pepper Turkey"

Colin and Dustin, you guys have to see this clip of Chris doing his Joe Biden impression https://youtube.com/clip/Ugkx_G6InnMT_A9wYMD6-87DI5svsFMxReLu And Colin of course your mum knows how trophies work, her son has a debilitating addiction to them lol

There is no wrong way to play a game

In Hogwarts Legacy, the bottom half of the map isn’t actually locked off, you just can’t fly to it. At the bottom of South Sea Bog, there’s a bandit camp next to a mine that you can visit anytime, and you just need to travel through the mine as the exit leads to the rest of the map. I just ignored the enemies and ran straight through. I’m assuming a quest will naturally take you to it later in the story, but the rest of the map is available now if you wanted to go there.

Dave Carsley

Kinda bummed that Chris is gone again. Yes, I get that he has other things going on in life, but then again, so do I; I still have to go to work every day. You either commit or you don't. It's definitely to the point where when I start the podcast each week, my first thought is, "Is Chris missing again?"

Wesali1996

Loving Hogwarts but there are a lot of things wrong with the game mostly being nitpicks. The mouse cursor type menus are infuriating to me, it would be faster to get around with the D-pad and after 30 hours i'm really sick of the menus.

Colin, in Hogwarts, the 2nd half of the map isn't cut off to you! You just have to find the tunnel! You can get there asap (and then proceed to sigh as you learn how many more merlin trials are over there haha)

RU46N2 (REY)

How come no one is talking about the alcoholic janitor that teaching you to pick locks in the middle of the night for his benefit? Hahaha love the game it's awesome and fun.

i know different strokes are for different folks, but how colin was able to a) see the credits to returnal, much less b) get the platinum, (where returnal is objectively for me the hardest game i have ever played in my entire life), but was only able to hang with elden ring for 20 hours is quite remarkable. returnal dwarfs elden ring in every metric imaginable when it comes to pure difficulty and challenge. i would highly recommend jumping back into elden ring with the mindset of "if i can beat the third boss of returnal, i can obliterate everything in elden ring" cause that boss was.... my god i have ptsd flashbacks to playing that boss 😂 and what's humorous in hindsight is i didn't figure out how to do the shortcut to the citadel until i already beat the game and went back in for the secret ending, so every time i died to the boss i went to the desert, then to the citadel shortcut from the desert. i wanted to kick my ps5 to mars.

re: xbox one thing i find wild is, for me anyway, it was the og xbox that literally got me back into gaming. i dropped off for the 5th gen entirely. in 2001 when sony was mostly weird japanese games with purple haired spikey protagonists, and nintendo was nintendo, microsoft offered a true alternative in gaming. exclusive titles like fable. project gotham. blinx. halo. bloodwake. jet set radio. jade empire. morrowind. kotor. amped. advent rising. hunter the reckoning. etc etc. the exclusive titles and the identity with the og xbox was so definable. it was great to fly the flag of xbox on 2003, cause you felt like you were apart of a secret society. when all my friends were balls dee in playstation, i was the one they came over to for halo and dead or alive. how they went from over 150 diverse exclusive titles, to just being the halo/gears/forza box in 2018 is just sad. they don't need to buy studios or ip. they need to bring back the ip they have, and start working on new ideas like what they were doing 20 years ago. truly cutting edge and original games that no one else is doing.

For RareBiscuit who wrote in about turn based card games, I highly recommend that you check out Inscryption. I have never been into card games before, but after playing Inscryption and having an absolutely amazing time with it, I am interested to check out other card based games like Slay The Spire. Inscription = HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Unfortunate hearing about the current state of Atomic Heart, I've been anticipating that game for a while, but will be waiting for some trophy support/bug fixes. I don't feel like trophies dominate whether or not I play a game, but if they're going to not show up and bother me there are so many other games to play

Putting money on the account is pretty easy for PS3/Vita. I usually just go to the store and buy a PSN card, and login to the website to redeem it, or you can transfer money from Paypal from the website. You can actually hook to PS3 and Vita on PSN even with two factor authentication, but you have to get a password specific to the device from the PSN website. That said, I do turn off the "require password" for purchases before buying things on the Vita, because it's a hassle to type the password in again. I turn it right back on after buying what I wanted on the Vita.
