Is Xbox Game Pass Killing Games?! | Defining Duke Episode 111

Much as been said about gaming's most popular subscription service. While many have detracted its boons to the game development scene, Game Pass has stormed on to surpassed 25 million subscribers. At the same time, it seems Xbox has been caught talking about both sides of their mouth. In an admission to the CMA, Microsoft has stated that game sales do fall off across 12 months titles in Game Pass. While some see this as a mark of defeat, it only seems to highlight the lack of knowledge many of us have on the funding process. The Dukes dive deep into this one as we check our previous claims about the service, where it stands now, and if the sky is truly falling for Game Pass. Otherwise, we have a possible Evil Within 3 tease, Xbox climbing their personal rankings in Japan, and "Robert" may be here to stay if the Activision deal falls through. Isn't that the point? You get a large upfront payment (with bonuses and kickers if goals are hit) in exchange for actual sales. Sales is number that people are sticking to because it's all they knew for 40 years. Gamepass is an option that has worked for countless large and small devs. We get devs praising how much Gamepass helped them all the time. Those articles never go viral though.

we really need a third co host to break up the yes men bubble..

Parker Petrov

That was my thinking as well. The developers/companies who are placing games into the service are compensated. so the amount of sales is also lower that a game needs. So if a game needs to sell 5 million units. If its gamepass and Microsoft is covering development costs or paying per download or whatever was negotiated as how the dev wanted to be compensated. The total cost needed to be profitable is lower. So just going by strictly sales isn't a fair metric.

We know of people being arrested for speaking against the war. Whatever you think about the game or studio I would never want someone to be arrested so I feel ok to buy a game.

Dustin Johnson

It is, if it essentially means that you cannot be successful on an Xbox platform because people refuse to pay for games. And the only way to make any money is to hope Microsoft is willing to pay you and let you join game pass. Since everyone just now waits till it’s on game pass to play.

Which one of the three hosts on Sacred Symbols is the one who breaks the "yes men" bubble? Granted, I don't know exactly what you are referring to. But I'll just say that the point of having two separately focused podcasts underneath one umbrella, places the onus on us as the audience to listen to both points of view, and decide on your own view of what balance is. Apologies, if I read your comment incorrectly.

Jamie Anderson

Dustin and chris are always calling colin and each other out.. Matty or cog say anything and all you hear is mhmmm and yeh i agree.. ACG was a good balance for matty in this regard. A dustin or Chris would help break up it up..

Concerning the Sea of Stars issue, i'd like to bring up "Little Devil Inside" as a reason for valid concern. Little devil inside was another kickstarted game that had promise of being released on xbox but has now been relegated to "timed exclusive with no say on when it can be released on other platforms" and the refusal to issue refunds to those backers who backed it for an xbox release. The kickstarter page is still up and open and the comments section is still active with people trying to get refunds from it. This was announced in 2020 again, mind you. Not saying Sea of Stars will follow this same thing, but it's not the first time this scenario has happened.

The Netflix comparison doesn’t help, considering they are kinda going down at the moment. There’s a great video with Chris Stuckman (who knows way more about the film industry than I do) and he makes a very compelling argument for why Netflix did killed risk-taking in the industry , by removing another revenue branch for the filmmakers and producers

I think it’s the opposite for gaming. Just look at the games that come from Sony, they have their differences but still feel very similar while games that come from Xbox first party and games that are third party on game pass feel different from each other.

mundfish seems to be located in cyprus. i dont know much beyond that but it doesnt seem, at least on the surface that theyre based in russia. feel free to correct me anybody!

They moved there when the conflict began so they could get their game released and get around the embargo’s most countries placed on any product or service created in Russia.

Just got through the intro, really wishing you the best with the health situation Matty. As a native Houstonian your presence will be missed but taking care of yourself is top priority!
