The Wizard Who Won | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 241

The brand-new Harry Potter adventure Hogwarts Legacy will very easily go down as one of 2023's best-sellers, a testament to its high quality and faithful treatment of the so-called Wizarding World. But its success is also a triumph for reason and truth, and a major defeat for the outrage machine that tried to destroy it via a distorted game of telephone. Nestled within the maelstrom is nonetheless a heck of a game, and we're eager to talk about Avalanche Software's release in-depth. Plus: BioWare's continuing troubles, PixelJunk's triumphant return to PlayStation, and much more news. Then: Listener inquiries! Should we be more mindful of old game spoilers to help the younger generations 'go in fresh'? Was the Nier: Automata Platinum Trophy a step too far? Did Take Two announce Ken Levine's Judas too early? Will Colin ever recover from the precipitous decline in almond volume in his Honey Bunches of Oats... With Almonds? The dictionary-response people that look at Twitter all day have no power. Really can’t wait till more people realize this.

Ah another episode of SacBols 😊

Hate the boycott and all of the harrassment being given to those who play but I will say, it seems pretty cut and dry as to why people are upset with JKR and what she did: She began campaigning for the erasure of trans women all under the guise of being a good feminist. Specifically, it started with that essay/op-ed she wrote. I get not everybody will explain the situation that succinctly but that is essentially the core of the issue. What do people's disdain with JKR have to do with spoiling the game for random people? No clue EDIT:Listened a bit further and I think the reason Colin sees the backlash as unjustified is because he agrees with her "women should be treated as women" which aligns with her core message of "trans women aren't women".

Great episode. I do personally wish we didn’t have to talk about JK Rowling though. On a personal level I really couldn’t care less about the drama and just want to hear people talk about the game.

Cancel culture works because companies are beholden to shareholders and ultimately the bottom line, therefore are susceptible to the mob and will fire someone to make a "controversy" go away (even though it doesn't). All Hogwarts has proven is, it doesn't work when youre counting on millions of people to buy into your hysteria and doctrine. Gaming maybe the last bastion. Also I believe people come to gaming to escape the insanity and are more likely to fight for thier panacea.

Colin did call the sales on the Microsoft platform so long ago, by far the first person I heard show proof of the hurting sales I heard talk about it

Playing Hogwarts Legacy now. It’s great. I’m wondering if a sequel could be set at a different school, other than Hogwarts. But given all the buzz, this is sure to get a sequel, I’d expect.

While I think your band analogy is spot on. The Breaking Benjamin example just doesn't make sense. Benjamin Burnly IS Breaking Benjamin. He writes and sings everything (obviously with some cowriters). Who cares if the other members rotate in and out. It is like saying you don't like Elvis any longer because his bass player left. Bands like Sublime, Alice In Chains....where key members left make way more sense.

I'm baffled Level-5, who announced 3 different games at the direct, didn't get a mention; isn't Decapolice like the first western PlayStation game from them since Ni No Kuni II?

LastStandMedia

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the premise. The first two Breaking Benjamin records have a very distinct sound and feel, and they are still by far the best in the discography.

Ryan Zimm

As a massive fan of the band, and having read/watched more than a few interviews....you cam chalk that up to Benjamin changing as a musician/writer, as well as different production techniques. I mean, many bands that never changed members have a drastically different sound from early albums to later albums (Beatles for example) Obviously you don't need to like their newer music....but it is still the same band.

Heather Edwards

Colin, the handling of the JK Rowling topic is one of the biggest reasons I support this channel and all of you in Last Stand Media. You use reasoning rather than emotion, and where you fall on an issue is less important than how you get there in my opinion. I happen to 100% agree with you here, but even if I didn’t, I greatly appreciate the thoughtfulness behind the topics you discuss. Thank you.

All the other games people I follow have been so disappointing on this topic. Colin actually thinks for himself and it's refreshing.

Evan Frankfort

I love Dustin's point on the current, "state of activism." So true.

Nikitas Gagas

I'll third this. Colin and company are keeping it real here. CLS truly feels like a retreat from the myriad of crazy ideologies that have gradually seeped into and rotted our community. Kind of like an island of misfit gamers.

Hose A Contra Razz

I understand about spoilers, imagine being in history class in elementary and learning about the revolution war, civil war, war world and they spoil it right away. Wouldn’t I be cool to find out at the end.

I'm with you Colin on the Honey Bunches and Almond brand. As Larry David would say, "The whole almond-bunches balance is askew!"

Hearing how good Dead Space 1 is makes me hype for the potential Dead Space 2 remake that I hope they do next. 2 is my fav

LastStandMedia

I hope they just go in a different direction, or just use Dead Space 2 as the starting point. They shouldn't feel the need to make another closely-aligned remake.

superbadisfunny .

I'm mostly with you. Dead space 2 could be the new launch of the series that it desperately needs after its tarnished Ds3. I only played ds3 for 2 hours and deleted it.

99% of the planet agrees with the idea that biological women are not exactly the same as trans women. This protest never had the backing to succeed.
