The Last of Us (HBO) Review Discussion and Spoilercast (S1, E4) | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 266

The fourth episode of HBO's rendition of The Last of Us is a little slower and frankly less notable than what preceded it. But that doesn't mean it isn't great television in its own right. By leaving a coastal, occupied city and entering the barren interior of the United States, Joel and Ellie open themselves up to an entirely new brand of fundamental danger: Other survivors. The so-called Infected are the least of their worries. This episode also allows the pair to explore their increasingly fond friendship, and introduces a couple of vital characters from the game as well. Dagan and Micah join me (Colin) to chat in great detail about Please Hold to My Hand, which brings our protagonists to western Missouri, where things are both entirely different and very much the same as in dystopian Boston.

Keep up the awesome work guys! Loving these

Just finished Knockback five minutes ago with Dagan's dad joke, and then hopped right into Micah's "moma joke", its going to be a good day.

Juan Paolini

I was surprised not to see any mention of the bearded lieutenant accompanying Kathleen, the actor who plays Tommy in the games. Shout out to Jeffrey Pierce! (Apologies if it was mentioned and I missed it)

Samuel Mills

I resent Dagan referring to my city as second rate. Only jesting of course. It was cool for me to see my city pop up in a big name show. Even if it wasn't really filmed there.

Devlin England

Kathleen 🤣 The fuck is this?

Jared Ketner

Kathleen is woefully miscast. She seems like a frumpy school teacher who couldn't control a classroom of toddlers let alone a rebellion that took out Fedra. If she has anything to do with what happens to Sam and Henry it will be an agonizing misstep for this adaptation.

I think they chose Kansas city as opposed to Pittsburgh because Pittsburgh has a very unique set up that may be hard or too expensive to replicate. You think about 3 rivers coming into the city, multiple bridges, and the crazy topography of the land overlooking the city. If they did it just slightly wrong it would be so obvious.

Really enjoying the inclusion of Micah on these episodes. She's got the podcasting chops for sure.

I loved the leader as you can tell she is the type an actual community would look to . Probably a local councillor runs pta and would normal be the one who would get things fixed. When in a lot of the show when they follow psychos I’am usually wondering why are you following that complete nutter.

Chris Suhre

This show and podcast have become integral parts of my weekly routine and I appreciate the great content, thanks!

Couldn't agree more with the notion that people need to check themselves on their gut reactions to subject matter they're not innately comfortable with. You were all very well spoken on this point.

Hogan53

Except she is a complete nutter, totally unhinged in her search for Henry. Joel and Ellie are mercenaries Henry called in from outside, like ummm huh? Ignoring the coming zombie underground threat, like locking the door will fix it? Oh and who can ignore killing the Dr? First off it’s a big city, how would he know where Henry is really? And because a doctor couldn’t heal one person she decides to shoot him? Maybe you need doctors for other reasons? I have to disagree with the team, not a great character, but I’m sure she will meet a gruesome death in episode 5 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Dagan is the absolute goat, but hearing him say he loves Arby’s broke a small piece of my heart 😂.

I grew up in the Philly burbs and can confirm that Jawn has been around since at least the 90s. We definitely said it in high school. I’m 42.

Regarding Colin’s comment about homophobia surrounding episode 3. I knew Frank and Bill were gay and I don’t care however, the bedroom scene in the show was just really unnecessary and uncomfortable to watch.

RU46N2 (REY)

Kathlean you know her real name is Karen.

Nemesis Enforcer

Jawn was absolutely used in the 90s as a Philly native. It's played out now.

Nemesis Enforcer

Biggest issue with the show is it really toned the violence down to almost pg level.

Just finished another run on Last of Us Part 1 Remake and while watching the credits there was a statement dedicated to Bruce Straley thanking him for his efforts to Naughty Dog. I bring this up because of the lack of credit he received for the show. I believe that's due to the TV industries rigorous union and crediting system. It leads me to believe they would've gave him some sort of shout out if they were allowed to.
