God of Dollars | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 240

In only about 10 weeks on the market, God of War: Ragnarok has grossed (give or take) around $750 million. At 11 million units sold and counting, it's a stark reminder that -- yes indeed! -- people will buy games, buy them at a high price point, and buy them in great quantities. All that's necessary is for that product to be special. Having already made back Ragnarok's development and marketing costs several times, what's next for Santa Monica Studio? Behold yet another Sony money printer! Plus: PlayStation 5 sales are very strong, a sequel to an older PlayStation game is quietly (but blatantly) revealed, PSVR2's strengths and weaknesses are called into question weeks before launch, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! How do we feel about James Gunn's attempts to tie DC games into their larger entertainment universe? Will changes to Resident Evil 4 ruin the remake? Does Amy Hennig get too much credit for Uncharted? Can we learn to embrace the power of the badger? Goddamn, those thumbnail making skills are GOD tier !!

Dead Space Remake might be the best survival horror game ever made. The improved combat from 2 and the new open level design with the clearance levels are fucking dope. And the audio is some of the best I've heard. RE4 is also one of my favorite games so it's wild that it's being remade only 2 months apart.

Pyo

So excited, LET'S GET IT PEOPLE

RU46N2 (REY)

I feel like they are going to do most of season 2 in flash backs and at the end of the season 2 Joel will die or near the end of the season .

Leo Sanchez

Lol at Dustin berating Colin for his Dead Space Plat playthrough. This is coming from the guy that backed up his save to get the all the Elden Ring endings in one go? That's not the inteded way either, Dustin ;)

Ryan Hayman

regarding Dustin and the PC/PS5 games when they launch - I find it goes both ways. I try to wait like 6-8 hours and try to see which one is in better shape. Cyberpunk, for instance I played on PC on launch day and had no issues. I understand the frustration!

Jonathan Turner

Great episode so far. Had a question I wanted to pose to my fellow LSM brothers and sisters. How much do we think Microsoft really cares about console sales now days? With gamepass being the obvious push by them, they probably see every laptop/desktop/xbox/device that can run gamepass as a potential "console". From their standpoint, its probably not a huge deal if Xboxs' are not flying off the shelves as long as you subscribe to gamepass. Because that, not consoles anymore, is the gateway into their next gen ecosystem.

DB Cooper

He's bitter about being upstaged by a puppet, Pedro's ego won't let him go the way of how Joel actually goes early on in season 2.

Deemac

Regarding how TLOU Pt 2 will be covered in season 2 of the show, I wouldn't be so sure that they'll dramatically change things up just because they did for Bill. One thing Neil said in the official podcast is that they'll follow the events of the game if they can't come up with something better - but if they have a better story to tell (as with Bill), then they'll do that for the show. So I guess it depends on whether or not he wants to change things up, or if he thinks he can write it better given another chance. I do get the point about wanting to use Pedro Pascal, but I still think he'll heavily feature either way. Also I'm almost certain that if it does follow the game, Pt 2 would be split into seasons 2 & 3 of the show - it's way too long to fit into one HBO season. And by that point maybe a 3rd main game is out...

A Sacred Symbols+ with Amy Hennig would be a great podcast!

DualSense Edge is cool. Replaceable analog sticks are a huge game changer, but I don’t play multiplayer games either. Don’t need it.

Cole Antosh

Please get dreads, Colin.

Matic Bric

Coling get dreads and then goes to creator clash 2

The Uncharted series holds a special place in my heart and I am pumped for a new game. However, I think it would be more interesting to see a prequel following Cassandra Morgan, Nathan’s mother, rather than Cassandra Drake for a few reasons. For one, she’s described as a prolific historian and adventurer in her own right but we know little of her exploits. Two, it fleshes out the Uncharted world a bit more and could set the franchise up for an even longer and more meaningful run if you did want to visit CD later on. Lastly, I think it would be more fun to explore the mysteries of the world in a less modern time…modernity is fine but globetrotting in a time like the 60’s or 70’s with all the world events that come with would be fun.

Sam Dunham

"Tout." Rhymes with "out." Does not rhyme with "tote." That is all.

Just got to the Dustin call out. Loved it. Get'em big D.

I had laser surgery in 2017 when I was 30, so around the same age as Chris. The worst part was when they had to keep my eye still to peel back the cornea, and to do that it felt they put a cement cinderblock on my eye; it was only 30 seconds for each eye but it was the worst part of it. I felt like my face was being crushed. The viagra they gave me didn’t do shit. The actual laser part wasn’t bad at all. I couldn’t feel a thing and apparently even if I moved my eye a bit the laser could still track it and keep working. Had to wear an eye mask for a couple days and be led around like a blind person but after that was fine. Six years later and still going strong.

" the viagra they gave me" . Excuse me 😂

Haha. We do eat kangaroo and it’s a great lean meat. Also. I’m terrified of haircuts and foot massages and I’m not even joking. I got hit with the most irritating phobia.

I feel the PS Plus Collection's intent was to counter all the people pointing out "Sure PS5 has Demon's Souls and Miles Morales, OR you can buy a Series X and subscribe to Game Pass", so for people who couldn't afford a game with their PS5 at the time, they had the "quality over quantity" argument (course they also had PS Now, but that never got native PS5 games). And then of course, there's the itsy-bitsy detail that a new PS5 owner SHOULD NOT redeem Resident Evil VII and Uncharted 4, as that would lock them out of a free/cheap PS5 upgrade. Imagine getting that advice: "One of the first things you should do is redeem all the games in the PlayStation Plus Collection, but NOT these 2".

Salazarmageddon

Badgers -- ferocious, tenacious, thick skin, foul stench, dangerous pointy bits, and yet their biggest strength? Hyperbole. Take heart; many of the people who have corrected you are as misinformed about badgers as you had been.

Niall G

Just want to note a missing part for the DC movies connecting to games is that, James Gunn also wants to use the same actor that play their respective characters across all media. In turn putting VAs’ out of work.

Johnny Shoulder

The start of the show at the end of the show? What ever next? Double speed as normal? Glad I kept watching to see Dustin pull a face like he was trying to push a fart out. 😂

Dan P

Dustin, you’re not alone with Dead Space not working on PC. I have a 3080 and tis shit was beyond b r o k e n. I refunded it sadly without even playing 5 minutes of it because there was a game breaking bug at the very start, all this on top of running at 15fps.

Greg Dawson

I agree that difficulty related trophies suck massive monkey balls but disconnecting from PSN to avoid patches to trophies and fixing exploits is grim. Thought Colins trophies were his bonafides, may as well all be "My name is mayo" 😂 Following a collectable guide is fair. Ain't no one got time for these devs hiding stuff in obscure places. Respect to the guide creators.

Greg Dawson

In a way, it seems crazy that we're calling GoW:R successful. 85%+ of Sonys player base haven't bought the game, despite how good it is. I suspect 80%+ will never buy it. Brings in to sharp focus why Sony is so concerned about CoD, clearly they believe that's what the 80% are playing. Also, this news also proves that Sony doesn't need to charge $70.

Bryant

Bored AF with the far cry formula, but if 6 has a husky companion I’m in

Stephen King

That seems like a pretty absurd metric to use to qualify a game as successful. The highest selling PS exclusive of all time is Spider-Man and has sold approximately 20 million units...which is less than 20% of Sony's entire PS4 player base. I don't think anyone can even begin to argue that Spider-Man isn't a resounding success.

Keith Huntington

dustin: "it's well seasoned" colin: "indeed" 😂😂😂 i need a well seasoned jersey for my chair.

drivebyjoe

The connection made was beautiful. 🥹🥹

Hose A Contra Razz

I agree with Dustin that exploiting a game to get a Platinum not intended the way the maker intended is not actually earning it. Also Dustin did the same thing with Elden Ring and using save states to beat the game once instead of 3 times for the trophy, he can't shame you for something he does also.

superbadisfunny .

Never thought I'd do this but been listening to the past few episodes at 1.5 speed. It works well.

Cun

Colin your pronunciation of Petrificus Totalus right at the end there was unreal. Loved it. Hope you're enjoying the game!

Mario Diosdado

Badgers are extremely hard to kill and very aggressive. They kill humans very often, I've seen this first hand multiple times (in Far Cry...-_-)
