Forgetting Bruce Straley | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 239

Think back a ways, to the lead-up to The Last of Us' launch on PlayStation 3. There wasn't one name -- but two! -- oft-invoked in media: Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley. The duo's work was well-established in the Uncharted series, and they would later rescue Uncharted 4 from development tribulations as a team. But the team split apart, and these days, Druckmann is the focal point of PlayStation's internal development efforts while Straley is a ghost of times past. A recent LA Times piece allowed Straley to elaborate on the situation, which led us to a Sacred Symbols-style deep discussion on Naughty Dog, credit, Neil and Bruce's seeming divorce, and what's fair and isn't when it comes to game development. Of course, news also plays a central role in this week's episode, as it always does. Square Enix is finally squashing its questionable Avengers game, BioWare loses arguably its most prolific writer, Spider-Man 2 rumblings have everyone excited, Forspoken launches into a questionable environment, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Have we ever managed to score a game at retail before its street date? What would a modern Nintendo and PlayStation collaboration look like? Would Colin ever interview Adam Sessler on Sacred+? Are people making up tall tales specifically to be included on our show? So funny Americans giving lessons on pronunciation. Dustin said "bottle of water" and failed to pronounce every "t". He literally said "boddle of wader". Colin kept saying "twod" instead of "twat". "@" or "at" isnt pronounced "od" so why would "twat" be pronounced "twod" or whatever the fuck 😂. The writer regarding this issue was 100% correct in describing you as our slower cousins, really an apt description 😂.

Hey fellas - around the 1hr mark, you all were talking about Forspoken and how you, Colin, seem to know fairly quickly if a game is not for you. I get your point, but I do recall that last year, you were not a fan of Deathloop (at least that’s what I recollect) but now you love it. So I hope you give it a try sooner than later because honestly, I trust your guys’ opinions more so than the majority of websites out there. Back to watching!

Umkart

Fair point. It was viewed super favorably by everyone. Very different than forspoken.

The only gaming thing I've gotten early was the Little Mac Amiibo, my local grocery store with a small electronics department put them out 2 weeks early

Ha! I should have but haven’t yet. Paused to listen to the sacred plus episode with the dukes. But you guys also touched on it there. Makes sense!

I've always thought of Harry Potter houses in terms of NC colleges. UNC is Griffendor. Slytherin is Duke. Ravenclaw is NC State. And Hufflepuff is Wake Forest.

To the fellow person in Japan. Sign up for the Amazon lottery. The individual shop lotteries are a crap shoot. Just sign up on Amazon and wait.

Thanks! I just looked into this before buying third party. Like Colin said I have time before FF16 but I also want to play the new Kiseki games too

3 Words. Weekend at Colin's

superbadisfunny .

At what point are we going to learn what tlou factions really is? Its been years and nothing but teases about not much at this point. I hope it really is an ambitious multiplayer title that pushes the envelope with story telling but I'm getting less and less hype for it yet it comes up every few months. Bungie, one of the best story tellers, messed up with destiny 1 in the beginning so I hope we don't have a repeat.

I was curious why Bruce's name wasn't on it as well. I agree with Chris, at the least, Bruce should be credited on the same title card of the show as Neil as a "creator" of the video game. Residuals would be a harder thing to crack since it's a different format and the contracts Bruce and Neil signed probably didn't cover multimedia covering other formats or anything. Neil is only making money on the show because he's actually working on it. Naughty Dog could have asked for him to receive credit as well, so some of it lays on them/Sony. Ultimately, he should be credit at the least. Just my two cents

Just a correction: Morgan Webb was Sessler's co-host.

Surge!

There's my 15 seconds of fame, my work here is done ha ha. Good show guys, thanks for reading my comment.

Regarding the TLOU: Factions discussion: while I think maybe the use of the singular "friend" was a typo, or a mistake, it is also a possibility that it was intentional. I could see it still being PVPVE, but maybe your squad can be two people at most? Maybe in an open world? I could see this potentially being more intimate and intense of an experience? I'm unsure, just wanted to provide an alternate thought.
