The Last of Us (HBO) Review Discussion and Spoilercast (S1, E1) | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 260

Welcome to the first of what will likely be many episodes of Sacred Symbols+ dedicated to HBO's brand-new, PlayStation-inspired series The Last of Us. Starring Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, the cable series based on Naughty Dog's classic kicks off with a bang, running for nearly an hour and a half and covering the first couple of hours of the 2013 PS3 game. The pilot straddles an interesting line: It's true to the original story, yet its own, completely unique thing, too. It has something to offer newcomers and series fans alike, and it's damn good, too. So let's chat about it, get a season-long dialogue started strong, and follow the light.

Electrocute is like literally/figuratively, in that dictionaries have started accounting for modern usage but the whole electrocution conversation is driving me up the wall 😂 You guys were shocked; electrocution is a portmanteau of "electric & execute" to be electricuted means to be shocked to death. To be honest I accept that the English language changes, but I was more so surprised that Colin didn't say anything. He's usually all over this stuff. You guys have made me excited for this show FYI!

The moment Dustin mixed up FEDRA with HYDRA took me so off guard, I couldn't stop laughing when I realized what happened 😂 Unintentional comedy gold.

Colin is spoiling way too much about events that haven’t happened yet. Many of us have played the game (myself included) but not everyone. To be a proper companion to the show, it should remain focused on the show.

BisonD

I would have to agree. He spoiled two future deaths within the span of 5 minutes. One is likely happening in the season finale.

Do you think the Abby flashback sequence in TLOU 2 is going to be part of season one? Just to introduce Abby in a way that couldn’t be done in the first game.

Steve Bitto

Could you imagine how pretentious it would sound if you replaced game with book and applied it to every movie or tv show based on one?

Connor Galbraith

They absolutely crushed the pilot. I’m really glad y’all liked it too. I’m so excited for all the people that are gonna experience this story for the first time. Every Sunday is gonna feel like Christmas for the next 8 weeks.

Alex The Mute

I haven't played any of the games. Will these episodes spoil the games?

Agree with most of what was said, but for me Joel and Ellie’s persona and behaviors are very much changed from the game. Joel in the game is a hardened person that seems to have lost his faith in humanity for what they did to his daughter and what he had to do to survive, whereas on the show I felt he’s definitely more caring, not as blunt and feels more like a good guy. Ellie on the other hand, as the guys said is the opposite, she doesn’t have the kindness inspite her own traumas and tough experiences, she’s too sarcastic all the time and not at all likeable for me, even on the lighter touches when joking around. Liking this changes or not is totally subjective, but having beaten the game several times, it’s not a change I can get onboard with, it just doesn’t seem like the same characters I love and thought that might be by design, it unfortunately ruins it for me.

Great first episode. And granny was creepy as fuuuuuu….

3rd time I have been a blubbering mess over the start of this story 💀

The scene where Sarah is picking a movie and you just see the old woman start to twitch and convulse is still giving me chills

I am spoiler free on where S1 will end, but I see a lot of speculation that Season 2 will tell the events of TLOU Part 2. Even if the show takes its time to tell that storyline out to thru the end of a Season 3, I am curious if we are going to have a Game Of Thrones situation where TLOU Part 3 source material has not released yet but Neil D will need to provide a high-level overview for HBO writers and execs to sketch out the show's future seasons. I have trouble believing the show can go on an extended hiatus until Part 3's game release (2025-2026??) and most fans would not want to see the storyline continue via the show versus playing the next chapter of the saga via the game. I would be surprised if HBO didn't take better precautions not to have a repeat of the Game Of Thrones final seasons debacle, but what does everyone else think? Could the following year from when the show catches up to the game predict when TLOU Part 3 might be timed?

If they're splitting Pt 2 into 2 seasons, we wouldn't be seeing S3 until 2025-26 at the earliest. I don't think they're going to catch up, and I don't think Neil and that team will take as long as GRRM

Ryan Hayman

I think they could easily stretch out TLOU2 into two seasons, as it is easily 10 hours longer than the first game. I am really hoping Game of Thrones syndrome doesn't happen here... and I am also hoping that the game comes out before they spoil the story, unless they begin to deviate.

The reason for the spore not being in the show is cuz they did not want to have the actors were gas mask all the time everyone would be in gas mask.

I loved the first episode and infact I thought the opening was a lot better than the games. It's funny that when I first beat TLOU I thought to myself "I would have rather watched that as a TV show" and I was right. I hope they do something with that story about the people who land on the beach.
