There's little doubt that this year's Video Game Awards was the strongest industry showcase in a long time, potentially in several years. Geoff Keighley did a great job, and he deserves credit as a great ambassador for our medium. But even more important than the VGAs, the winners, and the pomp and circumstance were the game reveals. PlayStation players are going to be eating very, very well in the years to come, particularly when you consider how full the schedule is without much of an inkling of what's coming from first and second party outside of Insomniac's Marvel duo. So let's dive extensively into Ken Levine's new BioShock-like banger Judas, Hideo Kojima's haunting and wonder-invoking Death Stranding 2, Guerrilla's beautiful LA-based Horizon: Forbidden West DLC called Burning Shores, a promising new action-RPG from Don't Nod titled Banishers: Ghost of New Eden, the return of From Software's dormant mech battler with Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, 505's surprisingly fun-looking romp Crime Boss: Rockay City, Supergiant Games' first sequel ever in Hades II, and so much more. Other news this week includes the industry's unending obsession with Days Gone discourse, the FTC's decision to sue Microsoft over the Activision acquisition, and more. Is this the longest episode of Sacred Symbols ever? Yes... it sure is.

The only thing Sony has that i care about as a PC only player is final fantasy. Tired of wating 2 years to get the port. Otherwise none of their games are good enough to warrant the massive price tag of the PS5.

It is a shame Dustin is tapping out of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It is the best game in the franchise, and really does stand alongside Ragnarok and Elden Ring as the big 3 game of the year contenders. That said, I do get why he left when he did. The first 5-10 hours are slower. It is very comparable to Horizon Zero Dawn's opening that had a very tutorial section (kid section) followed by a semi tutorial section (before leaving the Nora). It's meant to give you a strong foundation for the open world ahead. However, this isn't a game section easy to play while splitting attention between several other games. For those like Dustin, my biggest tip is to just hard-core golden path/main line the story until you reach the desert area. That's where the game's open worldness takes hold. Especially after finishing the main story beat in that section.

I always thought Days Gone didn't sell enough, because people were kind of done with zombies around that time. And even within the zombie genre it did not have enough to stand out (at least at first glance). So unless your game was a new Resident Evil or Last of Us, it was always going to be uphill battle.

Circling back to say I’ve never heard a better, more well-thought-out argument against the ABK merger than Colin’s dialogue on this episode. He put to words a feeling that’s been growing for me. Loved hearing Chris and Dustin’s perspective too. Best episode yet ✌️

Hey Colin, fyi the fighting game community is very excited about street fighter 6. I think you have to consider its about a 30 year old series and at some point you might wanna try something new to keep the audience captivated. The core elements of the game so far is still there. There's been multiple betas of the game so far and the hype actually keeps going up for the game. I'm just your friendly neighborhood fighting game community member.

I agree but I actually agree with Colin and have had this 'thing' in the back of my mind that I just don't like about 6 (and 5 even)...and yea I think it's actually the Tekken/3D esque character design. It's SF so it's going to be solid gameplay wise, but the design I'm just not a fan of. Then again I am an old dusty 42 year old that yearns for the days of some Zero/Alpha 3 or SF3 visuals haha.

2023 is shaping up to be AMAZING for us PC masterrace nerds. I can't wait(!) to play the Cyberpunk expansion as that game was without question my game of the year and I am playing it through again this year. Finally getting The Last of Us on PC is going to make me cry even though I've been through it many times haha. Finally, Dead Cells with Castlevania?!?!? When I opened Steam and saw that announcement trailer I couldn't contain my hype. I didn't start playing Dead Cells until this year but it's EASILY my favorite game I've played this year. I've got many many hours in on the Steamdeck, the Xbox Series X, and especially on my PC. It's a game I can't stop playing...and that music, fuck...I love that game so much. 😁👍

Totally understand cause I miss the old resident evil games 1-3 the most compared to the 3rd person/first person ones now lol the camera angles made the older ones more scary than the newer games.

Lou & Rei Loper

Fair enough, hopefully we can have both. My fingers will stay figuratively crossed. 🤞

We didn’t get to hear what jrpg it was Colin was referring to, the new one he was wanting to get to over the holidays…

Colin, your take on street fighter 6 is spot on. The IP’s art style hasn’t been good since Capcom v SNK—with its apex being with the Alpha & III series. It’s too bad Capcom doesn’t pull a page from Arcsystem Works art syle.

"And the game of the year goes to... Elden Ring!" A thunderous applause echoes throughout the hall as Hidetaka Miyazaki and his entourage leave their seats to accept the coveted award. A man emerges from the shadows and stealthily joins the entourage to the stage. A proud and teary eyed Miyazaki addresses the audience, he doesn't know that nobody can understand him as there no subtitles. The strange man is behind Miyazaki, still and inconspicouous. He looks familiar, the smooth head, unkept beard and piercing blue eyes. Miyazaki is winding down his speech, he's ready to leave when the man moves towards Miyazaki and forces the mic from his hands. It's Colin Moriarty! He holds up his copy of Forbidden West, the true GOTY, looks Miyazaki in the eyes and says "97".

Col, it’s weird that you like Slay the Spire (thanks for finally getting me into that btw), and Returnal but not Hades. Hades to me is like that same kind of rogue-like but action-based. I for one am PUMPED they’re doing Hades II. Of course you gotta follow up 1 of the best games of all-time. I bought it on all 4 systems. 😅

Ign Day's Gone preview: 'While I’ll admit that I initially rolled my eyes at yet another Gruff White Male Protagonist™ in a grim world – especially one with such a Gruff White Male Protagonist™-ey name as Deacon St. John – I ended up getting far more invested than I’d initially expected.' Jason Shrier @ Kotaku: 'So that’s the thing, I’m intrigued to see where the story’s going. And the performances are really good. I like the main character a lot, even though he’s this typical gruff triple-A white dude biker.' Yeah, that game came out at a time when game journalists could slam the game for literally anything to gain recognition among their woke friends and industry, or turn a review into a political manifesto (like Variety's Division 2 review) completely unprovoked. Today they'll just ask FF XVI's director about racial diversity, and that's it, it used to be a whole thing, back when game journalists had more of a voice, and held more power. John Garvin remembers things right.

Just wanted to chime in that your non-video game chat, and the part when you discuss what you’re playing are my favorite parts of the show. Would be happy if those sections were even longer! I do miss the section when you discuss all the newly dropped games though.

PlayStation will do so much better on PC when they release day and date. PC players don't see sony as the top dogs and they're certainly not jumping up and down to buy old titles. Obviously they will sell, but nearly as well as a day and date release.
