Are Xbox & Bethesda Mishandling Fallout? | Defining Duke Episode 94

Fallout is arguably the most lucrative IP that Xbox earned from its acquisition of Zenimax Media. Since the ink on that deal dried, the possibilities for that series seem endless. With brilliant Fallout minds underneath the Xbox umbrella such as Todd Howard, Brian Fargo, Feargus Urquhart, Tim Cain, and Leonard Boyarsky, it feels like we're primed for a special era in the franchise's lifecycle. While it sounds great, it looks like we're a ways out from any meaningful collaboration. A recent interview with Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has resparked the famous "Fallout: New Vegas 2" conversation as there is a true hunger from within Obsidian to work on this franchise again. This dates back to 2013 with public pitches for a game by Obsidian, but now with so many answers available in-house; it feels inexcusable to not have something cooking for an objectively profitable series. We also get into the thick of things again with the CMA as well as Microsoft facing some layoffs. There are new details on Minecraft Legends that are beginning to shape up Xbox's early 2023 picture. Plus, we dive into the fiercely debated 30 FPS topic as well as the importance of the conversations surrounding pay for voicework in gaming. Get some Defining Duke merch! Xbox mismanaging properties, their's a shock.

Just drop Fallout altogether and give us more Starfield and Elder Scrolls. Easy. (joking here ofc)

The way that people promote egregious wages, simply because THEY are forced to work for egregious wages, baffles me. I can understand Matty's take, "well, you should have been a Youtuber like me". But hearing it from ppl that work 60 hrs just to be poor is mind blowing.

NotSkyWalker

Really great conversation and insight into the voice acting in games / the Bayonetta situation. As unlikely of a setting for it as a dedicated Xbox podcast might be, I dug that segment.

Your mileage may vary, but I played persona 5 Royal and then persona 4 golden back to back. While 4 was a step down gameplay wise, it was still awesome

The title should of been “Microsoft and Bethesda are having a fallout”. Puns are so hot right meow. Great episode though dudes

Cash

Persona 3 has the best story, 4 the best characters, and 5 the best gameplay.

Ben is always a cool surprise! :D

I haven’t watched yet so maybe you guys made this comment but, if you remove MSFT from the equation we still don’t get FO5 until 2032(estimated). Is that mismanagement for simply resources? Is it Todd and Co being control freaks? You have said it in other vids and I’m sure you say it again here, with Xbox has to tell Bethesda give it up or Xbox gives Bethesda a lot of cash to spin up a FO specific division. Just some quick random thoughts out of my backside 🤣

Zach Cooper

They need another studio to deal with and work on the Fallout Franchise.

Thanks for answering my question! Great show!
