Revelations | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 224

As we enter the season of spookiness, we're left wondering about the scariest possibility: Continuing PlayStation 5 scarcity. But there's good news emerging, at least if recent reports are to be believed. It appears Sony is readying to gear-up PS5 production in ways so dramatic that they plan on selling more units in one year than consoles like GameCube and the original Xbox did in their entire respective lifetimes, with millions to spare. Soon, the question may not be if you can get a PS5, but if you really want one. (You do.) Plus: New discoveries about first party team Haven suggest Sony wants them more for making making games easier than making a game (follow all that?), Persona 3 and 4 quietly receive a release date on PS4 (speaking of Revelations), new PS+ offerings leave much to be desired (some old games would be nice), and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What are some obscure digital-only PS3 titles worth playing? How come games rarely launched in the summer back in the day? Do we have a hard time playing with an evil karmic slant in choice-based campaigns? Has a recent YouTube suggestion from Dustin ruined actual lives? Would pay good money to have a SlitherHead edition of the PS5. Just a thought

Hi Colin, I can see a couple of people already pointed this out. 2.9 billion USD revenue for gamepass is for 2021, which started with 18 million subscribers and ended with 25. Also, the number is for consoles only and we don't know the division between PC and Console. I would assume there are millions of PC gamepass users. So your math doesn't work for these two reasons.

Yes.. I'd like to file a complaint... Why is it I am hooked on chris chan documentary?!? .... thanks a lot ...

Re: the PS Plus conversation. I chose to tack Extra on to the remaining months of my existing plan. Cost me $14. I then ripped through both Stray and Returnal, which was a combined value of maybe $140? So I'm deeeefinitely pleased, but that was a coordinated plan. Chances are I'll leave Extra enabled for another year or two and end up in the red. That Premium tier though, man... I'm glad I didn't sign up. Really odd. Makes you wonder if maybe they'd planned to release more by now, but encountered last minute issues with porting that they weren't anticipating.

Your comments towards the end made me want to write in about choice & consequence in games. There is a somewhat unquantifiable aspect to the equation, and that is the impact of simply *knowing* that a different choice exists, and that it will result in a meaningfully different outcome. Even if you never take that choice—or try it only once—it increases the perceived weight of every choice that follows. You know implicitly that you *are* making a choice, not a false one. Naturally, of course, it all feels just that much better when choices are morally grey and nuanced. But even a moral binary can make either side of it feel more impactful. Forgoing the evil path to continue down the compassionate path makes the compassionate path feel that much better. It's up to the devs of course whether they feel that the calculus in this situation produces results that can justify the additional time necessary create content very few people will see. However—as a dev myself—I almost always find that a game is better when time goes into those details that many will miss. It elevates the experience of the few players who see those things, and it elevates the experience of everyone else simply by their knowing that they could experience those things if they'd played differently.

Hey Colin. You pick up on some grammatical errors (eg less than, fewer than) and yet you and Chris (probably D too) say "I could care less" or "I could give less of a shit", on a regular basis. That makes no sense. The phrase is "I *couldn't* care less". What you're saying is that you do care a great deal, but I know that's not what you mean. Similar to less than/fewer than, you know what they mean but it's wrong. Sort it out Moriarty 😜

Witcher 3 has an awesome decision/consequence system. You have to really pay attention to whats being said and even then, you occasionally get the two bad choices. Hope you get round to it Colin when the ps5 patch is out. PS. Weird that RDR2 doesn't have a ps5 patch isn't it?

Cun

Thank you to Luke Aldersley for that excellent question. The conversation on nostalgia that came out of it put me in a super warm place. For some reason Chris's deep cut to Pokemon Silver of all things hit home. I typically reminisce on Blue, since it was the beginning, but Silver being the next chapter once we knew what to expect was undeniably one of the most exciting things of my entire childhood. And I'd never once thought back on it!

How's your son doing? "Oh you know the usual, he's stapling butterflies to cardboard" 😂😂😂😂😂

LastStandMedia

If you can coordinate like that, you can definitely make it worth your while. I honestly just don't care, personally. I don't spend that much money on games, and I can afford anything I want.

Cun

Fair enough! I can respect the resistance to subscription models.

Nice. 17 PS3 games that Colin recommended, and I already had 16 of them. Missing Soldner X-2. Also have Braid, Geometry Wars 3 on Vita, and Limbo. I actually take all my old computers and slurp their drives into my server, then years later sometimes I go through and extract anything good out of them and purge the junk...
