Obsidian Entertainment is often referred to as "Xbox's #1 draft pick" by the Dukes. While Starfield and Redfall have left 2022 more vacant than Xbox would have liked, Obsidian is showing a bit of Insomniac Games energy with two releases this fall. Those two being Grounded and Pentiment! While not entirely sexy games, these experiments carve out the future of what Xbox as a console can look like. One which allows creative freedom to a team primarily known for RPGs whereas both their games releasing in 2022 are not such. Grounded is the first to release and it's excellent. After two years of being in game preview, its 1.0 release is here capturing Matty, Cog, and many Xbox fans. With Obsidian's consistency in releases and quality, we have to ask the tough question. Is Obsidian Entertainment saving Xbox's 2022? With Game Pass existing, does it even need saving? The Duke dive headfirst into the backyard to find out. Otherwise, E3 is back, Overwatch 2 is at the center of more controversy, and many Game Pass partners are pleased with the service thus far.

Is Obsidian saving Xbox in 2022? The answer is yes. I am loving Grounded and my two casual af, FIFA/Call of Duty every year bum ass friends are loving it and want to keep playing it. It’s a W for sure.

The measures taken in overwatch are good in a free to play game to limit smurfing. Phone number, 50 quick play wins, and gradual unlock of modes and characters is good so pros don’t create new accounts and slaughter new players. Unpopular opinion but is the right call imo

I can see it now. Xbox buys Platinum Games, PG continues to put out garbage every other game, and the narrative that Xbox Studios is mismanaged never dies.

I don't mind some of the changes they are making to Overwatch, especially in regards to the 50 quickplay wins. If all this limits smurfing to some degree, nice! It feels like some of the OW2 hate is getting out of hand (not that it's coming from the Dukes tho). On Twitter I still see some clout chasers talking about how horrible Blizzard is as a company and they're all terrible people. Like at this point, you're just hurting the devs that were victims in the first place man!

Garry

Hi folks Microsoft are just trying to change the narrative which they brilliant at, but it’s not about size the regulators would look at its verticals huge games on game pass and owning publishers and they need to decide if that’s a monopoly. Regulators won’t care how many developers you own to an extent.

I recall an Xbox Live subscription being required to play online back in the day being part of the issue with bringing over Final Fantasy 14 which requires a separate subscription. People weren’t able to just subscribe to final fantasy to play on Xbox. They would also need to pay for Xbox live. When Final Fantasy 11 finally launched on 360 I believe it was on its own servers, separate from PlayStation and PC.

I'm confused at the OW conversation here. Is Overwatch 2 so different that they should have left OW1 available or is there not enough new that the 2 isn't justified?? If either of you are still confused about it, watch Gamespots video on it they put out today https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPEDqr0LLVc

easelgames

that doesn't really apply for FFXIV like it did 11, because of the switch for PS+ being required for online play as early as late ps3. (only exception are F2P titles)

Cristian R

I think the exception still stands for games with their own subscription fees on PS. I recall playing ff14 in the past without a ps plus subscription on PS4.

Kenneth Oms

Ff11 was not on its own servers. I played 11 on 360 and played with PlayStation players and pc players. My entire guild was pc players.

Kenneth Oms

Great episode boys. Not sure about Xbox hesitance about FF14. FF11 was cross play with pc and PlayStation players during the Xbox 360 era.

It was mentioned at the top of the show, but thank you for the lack of bloat to begin the episodes as of late. I really love that the banter that happens in the show really surrounds the topics at hand (i.e. Like a dragon, danganronpa etc). Really been enjoying how tight the episodes have felt.
