Life is full of choices. And a fundamental choice is what you do for a living and who you work for. So it was disappointing to see Shawn Layden -- a champion of PlayStation's first party games for a run of very good years -- choosing to sign with Tencent as a Special Advisor. As an ex-Fortune 500 executive, Layden is already set for life, and with a reputation and track record like his, he can work anywhere and do anything. He's chosen to be used to help normalize and strengthen Tencent's western operation, and in our humble opinion, he has some explaining to do. Plus: We further assess the catastrophic Grand Theft Auto VI leak (as well as Rockstar's response to it), EA's new Iron Man game (and its potential to be the next Spider-Man), rumors circulating about a new PS5 model (with a detachable disc drive), and much more. Then: Listener inquiries. What's the economic strategy behind Square Enix's coming avalanche of releases? Is there a firm line in game emulation that simply shouldn't be crossed? In an industry so mired in negative news, what's a glaring positive we've identified? Where the hell has Chris gone off to?

Colin not so secretly hinting Tim the Toolman taylor is gonna be in Kingdom Hearts 4

Really solid episode, as always. The rumor of the next iteration of PS5 or PS6 being diskless is interesting. I did see that Sony Direct is having a massive sale on almost all their games and it almost looks like they’re just trying to purge all their old physical media inventory. It’s honestly the best move to go to digital long term.

I relate with Patrick Burkhard question. I drive a pickup and delivery truck (secondary education teacher in a previous life) and the constant complaining and moaning from friends that have to go back into the office is nauseating. I do understand that many jobs can be done remotely while mine can not. As someone that missed zero days during the pandemic and worked more hours it's so tiring to hear people complain about working from home during the pandemic then have to go back into the office and still complain. We are so soft as humans.

I’m late, but I have a follow-up question for Dustin regarding physical games and an external disc drive; Similar to you, I prefer physical games, partially because I like to see them on my shelf, but also because I like to line them out to friends. Right now, I feel like I’ll do whatever it takes to continue buying and playing physical games, but you brought up an interesting point in this episode. If the only option for PS6 is an external drive that doesn’t fit well with the console (it’s an eye sore), I think this could potentially be a deal breaker for me. I love physical games, but it’s much more important to me that my space looks neat and organized. I see my shelving and display every day, whereas buying digital games with bother me at first, but eventually I’d forget about it. Would you continue to buy physical games?

Can't wait for Lockmort to take Colin's "Goofy" impression out of context.

About 10hrs into diofield and it's actually pretty good. Can't wait for valkyrie elysium too. Also Colin you might buy all digital but I have not bought a ps5 game digitally if available physically. 2 different extremes imo. I think most players still purchase some physical games.

If you have multiple generations of media that are fully backward compatible, the tech is not evolving enough. I don’t begrudge anyone their happiness with keeping their old software but I’m perfectly happy with Sony’s current model.

I’m not at all surprised by what Dan Allen Gaming did. I was subscribed to his channel because he did cool interviews with actors from video games but when Resident Evil: Village came out, I was bombarded with videos from his channel of every important moment in the game. I commented later on after I finished the game how annoying that was to try to not get spoiled. I think he was in such a hurry to get views first that he didn’t care and I can’t stand those kinds of YouTubers. I hope the industry drops him and quickly forgets his existence.

This is just a terrible take. I happen to work from home and my job is not "kushy" as Patrick put it. It's not easy and it is highly skilled. To say "stop complaining or find another job" is ignorant and those who work from home could just as easily say that about people with jobs that can't be done from home.

Talking about hearing your name on podcasts…Colin, you were on Joe Rogan twice! For me that was very exciting to see and glad you are continuing to provide in my opinion the best podcast listening experience.

Everyone situation is different and I know it is not as simple as just find a better position. Believe me I am trying. My frustrations come into play with people I know personally that stream on twitch, play golf, go out to eat at 3pm etc during normal work hours then complain about how their company doesn't believe they are working and wants them to come back to the office. It's not a competition who has it rougher. I would like an easier position as well. I just know many people in my blue collar field that had to work longer hours during the craziness of the last couple years find people that work 40 hours or less from home complaining rather irritating. I am not referring to you as I do not know you. I have many friends that work from home that have fantastic work ethics and I am sure you are one of them as well. I can understand why it would bother you as someone that works from home and doesn't slack off when people say negative things about work from home. You are not abusing it. Sadly I know a lot of people that do abuse the situation.

Another host for ign did a similar move to Dornbush. Jose Otero hosted nyc for a long time and then went to work for nintendo.

Physical media dinosaur here. I will continue to buy physical games for as long as the option continues to be available. I am not blind to the trend towards digital, quite the opposite as I have watched many of my favorite media retailers go out of business, or significantly reduce the amount of physical media they stock on shelves over the past decade. However i have found online retailers over the past few years that have sprung up to take their place and provide physical options like Limited run, Strictly limited, Special reserve, Super rare, etc. Sure they are usually small print runs, but that suits me just fine as the physical media collector space becomes more niche. Should they move to an external disc drive on the next round of consoles, i will gladly pick up that option, as i have an external disc drive for my PC, because i still regularly purchase CDs, DVDs, and Blurays.

Physical media, drop their price much faster than digital, here in brazil, we can pay for the physical media using credit card and dividing the sale value for several months, since new games prices are prohibitive for most people, this is a easier way to purchase games on their release.
