The Last of Us: Part I Review Discussion and Spoilercast | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 225

Oh dear: It's time to talk about Naughty Dog again. But fear not! We're not haters. Rather, today's episode of + is a two-hour ride through The Last of Us: Part I -- recently released on PlayStation 5 and coming soon to PC -- featuring me (Colin) and Last Stand's Coordinator and Shopkeep (and my fiancé), Micah. We get deep into the story, the characters, the gameplay, the differences between the PS3, PS4, and PS5 versions, and even discuss Naughty Dog's current reputation, and why it's so darn popular to hate on one of gaming's greatest studios ever, and what undoubtedly remains, even nine years later, one of the very best games of all-time. Indeed, maybe the best way to get people to stop talking about Naughty Dog is to actually release something convincingly better than what they make, and well, we're largely still waiting. A warning: We spoil the game utterly and completely, as well as Left Behind. We don't spoil Part II whatsoever, as Micah's never even played it. Enjoy.

Excited to give this one a listen, one of the best games to come out for PS5 so far, easily

Ayyyyyeeee

Mike Collins

Looking forward to this although not replaying the game. I checked out the video just to see what the recording situation was. :)

I share Micah’s passion for the weapons in TLOU. It’s so true. Even when you’re cornered and have the pressure on you, you can almost feel the power of the weapon in Joel’s hands before you pull the trigger at all. You understand that when you fire that shotgun, limbs will be liberated from their owners. God bless these glorious guns. I also agree on the flamethrower feeling out of place. One of my favorite things about this game (and the sequel) is that you can leave it where you find it. You can also not upgrade your holsters in both games for added challenge/backpack searching tension.

MJ SKA BOI

I used to never upgrade my weapons at all, but they put so much effort into into the beautiful workbench animations that it’d be downright disrespectful not to enjoy the upgrades.

Erik Roth

I enjoyed the game so much, I played through the whole story in one sitting. Can't wait to watch this video.

LifeWellWasted

I would love to see Micahs collection. I enjoy seeing collections all shapes and size.

Gene Park

Hope Micah can play part 2 would loooove to hear her thoughts. And totally agree with Colin. Last of us is a seminal work

Gene Park

Whoa I thought I was the only one who doesn’t upgrade the holsters.

MJ SKA BOI

Lol four holsters is a lot! And the fact that it’s optional even in Part II where it’s a pickup rather than an upgrade is a really great freedom. The bow, the flamethrower, the hunting rifle and the revolver are all optional pickups for Joel, but the flamethrower is the only one I tend to ignore.

That moment at the beginning where Tommy and Joel argue about stopping and helping the people and Joel convinces Tommy to drive past, I don't interpret that as some kind of butterfly effect moment. That was just to show the difference between Tommy and Joel; how Tommy will be more concerned with helping humanity and Joel is more selfish, only concerned with himself and those he loves. And it is a really cool detail how Joel keeps his broken watch from Sarah. It's also cool how Joel looks at his watch at certain moments in the story as his relationship with Ellie deepens, as Ellie reminds Joel of her. And I am much more Joel than Tommy. At the end I am with Joel 1,000%; I'll kill all those bastards and save Ellie happily. As for doing more to make Part 1 like Part 2, I don't think most of that would be possible. Giving a dodge button or ability to prone would just change everything too much. And Joel doesn't need to dodge, he's a big guy who can just brute force melee enemies. Not like Ellie in Part 2 where combat has to be more of a dance. One thing that is still off to me that I thought could have been made like Part 2 is that you don't kill any human females. In this world, women would have to be as tough as the men to survive and you fight plenty of them in Part 2. I guess it would be off-putting to people to see Joel beat a woman to death with a pipe, whereas playing as Ellie in Part 2 it's woman-on-woman, but I find it noticeably off.

Great job Micah! Appreciate seeing you on more of the podcasts! :-)

Colin and Micah, I really enjoyed this conversation! It made me even more excited to play the remake. Colin, I have to agree with your initial theory about the vaccination. Although Neil asserts that a vaccination would have been 100% possible, this just isn't the case. The cordyceps virus is a fungal virus, and to date, there are no vaccinations for fungal viruses. I find it hard to believe that with the collapse of society, medical research and discovery would have continued at a similar pace to result in a vaccination in 2033. Resultantly, I feel no guilt about going on a rampage as Joel at the end of this game because killing and dissecting Ellie would have been in vain. With how researched Naughty Dog games are, it's surprising that Neil wouldn't have known this. Anyway, as always, thanks for the great conversation! reference: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41541-021-00294-8#:~:text=Abstract,to%20protect%20at%20risk%20individuals.

Great conversation! Colin in your Last of Us 2 spoilercast you said that you preferred the first game because the story was tighter, more impactful and had better character relationships which I agreed with. Over time has your opinion changed or do you still prefer the first game?

Pyo

2 hours talking about last of us? LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOO

GJ

love the dragonball stuff micah has on her shelf

Quinn

3D audio is a game changer for me. It made the prior playing of the game feel like a vague dream that I was now living in reality with this Part 1 play through. Also gotta shout out how fantastic the audio was for Ghost of Tsushima. As a fellow gamer/multitasker, it feels flat out disrespectful to not give my full attention to some of these where the audio is that fantastic.

Heather Edwards

Really loved the conversation. Like many others, I’ve played through this game multiple times. I love that you two made me think about things from a perspective I hadn’t considered before. Thanks for covering the game!!!

Pyo

after watching/listening to this whole video. You guys sold me on a last of us prequel. Maybe doing that and part 3 is what's left for the story

Shawn

I believe he said in this spoilercast that he thinks the 2nd game is better now. But If I’m wrong Colin please correct me.

Dylan Michael

Hope I’m not alone in saying this but now I really want another Sacred Symbols + where Micah discusses her thoughts on Part 2 with Colin. So many things I wanna ask about right now lol

Jacob Hey

Don’t have a PS5 but replayed PS4 version and can confirm that with the few exceptions of Part II, Uncharted 4, and Red Dead Redemption II, nothing has touched this game from an immersion stand point. And only 1 game mentioned above is from a different studio! I know video games are all different and are not aiming for the same thing, but it’s just insane how far ahead Naughty Dog is in regards to merging gameplay and presentation.

Michael Hedrick

Love when you have Micah on. Great insight. You both really made me want to jump into the part 1 remake and make it my first PS5 game that's not just a patch of a PS4 game I already owned lol

Michael Thew

If it was up to either my kid or a Dr. trying to kill my kid, I’d kill a 100 doctors to protect my kid. That’s the one major disconnect I feel that you have, you are Elli’s protector and in my mind it doesn’t matter who these people were that you killed, David, his town, it’s completely justified in killing every single one of those people to keep your kid safe. For better or worse I never felt like the bad guy, which is why part 2 sucked. Abby is the bad guy and they tried to push her agenda down your throat. I hope you two have kids together. I think it’ll give you a new view on TLoU 2 and Joel in general

LastStandMedia

I'm merely talking to the literal timing of everything. None of what happened would have happened if they had just stopped. Joel immediately showed the cutthroat nature that was necessary to survive in the environment that was about to unfold, and we immediately saw Tommy's unwillingness, which they later speak to.

LastStandMedia

Yeah. On one hand, I can't really argue with the intent of the creator. On the other hand, it just seems totally improbable, if not impossible. This makes what happens to Ellie much more understandable.

LastStandMedia

I don't remember ever saying the first game is superior to the second, but I certainly feel that way now. TLoU2 is masterwork.

LastStandMedia

That's what makes the games so good, though, especially the second one. Joel did the understandable thing. Abby's fury is also totally understandable. And neither are right or wrong.

Dylan Michael

You two actually got me to go back to my Part 2 save to finish it up a second time !

Michael Thew

Great take and I do see both sides, but I firmly fall on Joel’s side because of my kids and it becomes your life

Blake Wall

I know why people are upset that games cost $70 but I think people forget the Yoshi's Island was $70 in the 90's so it shouldn't be that surprising and it could be worse. Also I should mention that some games were even more expensive like I think Phantasy Star 4 was up there

superbadisfunny .

As someone who has zero interest in Tlou series cause I found the story mediocre but gameplay fun, I really enjoyed this 2 hour discussion thanks to you Colin. I been following you for ig a decade now and although I disagree with this game, I'm always ready to hear your opinions on games and this did not disappoint as usual. You are the best at what you do !
